23 I ENJOYED THE HANDS-ON PART OF MY ENGINEERING STUDIES. ENGINEERING COURSES AT FLINDERS HAVE A REALLY GOOD BALANCE BETWEEN THE THEORETICAL SIDE AND ITS APPLICATION. THAT BETTER PREPARES YOU FOR THE REAL WORLD. I ve got a specialist role as a safety engineer making sure safety has been considered in designs and all hazards have been mitigated. In the past nine years, I have found myself sequestered on remote islands in the Torres Strait implementing radar solutions while working with both deployable and fixed air traffic control systems. I have come a long way from my time at Flinders. As a senior engineer, I now find myself in a leadership role, managing and mentoring young engineers. That s where I ll draw from the other skills I picked up at Flinders how to learn. At Uni they teach the curriculum but they also show you how to pick up new concepts and how to apply that to other fields. I ve seen how projects work and what to do when things don t always go right. That s when the uni lessons come in you need to use your mind to solve a lot of problems. 19

STUDY PROGRAM FIRST YEAR Most Flinders engineering degrees have a common first year meaning students in civil, computer and network systems, electrical, electronics, mechanical, naval architecture and robotics engineering complete the same core subjects. This makes it possible for you to transfer between degrees at the end of first year with no loss of time. First year comprises topics in fundamental science and engineering including engineering design, mechanics, electronics, materials, computer programming, mathematics, physics and professional skills. SECOND AND THIRD YEARS The second and third years focus on core mechanical engineering studies including dynamics, mechanics and structures, mechanics of machines, thermodynamics and energy systems, solid mechanics, control systems, project management, and fluid mechanics. You will also complete a mechanical engineering certificate and undertake Flinders University s nationally recognised 20-week industry placement. In second year, you will be required to design and build a device/vehicle to compete in the Annual Warman Design and Build Competition. Students who perform well in the topic and at the campus heats have the chance to then compete in the national competition held in Sydney. At the national competition, Flinders University has experienced a number of successes, including coming first place in 2012 and winning design awards in 2011 and The national competition provides an opportunity to network with industry and peers from across the country. FOURTH YEAR Fourth year includes a major mechanical engineering honours thesis researching a topic of your interest in depth. ACCREDITATION This program is fully accredited by Engineers Australia at the level of professional engineer. Professional engineering courses accredited by Engineers Australia are recognised internationally under the Washington Accord. Graduates meet the academic requirements for attaining chartered professional engineering status. COMBINED DEGREES You can combine the Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) (Honours) with any other bachelor degree within the Faculty of Science and Engineering, subject to meeting entry requirements. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Some potential occupations for graduates include graduate mechanical engineer, graduate project engineer (mechanical), associate technical professional, mechanical design engineer, graduate production engineer, and graduate process engineer. Potential employers include BAE Systems, Airservices Australia, Halliburton, Sedgman, Transpacific Industries, Carbon Revolution, and SA Water.
