7 Quick-Start Guide for New s: Congratulations on your decision to turn more of your time into money. Sage Timeslips is specifically designed to help you track your billable activities, such as your time and expenses, and it includes a powerful and extensive set of features. This short guide will help you get Sage Timeslips set up quickly and refer you to specific sections of the User s Guide for more detailed instructions. Creating a New Database After installing Sage Timeslips, you can create a new database for your business. Click Create a new database to start the Create a New Database wizard. This wizard will ask you for information about your business to help create your database (Figure 2). Accessing the User s Guide On the installation CD, click View Documentation to open a menu of resources including the User s Guide on the CD. Preparing to Install Sage Timeslips Because installing Sage Timeslips can involve some important decisions, we suggest that only the system administrator install Sage Timeslips. Before installing Sage Timeslips, verify that your system meets the necessary hardware and software requirements. Please visit System Requirements earlier in this guide for a list. Finding the Serial Number and Configuration Code You will need your serial number and configuration code to install Sage Timeslips. You will also need your serial number to register Sage Timeslips and to receive technical support (if necessary). Your Sage Timeslips serial number and configuration code were ed to you shortly after purchase. If you cannot find your serial number and configuration code, please call our Warranty Support team at Installing Sage Timeslips When you insert the Sage Timeslips Installation CD, the installer starts automatically. The installer walks you through each step of the installation (Figure 1). Refer to Chapter 2 of the User s Guide, Installing Sage Timeslips, for detailed installation instructions. Figure 2 After the new database is created, you can open the General Settings dialog box, where you can enter important company information and financial settings. If you are unsure of any settings or need to change them later, you can select Setup then General to open the General Settings dialog box. Refer to Chapter 5 of the User s Guide, Creating a New Database, for more details. Establishing Additional Database Settings After creating a database, you may want to establish specific settings for your organization, such as system terminology, access security, and preferences. For example, the Terminology page of the General Settings dialog box controls the labels that Sage Timeslips uses to identify timekeepers, clients, activities, references, and projects. Although the User s Guide and online help use these standard terms, you may want to label them differently for your Quick-Start: New s Figure 1 6 7

8 organization. When you change a standard label, menus and dialog boxes throughout the program reflect the new label, making Sage Timeslips easier to learn (Figure 3). Refer to Establishing General Settings in Chapter 5 of the User s Guide for detailed instructions. Following the Quick-Start Tutorial For users who want a hands-on tutorial of Sage Timeslips, a quick-start tutorial (Figure 5) teaches you the basic data entry and reporting functionality in Sage Timeslips. Refer to Chapter 9 of the User s Guide. Figure 3 Establishing Your Personal Preferences Upon closing the General Settings dialog box, the Getting Started wizard opens (Figure 4). You can use this wizard to configure personal settings for the timekeeper using the program. Since your new database does not yet contain timekeeper names, this wizard prompts you to enter your name, initials, and nicknames. Sage Timeslips uses this information to create the first timekeeper record in the database. Figure 5 Using Navigators to Automate Sage Timeslips While you learn Sage Timeslips, use the navigators as your guides. The first navigator you see is the Office Manager navigator, which is designed to help your office manager with the billing cycle. Navigators are also available for other roles in your organization. To switch to another navigator, click Change Template in the bottom left corner. Refer to Using Navigators in Chapter 9 of the User s Guide for detailed instructions. For over 25 years, Sage Timeslips has been established not only as a leader in time and billing software, but also as the standard by which other time and billing products are measured. Note: This guide is specific to existing Sage Timeslips users who are upgrading to Sage Timeslips For additional information on upgrading other add-on products, please refer to the full Upgrader s Guide. You can access the full User s Guide or Upgrader s Guide from your installation CD or download, or contact the Sage Timeslips Service team at Accessing the User s Guide On the installation CD or the Install Screen if you downloaded Sage Timeslips, click View Documentation to open a menu of resources including the User s Guide (Figure 6). Figure 6 Preparing to Upgrade Sage Timeslips Because upgrading Sage Timeslips can involve some important decisions, we suggest that only the system administrator upgrade Sage Timeslips. Before upgrading Sage Timeslips, verify that your system meets the necessary hardware and software requirements. Please visit System Requirements earlier in this guide for a list. If you cannot find your serial number and configuration code, please call our Warranty Support team at Preparing Your Database Before upgrading your installation of Sage Timeslips, follow these procedures to prepare your Sage Timeslips data for conversion. 1. Make a Sage Timeslips Backup Before starting the installation procedure or following any other instructions in this section, we recommend upgraders create a backup of their Sage Timeslips database. When creating Sage Timeslips backups, use a unique name for backup files. For example, if today s date is December 1, 2020, you could name a backup file UPGRADE bku. If your organization uses multiple databases, back up each one before upgrading Sage Timeslips. Provide a unique name for each backup file. 2. Install the Latest Sage Timeslips Service Release Periodically Sage may provide updates for Sage Timeslips to address known issues. Before upgrading, we suggest you visit our website to verify you are using the latest Service Release. For example, if you are upgrading from Sage Timeslips 2012, verify that you are using the latest service release for Sage Timeslips Within your current version of Sage Timeslips, you can check for an update by selecting Help, then Sage Timeslips on the Web, and finally Download Latest Update. Sage Timeslips will open the web page where you can download any necessary service releases. Review any information that accompanies the Sage Timeslips service release for additional installation instructions. 3. Verify the Integrity of Your Sage Timeslips Data The Sage Timeslips data verification utilities, which are available in Timeslips v9 and later, allow you to check the structure and integrity of your Sage Timeslips database. In some cases, database errors might not display to Sage Timeslips users when data corruption is present. You can use these utilities to search for database errors before installing your Sage Timeslips upgrade. Select File then Data Verification to open the Data Verification dialog box in your current version to verify the integrity of your database. Mark only Look for errors and click OK to search for errors. If Sage Timeslips encounters Quick-Start: Upgrading s 10 11

