1 Business Support Technical Grade 7 Role Definition Roles at this level will typically be team managers/leaders with responsibility for a range of technical services, including the development of the technical team, within their department/area. They will be required to introduce new scientific and technical methods to enhance service provision. The primary purpose will be to lead and manage the established work of the team(s) to provide ongoing technical support to established teaching and/or research activity within their department/area. The work may involve responding to changing priorities and differing situations. They will be expected to conduct analysis and identify practical options to resolve issues and problems with short to medium term consequences; and will be required to put forward recommendations to management on more complex situations. Role holders will be required to liaise and network within the wider University community and externally to support the work activities of their department/area. The following is not a job description but rather is intended to provide a representative description of the work activities typically required of a role at this level. Representative Work Activities To plan and manage the provision of technical services for their department/area to maximise service quality, efficiency and continuity. Responsibility for the day-to-day line management of all technicians working within their department/area. To establish and manage the technical service provision across disciplines in order to ensure the best and most flexible deployment of technical tasks and responsibilities. This will involve the deployment of project management practices to deliver facilities and services on time and within agreed constraints. To propose and develop systems, protocols and procedures and develop internal controls to meet the requirements of the University. Responsibility for the day-to-day Health and Safety issues within their department/area i.e. PAT, Risk Assessment, COSHH, Fire Regulations and other Health and Safety related issues ensuring their department/area is meeting the legal requirements. To report to their department/area Executive Committee in regard to Health and Safety issues. Responsibility for the integrity of all software licensing arrangements, maintenance of their department/area software licensing arrangements, maintenance of their department/area software map and to liaise with ISD in relation to software audits and related matters, including IT system recovery and security protocols. Responsibility for the maintenance of their department/area Fixed Asset Register (FAR) and ensuring the FAR database is updated for Schools and Research Institutes, etc across their department/area. To ensure the provision of staff and facilities in support of special events organised by their department/area or its Schools and Research Institutes.

2 To identify and advise the Dean/Head of Department/Head of School of the changing needs in technical support, the physical environment and specialised plant and equipment for teaching and research. To liaise with appropriate technical, physical resources and other agencies in order to advise the Dean/Head of Department/Head of School on the most appropriate infrastructure layout for all Physical Resource facilities and on provision and installation of specialised plant, equipment and IT facilities as required in their department/area. To liaise with Central Administrative Departments (e.g. Physical Resources, Human Resources, ISD, Staff Development, Finance etc) and other Faculties as appropriate, to ensure that their department/area requirements are incorporated in forward plans and that agreed Central Policy is effectively disseminated and implemented within their department/area and to liaise with external agencies as appropriate to assist the University to meet its legal requirements. To assist the Dean/Head of Department/Head of School and Head of Faculty Administration with financial planning on the deployment of budget allocations relevant to technical services/resources within their department/area, including maintaining records of expenditure; taking responsibility for an overview of all relevant purchase orders, reporting on expenditure versus budget and advising on appropriate action; and where possible to create income generation opportunities within their department/area which make effective use of the technical resource. To hold regular team meetings to develop action lists which will form the basis of reports as appropriate to their department/area. To participate in the selection and appointment of technical staff reporting to him/her. To implement Human Resource policies including grievance, discipline and attendance management. To take responsibility for the identification of training and development needs of technicians working within their department/area. To undertake appropriate staff development to ensure knowledge and experience is developed and updated to meet the requirements of the role. Competencies/Skills within the 14 HERA Elements 1. Communications The Role holder will be required to communicate effectively on a daily basis in order to convey information to facilitate others understanding. This communication includes both oral and written form. Examples include: Persuading colleagues to adopt a view point; Presenting a paper/report at a meeting Explaining the operational implication of a report or a decision; Explaining procedures or regulations, Writing of factual reports

Teamwork and Motivation The Role holder manages the technical cohort and is responsible for the provision of technical services to Schools/Research Institutes within a Faculty; it will include helping to clarify priorities and ensuring they are understood by all team members thereby supporting and encouraging colleagues who may need extra help. 3. Liaising and Networking Required to work across team boundaries, i.e. internally and externally, to ensure that Faculty/School/Research Institute issues are appropriately represented and reported; to build and strengthen working relationships; share information and contribute to collaborative initiatives, projects or events as a requirement of the role. Required to maintain external links with professional and/or specialist bodies or groups. 4. Service Delivery Required to ensure technical and quality service standards are maintained and applied within own area of activity. Required to contribute to the development of technical service standards for the faculty, e.g. by identifying additional service requirements or service shortfalls; collates findings to inform service developments required to maximise service quality, efficiency and continuity. 5. Decision Making Processes and Outcomes Required to work with others to explore and ensure all options are considered on systems or processes which have a moderate impact within the University and provide specialist/technical advice and recommendations to support management in making informed decisions on operational matters. 6. Planning and Organising Resources Required to ensure that time, resources and budgets within Faculty/School or Research Institute are used effectively to ensure maximum value is delivered from resources deployed on a short to medium term basis to support the achievement of annual objectives within the Faculty; includes developing and determining appropriate team or individual work flow and activity scheduling in order to meet laid down objectives.

4 7. Initiative and Problem Solving 8. Analysis and Research Required to analyse problems within own discrete/defined technical area to identify their cause, investigate the matter to obtain evidence to support intuition/rationale, to take corrective actions to prevent recurrence of the problem; and to consider possible solutions identifying those which offer wider benefits. Required to contribute to the initiation of processes and procedures to resolve problems within technical area, includes the identification of potential income generation opportunities for the Faculty to make effective use of the technical resource. Required to identify and use a range of sources and types of data to produce reports that combine these different types of data in order to meet both internal and external requirements. 9. Sensory and Physical Demands 10. Work Environment Required to use tools, equipment and materials generally found in their area of work and to develop abilities and find ways of improving working practices. Have due regard to statutory processes and procedures and recognising common hazards and risks and as appropriate ensuring safe practices and use of protective clothing/equipment are part of the normal day to day working within their area of activity. 11. Pastoral Care and Welfare 12. Team Development Required to have the capacity to deal with difficult situations relating to confidential matters according to institutional policy and procedures and to recognise when to involve others. Required to support the development of team members to ensure that individual contributions are maximised; this includes carrying out the Development Appraisal Review for staff managed by the Role holder. 13. Teaching and Learning Support May be required to organise and deliver training sessions in their area of expertise.

Knowledge and Experience To take up a post at this level, the following is required: A foundation degree, or degree or NVQ4, or equivalent Demonstrable management ability in an appropriate technical capacity in a similar work environment. An ability to apply and share knowledge and experience with others including the ability to interpret procedures and advise others on their application. To engage in updating knowledge and training activities. The skills and competencies within this profile are generic; they are representative of the requirements at this level.
