Programs offer College Level Credit for students that meet minimum requirements while in the skills center program. During your time at the skills center prepare for both entrance into a post-secondary program (two-year, fouryear, internship, apprenticeship) and career entry skills. You earn: 1. Career and Technical Education (CTE) What s in a name? Career and Technical Education (historically called vocational education) provides students a head start on college and careers in high-skill, high-wage, and high-demand occupations organized into career clusters, including: Information Technology, Architecture and Construction, Health Science, Business, Transportation, Manufacturing, Pre-Engineering and more. 2. Seattle Skills Center is for College and Career Bound Students In today s fast-paced work world, lifelong learning is a given. Skills center programs provide a sequence of advanced learning, hands-on application of industry and college preparation programs. Students that complete a skills center program graduate at a higher rate than those that do not (non-cte completer students high school graduation rate is 78%, CTE Completer students high school graduation is 89%). 3. Seattle Skills Center Students Earn College Credit and Industry Certifications Students at the skills center have an extra advantage after earning their high school diploma. Many of the skills center programs offer the opportunity to earn college credit for FREE while attending the skills center program. In addition students earn industry certification that gives them an advantage when applying to college and for employment. 4. Skills Center Students Directly Apply What they Learn in Academic Classes Students apply their academic knowledge with the hands-on learning in the skills center program. Students apply academic learning to real-world challenges connecting students to the challenges in the workplace. 5. Instructors are Industry Professionals Teaching with Up-to-Date Equipment and Technology Skills center instructors worked in the field as part of their certification. Industry advisory boards help the skills center design and equip learning labs with the most up-to-date industry standard. Culinary arts students learn in a commercial kitchen, and automotive technician students hone their skills using tools, equipment, and curriculum recommended by the National Automotive Training and Education Foundation (NATEF). 6. Save Money! This is the only time in advanced learning focused on career preparation where the learning is FREE to families no tuition check, no student loans or debt. Students can earn industry certification, without cost. Skills center students can save money on college tuition by earning college credit. Students gain knowledge and skills that better prepare them to earn better paying jobs in college and gain leadership skills to further advance in college and careers. Students get the opportunity to tryout a career cluster without paying for it what better time to learn what students want to do in their future and more importantly, learning what they may not want to do in the future without the added expense of college costs. 7. Programs are Designed for the Future Washington industries and businesses partner with Seattle School District, the Seattle Colleges, and the Washington State Department of Education to develop programs of study that prepare students with the knowledge and skills required for current and future careers in tomorrow s global economy. 8. 3 Seattle skills center courses Aerospace Science & Technology Launch your career and college acceptance by learning how to build, service, and modify aircraft and aircraft components. Learn safety, tool identification & proper use, fastener installation, aluminum & titanium metal drilling, the use of composite materials in the aircraft manufacturing industry, and gain industry experience and college credit. Math Cross-Credit Available Cisco/Information Technology Are you interested in taking advanced classes in Information Technology while still in high school? Looking for a way to pay for college or start a career in IT? Information Communications Technology (ICT) courses in Cisco CCNA and Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) will lead to industry certification. This is a great step for your future. Learn PC hardware, software, and networking operating systems. Earn industry certification and college credit. Math Cross-Credit Available Digital Animation & Game Design Create animation and games! The Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE) is a leading educator for Computer Game Development and 3D digital media. This college is a star of 3D animation, game design, and visual FX. This course is a great preparation for college and career. Learn sketching and storyboarding in 2D animation and concepts of 3D, learn skills necessary for a career in the animation and gaming industry. West Seattle High School Pre-Requisites REQUIRED: Art Course OR Portfolio Fine Arts Cross-Credit Available College Credit Available Maritime Science & Technology Seattle is surrounded by water and careers in the maritime industry. Prepare for college, career, and the maritime environment in this program. Learn safety, tool identification & proper use, fastener installation, aluminum & titanium metal drilling, the use of composite materials in the maritime manufacturing industry, and gain valuable college and career skills. Geography, map skills, and boating are also essential in this program. Ballard High School Math Cross-Credit Available