1 Mohawk Valley Community College MVCC MA115 Course description: This is a dual credit course. Successful completion of the course will give students 1 VVS Credit and 3 MVCC Credit. College credits do have the potential to transfer to other colleges across the country. To receive VVS credit students need to follow normal VVS class policy for taking classes. To receive MVCC credit requires some higher standards to be obtained. These standards are outline in this syllabus. Students have the options of receiving: 1.) Both VVS and MVCC credit 2.) Just VVS credit 3.) No credit from either institution. Course Focus: This course introduces intermediate algebra skills. Topics include exponents and radicals, polynomial and rational expressions, functions and relations and their graphs, inequalities, and systems of linear equations. Linear, quadratic, rational, and radical equations are solved. Applications are included. Note: A supplement with next step of life situations and expectations to aide in the transition from high school to college and adult life. Textbook: Intermediate Algebra, 11th edition, Lial, Hornsby and McGinnis, Addison-Wesley, (Optional)

2 Course requirements: Every unit will consist of notes, class work, homework assignments quizzes and unit quizzes. All back work needs to be turned before the unit quiz to be accepted for a grade. All work turned in after the unit quiz will not be graded. Homework assignments will be worth 2 points each. Quizzes will each be worth about 20 to 30 points. Attendance policy: Students are allowed six absences for a semester. The seventh absence will result in the student s MVCC grade to be reduced by one letter grade. Every multiple of three (9 th, 12 th, 15 th ) thereafter will result in another letter reduction. Students have the ability to make up any and all missed classes, to remain under the seventh absence. Policy on academic integrity: Students caught cheating/copying will receive zeros for the assignment/quiz and will have their overall grade reduced by one letter grade for each instance. Grading: Plus and minus grades are not used at Mohawk Valley Community College. A Excellent 4 B Good 3 C Satisfactory 2 D Poor 1 F Failure To receive MVCC credit for MA115: First find the overall course grade by finding the average of Marking period #3, marking period #4 and the final. Apply the average to the grade scale to find the course letter grade. Apply any grade reductions. The letter grade must be least a C to receive MVCC credit. To receive VVS credit: Normal VVS class procedures apply. Special accommodations that might be made for students with disabilities: Normal VVS procedure.
