Gareth McLean finds out I was at Nairn s ook School, and I was there to learn. This would be harder than it sounded, as cooking was never my best subject at school. Even at 13, I knew that the look on my mum s face as she tried to eat one of my inventions was not enjoyment. The best advice I can give you, Nick said at the end of that day, is don t worry. Too late. I spent a sleepless night planning. ut the next day, despite my fears, it was all surprisingly easy, and the food was excellent. y the time it was ready, we were all exhausted but hungry. 14 hildhood Homes Four people look back at the homes they grew up in. GREY KNG. Dillon People move into new houses for a variety of reasons, and our family moved to get away from the water that used to come up through the floor in our living room. We lived in a fisherman s cottage by the sea, and it flooded every spring and autumn. The new, dry, fiveroom apartment was a luxury. I shared a bedroom with my two brothers, two of my sisters shared another and my eldest sister, aroline, who needed peace and quiet to study, had a room to herself. I didn t enjoy school, so my bedroom became my secret place of refuge. Kenny I grew up on a big farm. My childhood away from school was wonderful, although the farmhouse was in very poor condition. I sometimes wore more clothes going to bed than during the day. My father used to say central heating was bad for your health. We ran a dairy farm with 150 cows and, boy, were they noisy. If I was lucky I managed to miss the milking at 4.30am, but I d rarely stay in bed past 7am. I loved helping on the farm, though it was hard, but worth it. I don t know where I would be now if I hadn t had that kind of upbringing. My family were great and they encouraged me to keep busy on the farm, so I could forget about my problems at school. Rugby was the other thing that helped. My brothers were much older than me, so I spent most of my time with my cousins, who introduced me to the game. Ewan My family had gone to live in ustralia before I was born but we returned home to Scotland because my father wanted to go to university there. My parents had very little money, but we managed to rent a canal boat. It had two tiny bedrooms so my younger brother and I shared a bed. I was eleven years old and had an ustralian accent, but I soon adapted to my new life, though I couldn t believe how cold it got in winter! My brother and I sang in a local choir. I remember singing at a wedding and getting a fee for it! My father got a job in a restaurant during the university holidays. He brought home some of the food that was left over at the end of the day, and I will never forget the taste of the chef s special icecream. The canal was very busy in those days and I often got up really early so I could spend some time watching the boats go past before I went to school. It was a magical time. D John When I was two years old we went to live in a castle which had been turned into a hotel. My father was the head chef there. I started music as a hobby because my parents encouraged me to do something that was going to help me mix with other children, as the hotel was a long way from the nearest village. I decided to try singing and auditioned for a local children s choir, only to be turned down. So I played the saxophone instead. In those days people had to make their own fun. My siblings and I were forever putting on concerts for my parents. They believed we should express ourselves freely, discover our own passions. I was very close to my brother we were more like friends than siblings. We loved playing tricks on the hotel guests, which really drove our parents mad. pagina 48
