Just what are we talking about? Business Intelligence (BI) - a set of theories, methodologies, architectures, and technologies that transform raw data into meaningful and useful information for business purposes Wikipedia -taking unstructured, voluminous quantities of valuable information and harvesting metrics, analytics, and interpretations across multiple dimensions -allows stakeholders to translate white noise into an understanding of trends and performance then strategize accordingly Data Analysis - a process of inspecting, cleaning, transforming, and modeling data with the goal of discovering useful information, suggesting conclusions, and supporting decision making Wikipedia -includes descriptive and predictive modes of statistics 2
Who is Levenfeld Pearlstein? 60 attorney Chicago law firm 9 practice groups ProLaw (v11) What is our Business Intelligence Tool? LP Connect Intranet with dashboard reporting system Background Info 3
1. Develop an early warning system for key performance indicators that attorneys need to know in order to better manage their matters, their client relationships and themselves. 2. Provide a central point where attorneys and paralegals utilize, share and maintain the tools of their trade. Business Challenge 4
Too much information distributed too late Lack of accountability for goals and objectives Runaway matters What gets measured gets done Why did we build LP Connect? 5
Goals Dashboard Personal and group plan goals Transparency Interactive Alert Workflows 6
Timekeeper Dashboard Utilization summary with budget comparison Top clients worked Graphical display of billable and nonbillable time categories User defined reporting periods Multi period comparability Drill down capability 7
Matters Dashboard Early Warning System Matter Budgets Active matters in descending order Drill down to receipt history and WIP/AR aging info 8
Partner Dashboard Firmwide receipts and production actual vs budget Report distribution Surveys 9
Practice Group Leader Dashboard Group utilization Top clients Individual attorney performance User defined periods Multi period comparability Drill down capability 10
Executive Committee Dashboard Tailored reporting Meeting minutes Organizational Documents Task force reports Strategic plans 11
Eliminates redundancy Informs decision makers Enhances collaboration Focuses attention Increases accountability Changes behavior LP Connect Impact 12
Executive Committee proposal and buy-in Strategic key technology partnerships Project management techniques Interview, interview, interview How Did We Build LP Connect? 13
First envision -- then attach technology Be prepared to change the vision Do whatever it takes to get the attention of key stakeholders Ask why at least a thousand times Be open-minded, resourceful, creative and flexible Understand the tradeoffs with each decision Lessons Learned 14
Seyfarth Shaw LLP -Full Service Law Firm -14 Offices (domestic and international) -800 Attorneys SeyfarthLink -custom built Client Collaboration Platform -SharePoint 2010 backbone (migrating to SharePoint 2013 this month) -integrates Dundas Dashboard for business intelligence and data analytics Overview 15
Case Study 1: Client-facing Business Intelligence and Data Analytics Business Problem Client needs (explicit and implicit) are changing Greater emphasis on quantitative management and control Transparency becoming key to retention and expansion Limit surprises Desire to look past the financials Technical Challenges SharePoint as delivery vehicle Disparate data sources (SP lists, custom DBs, Elite, spreadsheets, etc.) Multiple domains 16
17 Began with Financials (Telerik + Grey Matter)
18 Moved to PivotPoint for SP List Reporting (Quick and Easy)
Case Study 1: Litigation Portfolio Business Problem Large volume of cases (150+ open at any point in time) Need improved awareness at macro-level Trends, patterns and distribution Data Collected Case profile information Financial information Client business information (business unit, product line, associated counsel, etc.) 19
Evolved to Dundas (Enterprise Grade Visualization Platform)
Case Study 2: OSHA Reporting Business Problem Respond to and manage multiple OSHA-related issues for client Interested in discerning patterns in client s data and government data Lots of activity, so increasing need for management effectiveness Data Collected Client business information (business unit, product line, associated counsel, etc.) Client profile information (details about incident) Government data 21
Increased Mastery of Dundas (Better Interface; HTML5 use)
Case Study 3: Administrative Charges and Risk Reporting Business Problem Respond to emerging requests for early risk assessment and predictive analysis Need to track and identify trends in EEOC administrative charges Data Collected Administrative charge data (location, claim codes, EEOC district, case outcome) Client and Seyfarth information (line of business, Seyfarth responsible attorneys) 23
Trends and Patterns in Administrative Charges 24
Risk scores based on statistical modeling; Ability to drill down into high risk cases 25
Lessons Learned Tool Selection is Difficult Power BI vs. Tableau vs. Dundas vs. It s the little things that kill All about the Visualization Great data and great methods falter without the right mode of conveyance More science than art 26
Emerging Trends Much Greater Focus on Data Enterprise-wide Big data s great but let s just talk data Understanding that data points outside the financial realm are key (leading vs. lagging indicia) Moneyball for Legal Deeper analytical tests Remember all those statistics classes? (multiple regressions, Χ 2 tests and so forth) Predictive vs. descriptive 27
