1 Project Management Specialization University of Calgary PROGRAMME INFORMATION
2 Project Management University & Industry Corporate managing of mega projects and businesses is becoming increasingly competitive. Today s advanced Project Management is seen as a way to improve predictability, efficiency and effectiveness on projects. A big part of this success lies in its demonstrated ability to transfer rigorous research into practical tools, processes and competencies that can save - and have saved - industry hundreds of millions of documented dollars as well as time for delivery, with better and more predictable end results. Project Management Certification helps your employees prepare for the business of tomorrow while managing the business of today. The project management specialization which started in 1983, was the original brainchild of enthusiastic people from industry who saw the need for formal project management education and training to encourage the ability for Albertans to successfully deliver increasingly competitive and challenging capital projects. The project management advisory council (PMAC), was then formed in 1983 by a group of approximately forty senior industry personnel and University of Calgary faculty to oversee and guide the development of the project management specialization. This led the development and direction of the graduate programme. The specialization continued to rely on a dedicated group of individuals primarily from industry but also from academia to guide its on-going development as it strived to meet the educational and research needs of future project managers. The research programme was introduced in 1994 by establishing the NSERC/SSHRC chair in project management for the management of technological change at the University of Calgary held by Dr. Francis Hartman and supported by some 40 leading and visionary Alberta corporations. Over the years, programs and courses that have been developed and taught in close cooperation with industry, are offered to practicing engineers, project managers and key project management support personnel in those areas recognized by industry as essential for the effective execution of capital projects. Project management research has been undertaken in several areas supported by many industrial partners. This added value by creating a better relationship between industry and the programme that not only established unique opportunities for students to be actively involved in groundbreaking research but also brought value-added benefits to industrial partners. Project Management programme has several strong links with international partners for both training and research in North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
3 Academic & Industry Collaborations Teaching and Industry The Project Management Specialization benefits from the hands-on direction of leaders in industry. It would not have been possible for the Specialization to attain its current level of teaching or research had it not been for the generous support of NSERC, SSHRC, industry and the academic community. The Project Management Specialization gratefully acknowledges the support of the following sponsors and supporters. Please note that admission to graduate programs is highly competitive, all graduate programs have limited enrolment capabilities, and there is no general right of admission. The committee not only considers the applicant's credentials, but also reviews the availability of resources for supervision and research, departmental research objectives, program balance, and so forth. The Faculty of Graduate Studies subsequently reviews those applications to ensure that the students meet the minimum requirements for admission. If those requirements are met then the Faculty of Graduate Studies notifies the student that he/she has been accepted into the Faculty.
