3 Faculty of Business INTRODUCTION Bachelor of Business and Business Majors in Combined Degrees The Bachelor of Business (BBus) degree has a flexible structure that allows a range of choices in study programs. In the BBus, the first year is common to all students (with a choice of two degree electives). Students then elect to specialise in a Major offered by the Faculty of Business. BBus students must complete the following requirements: A Major consisting of: " 2 Introductory units " 2 Intermediate units " 4 Advanced units A Linked Minor consisting of: " 2 Introductory units " 2 Intermediate units Plus 4 Degree Elective units as specified for each Major and Linked Minor combination. Plus 8 Student Elective units. These 8 units may be a second major from the Faculty of Business, or a major from another Faculty within the University of Tasmania. International students will need to apply through the International Services Office English language skills will also need to be verified. You should ensure that as far as possible you undertake the units within your major in the order in which they are listed in this booklet. This will ensure that your studies are not delayed by either the requirements for prerequisites or the scheduling of units. The offering of each of the units in this booklet may be dependent on there being sufficient numbers enrolled at the relevant campus. This guide is designed to summarise the options available to you, and to provide a record for your use. We hope that it will become a valuable guide to assist you through your undergraduate studies within the Bachelor of Business. Please remember to bring this booklet with you whenever you are seeking course advice. 2

4 Faculty of Business GENERAL INFORMATION Some units are displayed in this brochure with more than one unit code. For example: BMA151/251 Principles of Marketing Students should enrol in the level of unit that matches their year of study. A first year student would enrol in BMA151 Principles of Marketing whereas a second year student would enrol in BMA251 Principles of Marketing. A third year student would choose the highest level code available for the unit, in this case BMA251. Candidates for other degrees in this or other faculties should ensure that they enrol in units at the level/s required by their particular degree. These students should also observe the minimum numbers of units at particular levels that are permitted by their degree. BAA320/BAA321/BAA322 Corporate Internship Students who wish to enrol for this unit should contact the Corporate Internship Director, see information at the end of this brochure. SPRING AND SUMMER SCHOOL Spring and summer school offerings are normally published on the Faculty of Business website in August each year. Please refer to the individual school website or contact the school. (see back cover) Important note: Students who commenced their degree prior to 2010 will note that there have been changes to the structure of the degree. Students continue with the rules applicable at the commencement date of their degree and/or of their major(s). Please refer to the online course and unit database for the relevant year s requirements Where a core unit is no longer available, a substitute will be approved by the Head of School. 3

33 Your Degree Planner " Check the available units for your degree on the online UTAS Course and Unit handbook; " Use this planner to plan out the units you wish to study in your first year and; " Enrol online at the estudentcentre: What are the requirements for my degree? You need to complete a major, a minor, 4 degree electives and 8 student electives, within the ranges below: Introductory level: A minimum of 8 and a maximum of 10 units Intermediate level: A minimum of 6 and a maximum of 10 units Advanced level: A minimum of 6 and a maximum of 10 units The unit levels in the major and minor are fixed (shown in the bottom row of the diagram on the inside back cover of this booklet). The flexibility in the levels is in the degree electives and particularly the student electives. What are student and degree electives? Student electives are your choice of unit, taken from any study area across the University, if you are eligible (ie: meet any pre-requisites), and within the unit requirements above. You can take up to a second major in another area, or another minor, and try out other subject areas - it's your choice. Degree electives are units chosen from the degree schedule at introductory and intermediate levels. In some degrees there may be a limited choice of units or required degree electives. See behind the back cover for rest of the Degree Planner 32
