1 Internet Agreement for Middle School Parents and Kids I will keep myself safe. I will not give out any personal information, like my age, last name, address or phone number, or meet someone I ve met online, without my parents permission. I will not put myself at risk by posting or sending inappropriate photos. I will block creepy messages from people I don t know. I will tell my parents or an adult I trust if anything happens online that makes me feel uncomfortable, upset or sad. I will not share my password with anyone other than my parents, even my best friend. I will set privacy controls and discuss with my parents when I want to create a social networking profile. I will think first. I agree that not all TV shows, movies, games, music and Web sites are right for me. I will talk to my parents if I am not sure what s appropriate. If my family has rules about ratings, I will follow them. I know that not everything I read or see is true, and I will think about whether a source is credible. I agree not to download anything or fill out surveys without my parents permission. I know that the pictures and videos I post online, and everything that I write about myself and my friends, will likely be online forever. Therefore I will not put anything on my profile that I wouldn t want my parents, teachers, college admissions officers or future bosses to see. I will keep a healthy balance. Even though I love media, there are other things in my life that I m interested in. So I will help my parents set time limits that make sense and then I will follow them. I will help my parents understand why media is so important to me, but also recognize that my safety is more important to them than anything else. In exchange, my parents agree to: Recognize that media/technology is a big part of my life, even if they don t always understand why. Before saying no talk with me about what worries them and why. Embrace my world: understand downloads, IM, online games and the sites that I like. Signed by my Me Signed by my Parents Date I will be a good digital citizen. I agree not to bully anyone online or on my cell phone by sending pictures or sharing videos without the permission of the person(s) in the photo/video, or by spreading gossip, setting up fake profiles or saying cruel things about people. I agree not to use technology to cheat in games or on schoolwork. I agree to flag and report content that is inappropriate. Adapted from Common Sense media agreement for parents and kids grades 6-8
3 Benton Middle School TECHNOLOGY PROTOCOL GUIDELINES An exciting part of the learning community at Benton Middle School is the use of technology in the classroom. List below is the protocol for using ipads/technology within my classes: All students are required to complete the Benton Agenda in writing using a pen/pencil. Students may not use any electronic media to replace the Agenda. Electronic media is defined as items used to broadcast or store media/communications or allows distribution of that media that takes advantage of electronic technology- such as cell phones, tablets, and/or music devices, but may also include new technology as it develops and is determined by the school or district. After the Agenda is completed, students must turn off all cell phones, place cell phone in a secure section of their backpacks/student bag and clear apps on the ipad. Cell phones may not come out of packs unless authorized by teacher. ipads may remain out as determined by the lesson/activity of the assignment/instruction. IPads will be fully charged for each school day. Teachers are not responsible for students that may experience a loss of information due to the inability to participate in the daily class instruction. Students will be responsible for the security of their ipad including, but not limited to, loaning out their ipad to other students or leaving their ipads unsupervised. Students will stay on task/topic during class. Students will travel electronically only to applications (apps)/websites that are directed by the teachers. Teachers /district administrators reserve the right to check activity on the ipad at all times without notice while on the Benton Middle School campus. Students will not delete or tamper with the configuration of the ipad or its profiles; including jailbreaking the ipad, change of name on the ipad, or removal of any self- service products. Students/parents will report damage or loss to the Teacher and make an appointment with the school district/apple Care to repair the problem/s The ipad is considered a tool to enhance the learning process. It may not be used for recreational use (i.e. gaming or other apps that may be considered recreational ) during class time. All videos/recordings/pictures must be completed with teacher permission as well as the consent of the subjects involved. If permission by subjects has not been granted and a student records without permission, student may receive some form of consequence. Messaging from parent/guardian to student s ipad during class time is not desirable. Please contact the office to have a message relayed to a student during school hours. ipad needs to be placed on do not disturb mode during the school day so that updates/notification/messages sounds will not disrupt classroom- learning time.
4 Airdrop must be turned off during the school day unless permission is given by the teacher or administrator for use in the classroom. Students will follow all of the guidelines listed above as part of a promise and commitment to the Benton Magnet Program and the ipad 1:1 program. Devices should come to school fully charged everyday. Charging in class will only be allowed at the discretion of the teacher. (EC 51512) The use by any person, including a pupil of any electronic listening or recording devices in any classroom without prior consent of the teacher and the Principal/Administration is prohibited as it disrupts and impairs the teaching process of discipline in the schools. Any person, other than the pupil, willfully in violation shall be guilty of a misdemeanor. Any pupil in violation shall be subject to appropriate disciplinary action. Students understand that using technology in the classroom is an opportunity to enhance the learning process and therefore must respect protocols in put in place by the school and administration. If a student does not wish to follow the protocols in place, the student, parent/guardian, teacher, and administration can meet to discuss an alternative learning environment. I understand and have read the BENTON MIDDLE SCHOOL TECHNOLOGY PROTOCOL GUIDELINES. My child has also read and understands the guidelines. Further questions will be directed to my child s teacher and or the administration at Benton Middle School.
