1 Academic Strategic and Assessment Plan (ASAP) Department: Education & Psychology Academic Year: 2008/2009 TWC Strategic Plan 2000/Curriculum Goals 1. Ensure quality by creating an organizational structure which enhances academic programs. 2. Develop programs which are consistent with our stated purpose and which are consistent with the resources of the institution. 3. Ensure quality in existing programs by introducing concepts of internationalization in the curriculum. Mission of the Department: To develop individuals who are competent, professional, service-oriented individuals, and reflective practitioners. We are going to expand the use of Sakai and our matrices and qualifications information will be placed in Sakai for our B.O.E. visit in spring of Department Goal 4: Work on Foreign Language endorsement to align certification curriculum with Tennessee Diploma Project. s 1. Will work with Lynne Gylanni on programmatic additions for a foreign language certification. McMinn County needs assessment concerning teachers with a foreign language degree. The foreign language degree has been approved by the V.P. of Academic Affairs. The proposal will be written this year and sent to the TN State Dept. of Education. Department Goal 5: Continue to gather data on recent graduates as to their certification area, percentage hired, and percentage that pursue graduate school. s 1. To pursue data of recent graduates from the State Department of Education. Current electronic data-base and state data-base will be continually assessed for departmental improvement. Our Survey of Recent Graduates reveals that we are stable at a 93% hiring-rate for McMinn and 90% for Athens City Schools. We are still reviewing documents from other schools We will pursue a Master s offering in Curriculum and Instruction. Our department wishes to pursue a certification in Special Education. Department Goal 7: To use the Academic Success Center to increase retention of incoming freshmen at TWC. s 1. The Teacher Learning Lab has been redesigned for the Academic Success Center 2. The creation of a Teacher s Academy will enhance the role the Academic Success Center plays on the TWC campus. Increase in retention of freshmen. Correlation study concerning absenteeism and grades. Education Student Surveys Analysis of the sign-in sheets reveal that only 22% of the freshmen came to the center. The correlation study exposed a direct correlation between absenteeism and grades (see Annual Report 08/09. The surveys revealed that over 90% of our students just worked on homework due to the fact that few freshmen came for help. The Education Department has had meetings with the math department to get the DSM students more involved. TWC 101 Freshmen will be strongly advised to come to the center. We will continue to track absenteeism and grades. More active recruitment of freshmen and other students via flyers and presentations. 4

5 Department Goal 8: Revise the PY190 class to address revision of Psychology Curriculum. s 1. To present revisions to Curriculum and Policy before the end of the school year. 2. To continue complete revision of Psychology offerings. Reaction of Curriculum and Policy Committee to presentation. Psychology Student Needs Survey The revision was reviewed by the Curriculum and Policy Committee and recommended a 2 s.h. course with grading (A,B,C,D,F) which would enhance GPA For PY 190, student feedback from the course concurred with C&P, that 1 s.h. was not sufficient considering the goals of the course. For general curriculum improvements, several psychology majors have suggested the addition of a forensic psychology focus to integrate our major with Criminal Justice. The C&P Committee s suggestions were used to revise the course and it was added to the Psychology Curriculum as PY 110. PY 190 was presented to C&P as PY 110 and it will be a required course for the major. A B.S. degree option in psychology is being considered. 5

6 Department Goal 9: TWC Advisory Board s 1. Include psychology and secondary majors. 2. Increase the community partnerships in the area. Students will keep minutes for the meetings. A business survey will go out the spring of There were no planned meetings this year. The business survey showed that over 80% of the businesses in the area would like to partner with TWC. A fall meeting is planned for late October of The Education Department will partner with the Servant Leadership Coordinator and cultivate partnerships in McMinn and Athens. 2. Enhance the LEA collaborative process. Analyze increase of programs and activities offered by TWC. Review current board and actively pursue new members. The Principal s survey showed 100% satisfaction with our students placed in their school. Continuation of assessments to insure satisfaction within the school systems. 3. Increase the student and community diversity on the TWC advisory board Family Fun Fair of 2009 Review of TWC Advisory Board Fun Fair Survey After reviewing the continuity of the board, less than 10% of the board is made up of TWC students. Win an N=45 on the survey, 75% of parents stated the fair was well-organized and met their expectations. Increase the number of TWC education students on advisory board. Continue the Family Fun Fair in the spring of Kids on Campus Kids on Campus survey The survey wasn t given in November of Continue the Kids on Campus program at TWC. 6

7 7. Continue Longitudinal Study Currently reviewing data from Pk,3,5, grades in McMinn and Loudon County schools. The data was extremely hard to collect and we didn t have much parent participation in this project. We will not continue this project in 2009/2010 school year. 8. Education Angels Marathon Project Review amount of student participation in project. The Angels pursued other projects for literacy this year. The Education Angels will continue with their literacy initiative in McMinn, Loudon, and Athens area schools. 8 Projected Department Goals Media carts for BE1 and the TLC - Being ordered in the fall of 2008 Explore Masters Degree Program in Early Childhood Currently contacting other programs for information Explore a new location for Psychology Lab That is on hold for this next year Gain a program outline of the Masters in Early Childhood This will begin after the SACS visit in September. Begin Masters degree program (summer of 2010) Work on Foreign Language Certification - We are in the final stages of approval Have a new Education/Psychology Building Increase programmatic offerings to include Special Education. We will work on this in 2009/ To continue to develop and increase certification offerings to include a Reading Specialist certification. 8
