1 South Evaluation Africa sheet The 6 Rainbow Nation 1 After you have tested your skills in the mock exam on pages in your textbook, fill in the self-assessment evaluation sheet for each part (the article and mediation). If you think you need further practice, have a look at the pages that follow. They will provide you with additional exercises for self-learning. Big Brother Britain (p. 126) A Understanding the text Writing an outline Writing an outline of a non-fictional text doesn t present a problem. My outline was concise (only included the most important points). I missed some important pros/cons or I included unnecessary information in my outline. My outline included all the necessary information but I found it difficult to express myself in my own words. I found it difficult to understand the text and therefore had a problem summarising it in outline form. B Text analysis Analysing the author s attitude I have no difficulty applying techniques of text analysis to determine the author s line of argument including underlying stylistic devices employed by the author. I discovered lots of examples for my analysis but had difficulty presenting them meaningfully. It was difficult to find relevant aspects of the language to support my analysis of the author s line of argument. Analysis is generally not my strong point and I struggled with the task at hand. C Writing 1. Writing a comment I have no difficulty writing a comment. I had enough arguments for the comment but I had a problem with the structure (e.g. organising the arguments sensibly and/or finding a good beginning and ending). I could hardly think of any arguments to support my opinion./i found it difficult to put forward my point of view. I generally find writing comments a real challenge. Writing a text of this length is somewhat problematic for me.
Evaluation sheet 6 2 Immer überall erreichbar Mediation (p. 127) Note-taking for a summary I understood the text fully so I was able to take notes for a summary in English without any major problems. I included all the necessary points. I understood the text, but it took me a long time to decide which points should be included in my summary. My summary included all the necessary information but I found it difficult to express myself in my own words in English. I missed some important aspects or my notes included unnecessary information. Therefore I had a problem summarising the text.
Exam training 6 3 Big Brother Britain (p. 126) A Understanding the text a) Read the text carefully and decide which of the following pieces of information are given in the text. 1. Britain has one of the highest levels of surveillance but surprisingly not as high as America. 2. The number of CCTVs has gone up by five times in the past three years. 3. It is estimated that people in London, for example, may be filmed as often as 300 times in one day! 4. Groups fighting for citizen s rights complain that the rules regulating the use of CCTV in Britain are too lenient and don t believe cameras help to reduce crime rates. 5. Professor Norris says that according to new research other countries like Germany and France are less wary of CCTV because there is more control there. 6. He adds that other countries uphold longstanding concepts like freedom of expression and assembly which people in Britain are completely unfamiliar with. 7. A further problem is a person s right to be informed as to how and where film footage is stored in the shops or in council buildings. So up to 70% of camera operators were acting illegally. 8. Some cameras are used to reveal unwanted people in shopping centres, for example teenagers who are hanging out, but not breaking the law. CCTV picks them up and security guards kick them out. 9. Professor Norris states that people regard CCTV as harmless rather seeing it as limiting their rights and that there have been much too many debates on the subject. 10. Opponents of CCTV say that it doesn t reduce crime. It just moves it to another place for a while and then it s back again; so most people would prefer money to be spent on more police officers instead. b) Correct the facts in the sentences that are wrong.
Exam training 6 4 B Text analysis a) Consider the heading. What hint does it give of Maxine Frith s line of argument? Do you think it is appropriate? Why or why not? b) Collect all the facts and figures presented in the text. What effect do they have on the reader? c) What is the effect of the author comparing Britain with other countries? d) Who does Frith quote to get her line of argument across? Are they for or against surveillance?
Exam training 6 5 C Writing a) Before you start writing, collect as many arguments as you can find for and against the statement. FOR AGAINST b) Decide whether you agree/disagree and, if appropriate, to what degree. Choose the best arguments and organise your material, starting with the weakest and ending with the strongest argument. You may collect a few examples your own and/or from the text but be sure they are relevant to your arguments: TIP: Keep your introduction to a minimum. Remember, too, to always link your statements to the initial question/ task (to avoid digressing) and conclude your comment with a brief summary of all your arguments. Immer überall erreichbar Mediation (p. 127) a) Before you read: Look at the heading. Do think the article will be for, against or neutral about always being available everywhere?
