We have had great success in the past two years because of the participation and efforts of Tibet supporters like you. It is vital that you communicate to your

This annual event is essential as a response to Chinese President Hu s state visit to Washington, and to ensure that Tibet remains on the U.S. legislative agenda for the long-term. Part of ICT's core advocacy work in Washington, D.C. is lobbying Congress and we are pleased to set up meetings for you with your Members of Congress. We will provide you lobbying tips and other materials to make your meetings as impactful as possible. ICT will also make available to you lobbying training sessions at our office in Washington, DC. Because Congress has an intensely busy schedule in March, it is very important that we know who is coming as soon as possible. Page 2 of 2 - Short Summary and Profile: Jigme Gyatso [Chinese: 晋 美 加 措, Pinyin Name: Jinmei Jiacuo], a 45-year-old former Tibetan Buddhist monk, is serving an 18-year prison sentence in Chushur (Chinese: Qushui) prison near Lhasa for "counter revolutionary" activities. Originally sentenced to 15 years in 1996, Jigme Gyatso received a three-year extension in 2004 after shouting pro-dalai Lama slogans while in Drapchi Prison, Lhasa. His current known release date is believed to be 30 March Gyatso received the longest sentence of a group of five Tibetans who carried out various acts of peaceful resistance, including putting up a Tibetan national flag at Ganden monastery and discussing Tibetan independence. Fears for Jigme Gyatso's safety were raised after he met and spoke with UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Dr Manfred Nowak, during an official prison visit in November Dr Nowak subsequently called for his release and stated in his official UN report about the visit: "Since he [Jigme Gyatso] has been convicted of a political crime, possibly on the basis of information extracted by torture, the Special Rapporteur appeals to the [Chinese] Government that he be released." Soon after Dr Nowak's visit, reports emerged that Jigme Gyatso had been hospitalized in early 2006 for a period of several weeks and is now unable to walk properly due to a leg injury. During his 15 years of imprisonment, Jigme Gyatso has endured severe torture on several occasions, including one incident in 1997 when he was beaten so severely that he could not move for several days.
