2 About Heather Heather L. Carpenter, PhD, is an experienced and highly networked nonprofit manager, researcher, trainer, and blogger. She is assistant professor in the School of Public, Nonprofit, and Health Administration at Grand Valley State University. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in nonprofit management, financial management, fund development, nonprofit technology, leadership, and human resources management as well as she speaks across the United States about talent and leadership development in the nonprofit and philanthropic sector. Heather is co-author (with Tera Qualls) of the Talent Development Platform: Putting People First in Social Change Organizations (Jossey-Bass, 2015). In 2012, she was awarded the prestigious Russell G. Mawby Faculty Fellowship in Philanthropic Studies at Grand Valley State University. In 2014, she was awarded the Michigan Campus Compact faculty service award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to community service-learning and civic engagement. Before earning her PhD, Heather served as nonprofit manager for ten years, as well as co-founded the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network in San Diego (with Emily Davis). She has served as an advisory board member to Independent Sector s NGen program, the Nonprofit Workforce Coalition, and the Next Generation Leadership Forum. She earned her bachelor s degree in business administration from San Diego State University with a certificate in nonprofit management from the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, her master s in nonprofit administration from North Park University, and her PhD in leadership with a specialization in nonprofit leadership and management from the University of San Diego. Heather is also a pilot s wife, mother to a rambunctious preschooler, and mentors many emerging leaders about work/life integration.
3 About The Talent Development Platform The Talent Development Platform is about results driven talent development for social change. Written by seasoned nonprofit experts, this book provides a holistic process for creating an in-house training and talent development program. Social change organizations make the most of limited resources, but often overlook developing the talent they already have. This book gives readers a plan for finding and nurturing their internal talent to reduce turnover and improve organizational efficiency. More specifically the book helps organizations: Develop organizational, department, and position specific competencies. Create and revise job descriptions. 8 Leadership and Social Media Topics The Future of Nonprofit and Philanthropic Leadership This workshop will discuss the forces that influence the future of nonprofit and philanthropic leadership as well as effective strategies for working across generations including: creating and maintaining a talent development system, embracing intercultural competency, and working across the digital divide. You will leave the workshop with completed assessments and a plan of action for: Utilizing your leadership style in everyday interactions; Improving how you work with your superiors, colleagues, and supervisees; Utilizing leadership theories that directly relate to your work; Understanding your intercultural competency framework, and; Strategies to manage the digital divide. Using Social Media Effectively To Create and Maintain a Culture of Philanthropy This workshop provides you with the social media tools and strategies to create and maintain a culture of philanthropy. By the end of this workshop you will be able to: Assess an organizations culture and capacity for social media and identify areas for social media improvement; Budget and plan for those improvements; Make the right social media selection decisions, and; Assess the effectiveness of an organization s social media fundraising efforts. 9 Career Development Topics Put Your People First: My Story Take Charge of Your Career Development In this session I will discuss how to handle life events and deal with family crises. I ll share my personal experiences as a member of the sandwich generation and the daily strategies I take to effectively balance integrate being a working mother, pilot s wife, and daughter of aging parents. By the end of this workshop, you ll leave with resources, strategies, and tools to: This workshop provides you practical resources and steps you can take to improve job satisfaction and accelerate your career. Heather will use resources in The Talent Development Platform: Putting People First in Social Change Organizations, to help you assess your own professional development learning needs, learning goals, and learning styles. By the end of the workshop, you will have identified: Plan for work/life integration; On the job exercises to increase job satisfaction; Put your family and yourself first; Mentoring resources to accelerate your career, Become a better spouse, partner, friend, and; colleague, and boss; Job descriptions that fit your learning needs, Advocate for your well being within your job learning goals, and learning styles. and your family life, and; Handle family life-events.
10 Heather s Speaking Fees 1 Hour Webinar or Workshop = $200 3 Hour Workshop = $500 Full Day Workshop = $1,000 Payment Policy: A deposit of 10% of the speaking fee holds the date when you book an engagement. Your event will not be confirmed until the deposit has been paid. The deposit payment may be made via check or credit card. The balance is due on the day of the program. Travel Expense Policy: In addition to Heather s speaking fee, reasonable travel expenses are charged to your organization. These expenses may include round-trip airfare, lodging, ground transportation, parking and/or meals. Travel arrangements can be made directly by your organization (typically the more economical option) or Heather may be reimbursed for these expenses following the engagement. Discounted Books and Resources: You may wish to provide additional resources to your attendees to help them stay inspired long after the event is over. Copies of Heather s book is available at a volume discount if you purchase them in advance for your attendees. As part of her speaking engagement, Heather will also agree to a book signing (at no additional charge) for your attendees following their presentation.