Exam training 6 6 b) Note down the keywords in each paragraph. Make sure you know their meaning in English. c) Use your keywords to summarise each paragraph. Make sure you include in your summary an explanation of the terms Internet of things, ambient intelligence and digital bubble. d) Now that you have worked on a summary of the article, look back at a). Do you still agree with your first impression after just reading the heading of the article?
Solutions Exam training 6 7 Big Brother Britain (p. 126) A Understanding the text a) b) 1. Britain has the highest level of surveillance, America has much more control. 2. The number of CCTVs has quadrupled in the past three years. 5. In America and France they ve been much more wary about CCTVs and there is more control than in Britain. 7. The public has right to be informed about CCTV in operation and about how they can see their own footage. 9. Professor Norris said that CCTV is generally seen as benign rather than as Big Brother-style surveillance and that there needs to be a wider debate relating to how it affects people s privacy and society in general. B Text analysis a) The heading Big Brother Britain suggests that Maxine Frith is against CCTV because Big Brother reminds us of George Orwell s dystopian novel 1984 which presents a very negative picture of a totalitarian state using surveillance to exercise power over its citizens. b) About four million cameras, one for every 14 people, watch every move of the population. The number of cameras has quadrupled in the past three years. Britain is the most watched population in the world. Up to 70 per cent of CCTV camera operators were breaking the rules. Millions of pounds have been handed out to police forces and councils to install CCTV systems Their effect is the understanding of how important the issue is and that it s time to change the situation. c) Comparing Britain with other countries underlines the great number of cameras in operation in Britain. No the country in the world has as many CCTVs as Britain. d) Frith quotes a deputy director of the Centre for Criminological Research in Sheffield, Professor Clive Norris, civil liberties groups, the Data Protection Act, Barry Hugill of the human rights and civil liberties organisation Liberty. They are all against CCTV. C Writing Lösungsvorschlag a) FOR prevents crime in some cases helps the police to identify criminals makes some people feel more secure (in lifts, multi-storey car parks, dark alleys) AGAINST it feels like you re a criminal invasion of privacy self-administered justice photos and videos of people may be passed to TV/press without permission crime rate has not been reduced by CCTV b) I disagree entirely with the statement. people feel like criminals (being watched everywhere in public, no place to hide) the degree of the invasion of privacy is too high (private contacts among people in public are constantly monitored) self-administered justice (police cannot control everything) photos and videos can be passed on to TV or the press (could be very harmful to individuals) crime rate has not been reduced (examples show this)
Solutions Exam training 6 8 Mediation (p. 127) a) The heading seems to be neutral about the topic discussed in the article. b) 1. revolution of media landscape in Germany, ZDF, remote control, more than 500 television channels, future of the digital technology, development of communication, long-term prediction 2. assumption about technology, Moore s law, semiconductor industry, a box as small as a mobile phone 3. Internet of Things, futurology, computers and other everyday objects linked up in cyberspace, ambient intelligence, digital bubble c) The article describes the development of communication technologies from its beginnings in the 1960s to present and possible future advancements. It points out that nobody could possibly have imagined just how fast these technologies would evolve. Only four decades have passed from the beginning of television to high speed Internet. Further, it is hardly possible to make predictions about how fast digital technology will continue to grow because communication also depends on culture. Forty years ago Gordon Moore, co-founder of Intel, predicted that the density of electronic circuits would double every twelve months. Over the years this law has been revised and reformulated a couple of times. It describes how communication technology might increase in the course of time. The Internet of things is a new concept describing how everything might be connected within a network, not only computers as we know them now. By 2030 your common tea pot would then know where the cups are, a book would transform from one into another piece of literature both then capable of accessing links to a third, your train ticket would inform you of delays or connecting trains and your laundry and your washing machine would decide together on the appropriate washing powder to use, order it and then do the laundry with absolutely no aid from you. All things would be surrounded by a digital aura which certain glasses or other instruments and access codes would enable you to see. This is called ambient intelligence, a kind of invisible bubble within which all personal information can be kept. d) I still agree with my first expression about the heading of the text: The heading seems to be neutral because no judgement is noticeable, only facts are stated.
Has globalisation made us more catastrophe-prone?
