Unfortunately, stress and pressure can steer employees to abusing alcohol and drugs. We have seen an increasing number of facilities in Alabama cited for Immediate Jeopardy for drug diversion. Preventing drug diversion starts with a comprehensive review of a facilities overall system and does not just involve individuals suspected of stealing or using drugs. During this seminar hear and learn about ways in which you can put better systems in place and what some facilities have fallen victim to as a result of a lack of proper protocols and procedures regarding medication. All nursing facilities are responsible according to State and Federal laws to be accountable for all used, unused, discontinued, and expired medications. Do your facility policies pass the test? About the Presenter: Kenny Williamson Keith is a member of Johnston Barton's Health Care Practice Group, one of the largest health care practices in the State of Alabama. She regularly advises and represents clients in all facets of health care law and litigation, with particular emphasis on compliance with federal and state regulatory requirements, state licensure issues, reimbursement disputes, medical malpractice defense and general business and contract advice. Kenny brings her personal nursing experience to the practice of law. Prior to joining Johnston Barton, she practiced as a Registered Nurse with extensive experience in hospital epidemiology, long-term and rehabilitative care as well as community health nursing. She served as Assistant Professor in the Nursing School of The University of Alabama at Birmingham and as a private consultant in epidemiology and community health. Kenny is also a clinical nurse specialist in infection control and has served as an officer of the Alabama League for Nursing and the Alabama Nurses Association. Kenny is a graduate of Samford University (B.S.N., 1981), the University of Alabama at Birmingham (M.S.N., 1984), and the Cumberland School of Law of Samford University (J.D. cum laude, 2003). Symposium Luncheon sponsored by: 1:00 PM 4:15 PM Educational Session: How Adult Protective Services Regulations Can Impact the Medicaid Eligibility Process In the Nursing Home During this session a discussion will be held regarding the regulations that guide a Department of Human Resources worker in assisting adults in need of protective services. Nursing Homes often help and have a need to know how to access the system to assist the residents mainly with financial exploitation issues and the ongoing financial decisions related to their welfare. In addition, we will have an attorney discuss how the Medicaid policies and regulations relate to the Protective Services policies and regulations. This program will conclude with case studies involving how to overcome the obstacles associated with the situation by working through the DHR and Medicaid policies. Any slips that are validated before that time will be docked for time not attended. The ANHA has to enforce this rule due to credentialing board regulations. Nurses will be required to swipe their license cards prior to entry of the seminar. You are required to bring your nurse license in order to receive CEUs.
