LHS C104, ext Course Description: Course Prerequisites: Examines current views on the interface between psychosocial processes and physical health, focusing on theory-based psychological research and the practice of health psychology. Topics include mind-body psychology, health behaviour change, stress and coping, adaptation to illness, patient-provider relationships, exercise and health promotion, chronic pain rehabilitation and research methods in health psychology. Prerequisite: 8.0 university credits including PSYC 2016H and 2017H (or 215) and 1.0 other 2000-level PSYC credit; OR 60% or higher in PSYC 1020H (102H) and 1030H (103H) or in PSYC 1010Y (101), NURS 2030H, 4.0 additional NURS credits, and co-registration in NURS 3030H. Excludes PSYC 343H, 353, 450. Course Format: Lecture and Seminar: Tuesday 11:00 to 13:50 in OCA 208 Link to Academic Timetable: Psyc 3750H on mylearningsystem (aka WebCT) This course has an accompanying mylearningsystem site that can be accessed at Links to internet resources will be provided on the site. I will be using the site to make announcements to the class. Be sure to check regularly for any for changes in lecture topics. You may sign up for chat rooms to discuss the course, materials and to help each other with exams and assignments. However, it will be expected that all submitted work will be the original individual work of the student (please refer to Academic Integrity Policy. Look at the Health Research Icon on the main WebCT page. Here you will find interesting research studies and commentaries on a range of health and health psychology topics. You can read this for education, fun (Health Psychology is fun and interesting!) or perhaps to help you with your assignments. Required Readings: Learning Outcomes Poole, G., Hunt-Matheson, D., & Cox, D. (2011). The psychology of health and health care. (4 th ed), Toronto, ON: Prentice Hall. American Psychological Association (2010). Publication manual of the American Psychological Association (6 th ed). Washington, DC: Author. Trent academic integrity website: Overarching Objective The successful student will be able to identify the role psychological factors play in physical health (mind-body psychology) and effective intervention and promotion strategies to improve health behaviours and health. The successful student will be able (with supervision) to evaluate a health program for its effectiveness. Specific Objectives
2 Upon completion of this course the successful student will be able to: 1. Distinguish between the common models of health and well-being, explaining their genesis, strengths and weaknesses; 2. Identify and critically evaluate major health behaviour change theories and use them to explain a range of health behaviours (including personal experience through a health behaviour change project); 3. Identify how psychological stress and other psychological factors impact biological function including how individuals cope and adapt to stressful situations; 4. Identify different patterns of patient-provider relations and explain how they impact on health outcomes and satisfaction with treatment interventions including application to clinical cases; 5. Identify motivational barriers to a healthy lifestyles and how health promotion programs can influence health behaviour in the population with specific reference to exercise, 6. Develop a program logic model of cause and effect and use it to evaluate a health program; 7. Identify how psychological factors influence pain and how individuals cope with pain including application to clinical rehabilitation. Withdrawal Deadline Students will have 35% of their grades by the final date for withdrawal without penalty - March Due Date Evaluation 1. Term test 1 (50 minutes) 10% February 4 2. Health behaviour change (HBC) project 15% February hrs literature review and plan 3. Term test 2 (50 minutes) 15% March Group research project and presentation 15% During seminars as per schedule 5. HBC final write up 10% April Weekly reading quizzes 15% Weekly, one hour prior to lecture. (Seven quizzes prior to drop deadline). 7. Final exam (2 hours) 20% Final exam period It is the responsibility of each student to read and accept the due dates outlined on the syllabus. Explanation of Assignments Health Behaviour Change Project Two Part Project If you want to understand something, try to change it. Kurt Lewin Self-responsibility for health is strongly advocated in our health care system and public health programs; however, health behaviours can be very resistant to change. This project will provide you with first hand experience in the modification of a health behaviour of your choice. Health behaviours are activities undertaken by individuals for the promotion, protection or maintenance of health. Relevant behaviours therefore include things like smoking, nutrition, exercise and alcohol activities to reduce/manage stress. This is a two-part assignment. A detailed guide for the assignment will be posted on the MyLearning system.
