5 2 Existing energy storage systems 2.1 Gas In the Province of Ravenna are present two underground natural gas storage sites: San Potito storage site; Cotignola storage site. Both storage sites are considered as one storage site called "San Potito and Cotignola Storage". It is located on the plain of the Romagna valley, precisely 10 km North-East of Faenza a municipality of the Ravenna Province. The Cotignola gas field was discovered in 1953 and then the production started in August of After several years, one to one the gas wells were closed except for well number 1, and well number 15. The former has been active since February 2003 and the latter ceased the production in February The San Potito gas field, located few kilometers north of the Cotignola s field, was discovered in 1984 and developed between 1986 and 1987 by the drilling of 7 wells, from two clusters named A and B. The extraction started in 1988 and ceased in January The Ministry of Productive Activities, after all wells have been closed, considered the possibility to convert those inactive fields, described above, in a storage natural gas sites. The area which had been covered by geophysical surveys, in order to verify the feasibility of converting San Potito gas field and Cotignola gas field in a storage sites, fell entirely within the territory of Ravenna province with the municipalities of Faenza, Lugo, Bagacavallo, Cotignola and marginally, S. Agata sul Santerno and Solarolo. Page 5

7 After the feasibility study, the area which had been considered suitable for the storage gas sites, consisted of the municipalities of Lugo, Bagnocavallo, Cotignola and Faenza (80 km2). The concession was granted by the Ministry of Economic Development, in consultation with the Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea in Page 7
