COURSE DESCRIPTION Comparison, analysis, and description of selected cultures of the world from the simple to the complex, including the social evolution of societies from bands to states and the determinants of change. (Core B) (D) Note: This anthropology course is conducted completely online but will cover the same topics as an in-person classroom environment. Weekly assignments will introduce students to the topics covered in the textbook. Additional readings and multimedia will be based upon available e-reserve holdings and resources on the internet. The readings and visual media will expand on the concepts being discussed in class and will enhance the student s ability to understand the anthropological perspective. Each week students will be expected to read the appropriate texts and articles, complete the assignments, and participate in online discussions. Prerequisites None Revision Date: Dec 26, 2014

Online Resources Online resources used for this course will include articles and films found on databases available through the College or available to the public. INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS In keeping with the College s objectives for the course, upon completion of the course material you will be able to: Identify the various determinants of cultural behavior: for example, why Nayar women marry twelve husbands or why the Hindus don t eat cows Display an understanding of the concept of cultural relativity and explain why it is a cornerstone of the anthropological perspective List the dangers of ethnocentrism Demonstrate an understanding of the role that technology and environment play in molding cultural behavior Identify the basic principles of cultural materialism and cultural-ecology as well as other philosophical schools in anthropology Display a knowledge and appreciation of various cultural behaviors throughout the ethnographic world Identify the social, economic, and political characteristics of selected bands, tribes, chiefdoms, and states Display a knowledge of the major causes of cultural change (evolution) from egalitarian societies through complex states Revision Date: Dec 26, 2014

Postings: Students are expected to participate in class discussions. Unless otherwise noted, to earn full credit, a typical weekly discussion posting assignment includes a personal response to the discussion question and a response to a posting from another student. The original posting must address the question or topic of discussion. The response must include thoughtful consideration of the class members response as it relates to the discussion topic. Although we are in virtual space, it is necessary to remember that we are practicing our scholarly skills when participating in an online course. Be open to different viewpoints and opinions. While it is not wrong to disagree, remember to address your classmates with a scholarly attitude and professional manner. POLICIES AND PROCEDURES Grading Policies: Points will be deducted for late assignments. Two points will be deducted for each day an assignment is late. If circumstances prevent you from meeting a deadline, please communicate with me in a timely manner to discuss. Written appeals of an assigned grade will be considered 24 hours after the return of an assignment or exam. You must state the reason that you are disputing a grade. Extra credit work is acceptable. Consult with the instructor to determine the requirements and appropriateness of an extra credit assignment. 6 Syllabus for Anth 205 Page 6 Attendance/Participation (consistent with AP 661) : Students are expected to actively participate in the class and are responsible for all class-related work and assignments. This includes weekly discussion postings. Simply logging in to the course does not constitute participation. A student will be withdrawn from the course for nonparticipation after missing more than 15% of class time (11 days for a full part of term course). The grade earned at the point of withdrawal will determine which withdrawal grade is assigned, (W or F). Please contact me if you are unable to participate for an extended period of time. Student Initiated Withdrawal (consistent with AP 667): Note: Please be aware that the assignment of a W, I, or Y grade may adversely affect the award of financial aid, veteran s benefits, immigration status, and/or other benefits. Students are responsible for withdrawing from the course if they do not intend to continue participation. Information about withdrawal procedures and the appropriate forms can be found at: Withdrawing during the full refund period: Students do not need instructor signatures to withdraw during the full refund period. Withdrawal can be initiated online through your myhacc portal to HACCWeb. Alternatively, you can submit the Drop/Add/Withdrawal Form to your campus Welcome Center. Withdrawing during the half refund period: Students do not need instructor signatures to withdraw during the half refund period. Students must submit the Drop/Add/Withdrawal Form to their campus Welcome Center. Withdrawing after the refund period and before midterm: Please submit a signed and dated Drop/Add/Withdrawal Form via your HAWKMail account to me at cascheib@hacc.edu. Students who have been actively participating in the course will receive a W grade. 7 Syllabus for Anth 205 Page 7 Requesting an Incomplete (I) grade: If extenuating circumstances prevent a student from completing the requirements of the course by the end of the term, they may request an Incomplete grade. Please contact me to discuss the conditions of completing the coursework and to determine if an I grade is appropriate. SEMESTER PROJECT Content: The final project will be a cross-cultural comparison of three cultures on chosen topic. You will be choosing from a list of cultures and topics provided by me; however, I am always open to substitutions if you have a particular interest in a culture or practice that is not listed. You must have the substitution approved by me prior to beginning your research. The project will be separated into two separate assignments: Rough draft/outline: A preliminary outline of your literature research. Total Length: 3 pages including the reference page. Final Draft: Your completed cross-cultural comparison that includes An introduction to the topic. Overview of the cultures being compared. Explanation of each cultural approach to the topic. Comparison of the cultural approaches. Summary Total Length: 6-7 pages including the reference page. Paper Format: Both the outline/rough draft and final draft should follow the same format. 1 margins Times New Roman, 12pt. Double-spaced; Header should include: o Student Name, Course Name, and CRN; left-aligned o Page Number; right-aligned Citation and References should follow the AAA Style Guide o Title should be 14pt Times New Roman and center-aligned on the first page. Paragraphs can be either left-aligned or justified.

8 Syllabus for Anth 205 Page 8 Grading: Both the outline/rough draft and the final paper will be graded on content and whether all required elements are present in the paper. Points will be deducted for excessive spelling and grammar mistakes. I will return an annotated version of your essay with appropriate comments and explanations for deductions. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Academic Dishonesty (AP 594): Academic dishonesty will be dealt with in accordance with College Policy and Procedures. Academic honesty is one of the fundamental principles upon which the College was founded and upon which it must operate to continue to perform its most important function. Students are expected to be honest in all of their academic endeavors. The College views academic dishonesty as a serious breach of conduct. Academic dishonesty is defined as an intentional act of deception in which a student seeks to claim credit for the work or effort of another person, or uses unauthorized material or fabricated information in any academic work. It includes, but is not limited to: cheating, plagiarism, buying or selling of class documents, falsifying of one's own or another's records, or knowingly assisting someone who engages in any of the above. Depending upon the nature and severity of the dishonest act, the faculty and the College may discipline a student for verifiable acts of dishonesty occurring in or out of the classroom. This policy shall be implemented according to regulations approved by the President.
