2 2 The cloud transforms enterprise computing The rise of cloud computing is the culmination of an evolutionary process over the past two decades, from tightly controlled enterprise architectures to increasingly flexible and open user environments. In the early days of the PC era (1990s), users were constrained to specific locations and were provided standard, Windows - based devices. IT controlled where and how users could do their work, and users were generally fine with the arrangement since Internet usage was uncommon outside the office. The explosive rise and adoption of the Internet in the early 2000s accelerated remote workforce capabilities, allowing people to work from home and hotels on laptops. Still, IT retained total control over users devices and whether they were allowed remote access. This period also saw the introduction of new specialized tools for user provisioning, single sign-on, secure remote access and identity management. By the mid-2000s, broad business trends such as globalization and outsourcing placed new demands on IT. Developed with employees in mind not third-party workers the systems and methods used in the previous decade were poorly suited for supporting a more diverse workforce. The need to use multiple, siloed directories, IT infrastructure, identity management and security processes for different types of workers (contractors, outsourcing providers, partners, etc.), slowed even basic tasks such as user on-boarding and off-boarding. Remote access grew in importance as organizations sought to connect dispersed resources in a unified virtual and global enterprise. This highly complex IT environment also led to increasing support costs and a deteriorating user experience due to major differences in both performance and how apps were used as workers roamed from their standard location to either corporate branch offices or remote locations such as hotels and customer sites. 3 3 At the same time, technological breakthroughs in wireless connectivity and mobile devices have shattered traditional assumptions about endpoint computing. Many users especially members of the newest generation of workers arrive at the enterprise already accustomed to meeting their own personal technology needs, from mobile devices to self-provisioned apps. From their perspective, the rigidity and top-down nature of traditional IT strategies seem arbitrary and artificial. Why shouldn t people be allowed to use the same kinds of consumer technology, including laptops, smartphones and tablets, at work as well as at home a practice called consumerization? Why shouldn t they be able to access all their business apps from any device, as they can with consumer cloud services? The promise of mobility and cloud computing in the enterprise Indeed, these users have a point. The business benefits of worker mobility and cloud computing can be dramatic, including: Business agility. The ability to work anywhere using any device increases business agility and provides support for workshifting (the movement of tasks, processes and entire operations to more optimal places, organizations and devices). By delivering apps more easily across a complex and diverse set of endpoints, initiatives from enabling a mobile workforce to outsourcing to mergers and acquisitions can be completed more quickly. A unified service broker provides rapid on-boarding and off-boarding of new types of apps (web, SaaS, mobile, etc.) and new devices as business requirements change. Workforce productivity. A consistent experience across devices and locations including apps as well as data stored in the cloud allows users to get their work done in the most efficient way possible. In fact, a recent Citrix survey found that 64 percent of users work with three or more devices on an average day. 2 User choice and satisfaction. The shift to a device-independent computing architecture frees users from having to rely on standardized endpoints and allows them to choose the best device for any given task or location. The heterogeneity of computing environments will continue to explode as new user types, mobile devices, cloud apps and cloud-based IT services flow into the enterprise outside standard IT processes. Even as individual departments and users buy cloud-based services and mobile devices without engaging IT, they will still expect IT to support these assets after they have been procured. It s time to rethink the concept of control. IT needs a way to holistically secure and manage delivery of all apps to all device and user types. Authentication, authorization, encryption, data loss prevention and app usage must support the mobility and flexibility that are so vital to today s users. These capabilities are critical to protecting intellectual property and complying with regulations.