10 any validation, linking, or integrity errors during the verification process, please contact the Billing Assurance Support team to evaluate and correct the errors before installing the latest version of Sage Timeslips (Figure 7). We do not suggest that you attempt to repair errors on your own. Figure 7 4. Purge Unnecessary Data The more data there is in your Sage Timeslips database, the longer the conversion process will take. Before installing your Sage Timeslips upgrade, you should purge unneeded data from your current version of Sage Timeslips. You can find additional information about purging data in the online Help of your current version. Please remember to always make a backup before purging data. Upgrading Sage Timeslips The following sections provide detailed upgrade installation instructions. You can install Sage Timeslips in many network environments. Our online knowledgebase includes detailed installation instructions for some of these specific network environments. Please visit our online knowledgebase at to see if there are installation instructions for your environment. 1. Start Windows. If any other applications are open, please close them now. You must log onto Windows with administrator rights to install Sage Timeslips. However, you do not need administrator rights to use Sage Timeslips. 2. Insert your Sage Timeslips Installation CD in your CD-ROM drive (Note: This step does not apply if you downloaded Sage Timeslips). If the Setup program does not start automatically, select Start, then Run, and enter D:\Setup.exe (where D: represents the appropriate CD-ROM drive letter), and click OK. 3. Once the Setup Window appears (either after downloading or inserting the CD in the CD-ROM Drive), click Install Sage Timeslips. The Welcome to Sage Timeslips Setup window opens. 4. Click Next to continue the installation procedure. The Software License Agreement view opens. 5. Installing Sage Timeslips indicates that you agree to the terms of the Software License Agreement. After reading this agreement, click I accept the terms of this license agreement if you agree to the terms; otherwise, click I do not accept the terms of this license agreement to exit the installation procedure. If you click I accept the terms of this license agreement, the Enter Configuration Code view opens. 6. Sage Timeslips requires a valid configuration code to install the appropriate features you purchased. This configuration code was ed to you shortly after purchasing Sage Timeslips. After entering this code, click Next. If you cannot find your configuration code, please call our Warranty Support team at Verify that the Sage Timeslips configuration settings correspond to the configuration code you entered. If the configuration settings are correct, click Next to open the Select the Destination Folder view. Otherwise, click Back to reenter your code. 8. Select the folder where you want to install the Sage Timeslips upgrade. You should install this newer version of Sage Timeslips over your previous version of Sage Timeslips. If you are upgrading a network installation, first install Sage Timeslips to the Sage Timeslips server. After completing the installation on the server, you can then install the upgrade on local workstations (see Installing Timeslips Locally located in the User s Guide in the documentation section on the Install Screen) (See Figure 6). All network users must have Change File rights (Read, Write, Execute, and Delete) for the installation folder in order to install or use Sage Timeslips. After selecting the appropriate drive and folder, click Next to continue. 9. Select the type of installation you want the Setup program to perform. We recommend you perform a complete installation. Performing a custom installation may omit some components. Click Next to continue. The User Information view opens

11 10. Enter your user name, company name, and Sage Timeslips serial number in the corresponding fields of the User Information view. Your Sage Timeslips serial number was ed to you shortly after purchase. After entering the appropriate information in the corresponding fields, click Next to continue. If you cannot find your serial number, please call our Warranty Support team at The Setup program is ready to install Sage Timeslips on your workstation or network drive. If you want to change any of the Setup program settings, click Back. Otherwise, click Next to begin installing Sage Timeslips. After copying the necessary program files to your computer, the Select Program Folder view opens. 12. The Setup program will install program shortcuts within a program folder on the Start menu. Select the program folder to use or enter a new program folder name and click Next to continue. 13. Complete the installation. After Sage Timeslips is installed, you can create a desktop shortcut, Install Adobe Reader, Review the Readme file, or Check for updated software. Mark the appropriate options and click Finish. Converting Your Sage Timeslips Data After completing the upgrade process as described in the previous section, you must convert your database before you can use it with Sage Timeslips The conversion process may take an extended period of time. If your database is very large, the conversion process can be over an hour. Note: The conversion process should never be interrupted. If for any reason the conversion process is stopped, you must restore from a previous backup and restart the conversion process. Please consider this when choosing a time to convert your database. Note: If you are converting your Sage Timeslips data from Timeslips v9 or a later version, see Converting Databases from Timeslips v9 and Later below. If you are converting from Timeslips v8 or earlier or from a SQL or MSDE format, we recommend you contact our Support Department for information on converting your database. Converting Databases from Timeslips v9 and Later After upgrading your Sage Timeslips installation, Sage Timeslips will convert your current database. If Sage Timeslips cannot locate your database, the Welcome to Sage Timeslips dialog box opens (See Figure 8). Figure 8 14 When you open a database created with Timeslips v9 through Sage Timeslips 2012, Sage Timeslips will automatically convert the database for use with Sage Timeslips You must back up your Sage Timeslips database before you can convert it. After converting the database to Sage Timeslips 2013 format, you cannot open it with previous versions of Sage Timeslips. Congratulations on a Successful Upgrade!
