To implement a health promotion project based on the Island Health Eating Together- Eating Better program addressing the Comprehensive School Health four pillars. 4.To collaborate with students and staff to promote health and wellness within the school community. 5.To promote collaborative partnerships with 3

7 What is eating together? Eating with at least one adult family member Frequency of 5 or more times per week Distraction free environment Positive Conversation 7
8 Eating Together - Why Promote it? Children who frequently eat together with at least one parent do better in school! are more connected to their families and friends have better social and language skills are more likely to be a healthy weight have a better understanding of family values and traditions are less likely to smoke are less likely to be bullied feel more secure and stable are less likely to use drugs have less risk have a are less likely to of depression greater sense use alcohol and suicide of belonging 8

12 Let s Talk Table Cards Set of 30 table cards that promote family meals and positive mealtime conversation. Developed in collaboration between Island Health and the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council Now available on the Better Together BC website: 12
13 How VIU Nursing Students are promoting Eating Together, Eating Better Teaching and Learning In the classrooms: We are creating interactive learning activities to teach school age children about the importance of family meals. Suggestion boxes in classrooms, to get ideas for future partnerships. Environments & Relationships We are writing a school newsletter article about the Eating Together program. Community Partnerships We are presenting to Youth Link to start an ongoing conversation about the importance of family meals in the community. 13
14 Addressing School Policies What Helene is promoting in other school districts: Encouraging teachers to eat with students. Teachers are often the meaningful adult in the child s life and can have a powerful influence. Avoid scheduling dinner time meetings and activities. What VIU Nursing Students are doing: We are learning about building healthy public policy as a way to promote health in the school district according to strategies outlined by the Ottawa Charter. Presenting to the School Board to create awareness about the Eating Together, Eating Better program. 14