Equity and Compliancy Policy Construction Trades & Pre-Apprenticeship The Construction Trades & Pre-Apprenticeship program provides experience in the skilled trades through classroom learning and paid internships. Skilled trades include crafts such as carpentry, plumbing, auto mechanics, electrical work and more. Students will intern under the supervision of a journey-level mentor. Internship sponsors include City of Seattle, King County, King County Dept. of Transportation, Painters and Allied Trades, and Port of Seattle. After high school, students have the opportunity for possible direct entry into an apprenticeship. Fire Science This course prepares students for careers as fire fighters and in other emergency services careers. The cadet will be able to preside, guide, or manage self, others, activities or events with responsibility for the final outcome; apply leadership skills in real-world, family, community, and business/industry applications; and be tested on their ability to work with peers in a variety of subject areas by completing a myriad of projects and preparations at the highest levels. Pre-Requisites NONE Multimedia Broadcasting Multimedia Broadcasting provides students with a hands-on experience in a working radio facility. Students learn the ins and outs of the multimedia industry, including web design, podcasting, blogging, and communications using industry expectations and standards. Go beyond playing music; learn the history of the industry as well as the future of multimedia broadcasting. Nathan Hale High School Auto Body Collision Students enrolled in this introductory automotive collision repair course will receive instruction in safety, hazardous materials, welding (oxyacetylene, MIG), tools, unibody construction, metal straightening, and principles of refinishing. South Seattle Community College Automotive Technology NATEF Interested in a hands-on class that requires critical thinking as well as an interest in the auto industry? Gain a solid foundation in automotive technology and the skills for gainful employment. You will learn about brake systems, maintenance, and other systems that function within a vehicle. Gain certification that meets industry needs. College credit may be earned in this program. Washington Middle School Culinary Arts Hospitality is one of the fastest growing areas in the Seattle area. Join an exciting, demanding, professional culinary class and prepare for careers as a personal chef, catering operations, restaurant, baking, and food service. Advanced training includes food preparation, culinary arts and food presentation, safety, sanitation, job shadowing, career skills including catering events, and preparation for industry education. Additional Fees and Requirements Medical Assisting/Health Sciences Enter a fast-growing medical profession. Practice and learn the language and skills of doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals. This course provides students with a broad survey of core skills needed in the Health Sciences cluster and leads to high-demand health and medical careers. The class uses leadership projects, modules, and project-based activities in school and community-based industry settings. Lincoln Building Pre-Requisites REQUIRED: Family Health or Nutrition/Wellness or Human Development or Food Science or Biomedical Science or Sports Medicine or Health Care Intro Lab Science or Math Cross-Credit Available Additional Fees and Requirements Nursing Assistant/ Medical Careers Medical careers are among the fastest growing in our economy. The Skills Center program of study in Medical Careers prepares students for foundation medical skills including: job shadows, externships, on-site hands-on practice and Nurse Assistant certification. Learn and use medical terminology, computer and clinical skills, medical assisting, communications, business application and law & ethics. 4 SUMMeR SCHOOL InFORMaTIOn Make your summer count with FRee Hands-on Learning and earn.5 high school elective credit! Who is eligible? The Skills Center summer school program is available to ALL Seattle School District students entering grades 9 12 during the school year. dates: Session 1: June 29 July 15 (no school July 3 in observance of Independence Day) Session 2: July 16 July 31 Times: Daily 6.5 hours: 8-2:30 daily Locations: Multiple location options for students H.S. Credit: Students can earn.5 high school elective credit for successful completion of a summer school class. Some classes may receive academic credit (math, lab science, or art credit). Good attendance is very important; therefore, you may want to plan your vacations accordingly. Students may only miss TWO days of class. Summer school does earn credit and therefore, the grade goes on the students official transcript. If a student earns an A, it goes on the transcript, if a student earns an E, it also goes on the transcript. Students can select up to two different courses, one for each session - students cannot earn the same credit twice. Transportation: Students that need an ORCA can request a pass free of charge. Cost: Some programs require a lab fee to participate (no more than $15). There is funding available for those that qualify. Registration begins on March 1st Complete the summer school application: 1. Students that complete a sequence of career and technical education programs GRADUATE high school at a higher rate than those who do not complete a career and technical education sequence. Skills Center students regularly participate in industry and college tours and are exposed to a wide-range of opportunities. Summer school skills center students engage in enhanced career readiness and goal planning during the introductory level courses offered. So, what will I do during summer school? - Complete Interest Survey - learn your path to your future - Meet and Tour Local Colleges - Meet and Tour Local Business - Prepare for internship, mentorship, job-shadow - Have Fun!