3 Course Policy on Late Submissions Course Policy on attendance in class/labs Note to students taking Psyc 3610 Behaviour Modification Students concurrently taking Behaviour Modification may use the same behaviour for this project and their Behaviour Modification project. In addition to the above work products, you will produce a write up comparing and contrasting the perspectives taken in the assignments in terms of how they differed and how they complimented each other. This will be submitted with your final write up for Health Psychology. Without it, your paper will not be marked. Seminar Presentation Health Program The ability to research health programs and communicate information obtained is important for academic and professional development in health psychology. In this group assignment (groups of three or four), you will research a community-based health program (e.g., Canadian Mental Health Association) delivering behaviourally oriented health services to participants in the community. You will identify the target population and the characteristics of the population, identifying the relevance of the program to community health. You will identify the program s objective and goals, and the strategies and program activities used to attain those goals. You will research the program s outcome evaluation and present data on the program s efficacy. You will identify dimensions of health psychology implicated in the program and identity areas of proficiency/deficiency in the program s capacity for the delivery of behaviourally-based health intervention. Your research will include direct contact with agency personnel. You will present this information to your colleagues during seminar using presentation software (you may include other media). Your will have 15 minutes to present your information and there will be five minutes for questions. You will provide handout information including relevant references and contacts relating to your research. You will provide a copy of the presentation to the instructor with research notes and a copy of the first page of any research articles referenced. Detailed requirements will be given in a handout for this assignment. Groups and presentation dates will be assigned. Term Tests and Final Exam: The term tests and final exam will focus on analysis, synthesis and integration of course material. Students will be expected to know the vocabulary of health psychology. Tests will include key terms, short answer, and case study questions. Matching and true and false questions may also be used. Tests and exams will focus on lecture and seminar material with integration of material from the text. The exams will be cumulative; with an emphasis will be placed on more recently covered material. Term test 1 will be 30 minutes, test 2 will be 50 minutes in duration, with the lecture occupying the remainder of the time. The final exam will be two hours. Weekly Reading Quizzes: Short quizzes will be posted on mylearningsystem, three (3) days prior to the lecture. You will have up to 1700 on the day of the lecture to complete the quiz. These quizzes will focus on information contained in the chapter readings for that week. You will have two opportunities to take the quiz and you will receive the highest mark obtained on those attempts as your mark. Each quiz will have equal weighting towards the 15% of the final mark. Your lowest quiz mark will be dropped in calculating your grade for the quizzes. Late assignments will NOT be accepted without valid documentation relating the delay to a serious medical or personal matter. A 10 percent deduction per work day will apply to late assignments without such documentation. Although though no grades will be allocated for attending, attendance will be recorded at all lectures.

Departmental Policy on Tests, Exams, and Assignments A. MIDTERMS & FINAL EXAMINATIONS Midterm examinations for half courses within the Psychology Department are scheduled by the instructor of the course. Midterm examinations for full courses and final examination for all courses are scheduled by the Registrar s Office. Students are strongly urged NOT to make any commitments (i.e., vacation, job related, or other travel plans) during either the term as a whole or the final examination period. Students are required to be available for all examinations during the periods for which they are scheduled (as published in course syllabi). B. DEFERRAL OF MIDTERM / FINAL EXAMINATIONS and/or TERM WORK Extensions of deadlines for completion of assignments or writing of midterms/final examinations may be granted to students on the basis of illness, accident, or other extreme and legitimate circumstances beyond their control. Consideration for deferrals will not normally be granted on the basis of vacation/travel plans or job-related obligations. C. SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION Students should expect that supporting documentation will be required and must be submitted before a deferral is approved. For illness or accident, supporting documentation will take the form of: (1) the Trent University Medical Certificate from Health Services: ( or (2) a certificate or letter from the attending physician clearly indicating the start and end dates of the illness and the student s inability to write an examination, complete assignments, and/or attend classes, as relevant to the particular request. For other circumstances, students should consult the individual Psychology faculty member about acceptable forms of documentation. Notes 1. Academic Integrity: For the purpose of interpreting and applying the University policy on academic dishonesty, the Department of Psychology has adopted the following: When a student submits a piece of written work in fulfillment of an assignment, he/she implicitly acknowledges the following: a) that she/he is the sole author of the work; b) that the wording and organization of the work, apart from acknowledged quotations, is her/his own; and c) that she/he has not and will not submit this work, either as a whole or in part, to satisfy another course requirement. These basic assumptions will be reasonably interpreted. They do not preclude collaboration between students upon a single project, by prior arrangement with the instructor, for shared academic credit (either for written or oral presentation). For an elaboration of the Department s policy on, and for specific examples of, plagiarism, students should consult p. 178 in the APA (2010) and the sections on academic honesty (pp. 6-8), and appropriate citing and referencing (pp , 169) in Mitchell et at. (2010) on reserve in the library. Students who have doubts about what might be considered academic dishonesty are urged to consult the instructor of the course. Ignorance of the University or Department policy does not excuse academic dishonesty. Submissions that fail to meet one or more of these considerations will be subject to procedures laid down in the policy on academic dishonesty as stated in the University calendar. 2. It is the policy of the Department NOT to accept faxed assignments. 3. The same assignment cannot be submitted in more than one course without the prior written permission of all instructors concerned. The written approval must be attached to the work when it is submitted. 4. Students are required to use American Psychological Association style (6 th edition). 5.