5 summer school Courses CLASSES OFFERED THIS SUMMER: Introduction to Automotive Students learn basic vehicle maintenance and safety needs. Simple, money-saving procedures that can be performed at home will be covered. At the conclusion of this course, students will also have an understanding of the automotive field as a career choice. Introduction to Construction This course provides hands-on activities in the construction field. The use of hand and power tools, basic plan reading and basic carpentry skills will be covered. (lab fee $15) Introduction to Medical Careers Explore the diverse world of health/medical careers. Meet professionals from various specialties. Discover ways to keep yourself healthy! Intro to Cisco Are you interested in learning the basics of Cisco networking? Do you like the idea of learning programming and coding? This introductory course exposes students to the various careers in information technology and the basics of computer programming and networking. The class focuses on hands-on learning and exploration. Introduction to Fire Science Interested in a career of public service such as law enforcement, firefighting, or homeland security? Then this class is for you. Through hands-on training and experience, research based learning, and guest speakers you will learn how these groups work together to keep the public safe. You will learn how to respond to a variety of critical incidents. Computer Applications Students apply job search techniques to create a resume, references and a cover letter based on career and college interest areas. Students demonstrate an understanding of the importance of positive attitude and self-image. Develop computer skills needed to succeed in today s job market and college by learning a variety of software programs such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, as well as Excel and Access. 1GB jump drive recommended. Introduction to Culinary Arts Develop your culinary know how in this introductory course. Develop connections in the community while on various field trips and through guest speaker opportunities within the classroom. Practice safe management of foods using proper sanitation and safety techniques and learn the principles of food service management. Students enrolled in this course must have their food handler s card within a week of class beginning. ($15 lab fee). AIE Cyber Camp Learn about digital art, animation, and gaming at the Academy of Interactive Entertainment! Students learn basic principles of animation, creating a moving walking character. Students engage in hands-on learning with Photoshop and the basics of C programming while creating a simple video game in Unity. ** This program does not follow the same schedule as the rest of summer school. Introduction to Engineering Are you interested in a hands-on opportunity to explore problem-solving skills with an emphasis on the development of three-dimensional solid models? Students work from sketching simple geometric shapes to applying a solid modeling computer software package. Learn problem-solving design processes and how they are used in industry to manufacture a product from inception to sale. ($15 lab fee). Introduction to Maritime Explore how the successful maritime industry developed in Seattle, focusing on the Ballard area with regular field trips to various maritime related industries. Gain knowledge and handson opportunities to learn the basics of boaters safety, navigation, and various terminology connect ed to the maritime industry. Develop your maritime knowledge through project-based curriculum, combining classroom lessons with real-life examples of challenges in the industry. Introduction to Multi-Media Learn about the various types of multi-media and how media can be used to reach a wide range of audiences. Students learn the history of media and broadcasting, the rules and regulations required by the FCC, and have the opportunity to develop their own media platforms. Take field trips into the world of media broadcast to learn about the variety of career opportunities available. Introduction to Aerospace Students learn the history of the aerospace industry and the economically strong aerospace industry in the Seattle area; participate in hands-on problem solving activities that provide realworld challenges faced in the aerospace industry today. ($15 lab fee) Student Voice: Summer school gave me a chance to learn something new and make new friends I got to go on field trips and even got to go to a farm to pick berries for class Class was fun but the field trips were awesome! Parent Voice: Thank you for offering summer school. My son had such a great time and really liked his class this summer. I am so glad you offered summer school, my child enjoyed the teacher and the program. She feels more prepared to go to high school now. Teacher Voice: The students that participated in summer school this summer got to experirence so many different career-based learning through hands-on learning. What a great experience for everyone, students got to put learning into action and represented the district well on field trips - parents should be proud!
