2 Chief Executive s Report F & I AGM Lynn attended the Fellows & Instructors AGM and dinner at the beginning of January. As always this was a great opportunity for Lynn to update the F&I s on the work of the Society and for the Society to support the activity of the F & I Association. Board Meeting The first Board meeting of the year took place on 31 January. UAE Upon direction from the Board, Lynn visited our centres in the UAE and also other centres within the UAE which are interested in becoming BHS Approved. It was a very positive visit and Lynn gained greater understanding of the equine industry within the UAE. Badminton Lynn had a number of meetings with regards to the Society s presence as Charity of the Year at Badminton. The Society is working hard to ensure it makes the most of the incredibly generous opportunities that Badminton is providing and create a vital engaging presence to attract new members. NEF Committee Meeting Lynn attended the NEF Organising Committee meeting with discussion focussing on the final preparations for this year s Forum taking place on Thursday 8 March. The BHS have been given a slot at this year s Forum and Alan Hiscox will be presenting on our Safety work. Lynn together with Jeanette Allen, Chief Executive of The HorseTrust will also be presenting a slot on the merging of the BHIC and ESC Steering Group. Transport Focus has looked into understanding how their needs, as well as drivers, can be better met in future road designs. Since 2015 Transport Focus has represented all users of England s motorways and major A roads, including cyclists, pedestrians and equestrians. New road schemes or major upgrades should incorporate crossings for cyclists, pedestrians and equestrians, as well as segregated paths with minimal diversion from the intended route. It is encouraging to see the needs of equestrians being recognised in this document. 11 January MW- Rights of Way Stakeholder Working Group it is still hoped that the necessary regulations will be able to be laid before Parliament later this year so that the rights of way provisions of the deregulation act can be brought into force. 15 January MW- visited Scotland to see the great access work being done by BHS Scotland, the first site visit was to Eglinton Country Park to see and discuss the equestrian access issues there with National Manager Scotland Helene Mauchlen, Don Milton Chair of our Access Committee in Scotland, Regional Manager Scotland Julie Hanna, Access Reps Sonya Perry and Elaine Honeyman and Vyv Wood Gee equine access consultant. 16 January MW Defra National Common Land Stakeholder Group 26 January - MW met with the Ramblers and Cycling UK to discuss post Brexit access opportunities. 29 January - MW,HC & RF - Jack Cornish of the Ramblers visited HQ to discuss the coordination of 2026 research. 2. Volunteers Emma Thompson The Volunteer Manager is compiling the reports for our National/Regional Chairmen s meeting at HQ on February 27 th. This meeting is a great opportunity for our volunteers to share their thoughts and ideas. We get feedback through the Chairmen from individuals, committees and Chairmen at County and Regional levels. It is also a great opportunity for our CEO and Chairman of the Board of Trustees along with Directors at HQ to update the committee on new developments, campaigns and help relieve challenges they might be facing. These communications are then shared by the Chairmen to the Nations, Regions and Counties. Top of the list this time are questions about our Platinum year with many volunteer committees coming up with some great ideas and events to raise awareness of the BHS, celebrate our 70 years and hopefully engage some new members. Ride Out UK Month is already on the horizon, a massive success in 2017 with 62 events Nationwide and over 1100 people taking part, we hope it will be even bigger this year. Our National Trust partners have already signed up and our committees have already got Pleasure Rides and other events planned for the month. Our Volunteer Resources Page continues to be accessed by volunteers to support their activities. Home to all the documents supporting the Volunteer Programme this page now holds our new Volunteer Handbook and Policy along with help for volunteers in each of our roles. There are also copies of our previous Volunteer Newsletters packed with information and ideas from committees around the UK. Our BHS Volunteers are just beginning their very active season, planning is going on to decide what they will focus on in 2018, how they will raise funds to support their plans and their local equestrians, thinking about what kind of events will help them raise awareness of BHS work and campaigns whilst also supporting their equestrian community. Our BHS committees consistently raise and spend 300,000 each year supporting the BHS. This money is spent on all sorts of things: from bursaries to enable training for those embarking on a career in the equestrian industry to vet talks to increase the knowledge of horse owners; from pleasure rides so their community can connect and ride out safely together to Riders Rights and Responsibilities nights so their community knows how to keep themselves and their horses safe and within the law; from supporting volunteers carrying out Access work that has replaced gates, opened routes, extended routes, supported the creation of Pegasus crossings and kept your routes safe and accessible to supporting Welfare volunteers who visit, support and advise horse owners, increasing the health of horses and knowledge of horse owners across the UK. Our volunteers are active in all areas of the equestrian world and work hard to make a difference locally. 10

11 10. Welfare Gemma Stanford Welfare Team Restructure Exciting times - BHS Welfare is growing. The department is being restructured and will now have two work streams Welfare Education and Welfare Operations. The education team will focus on the faster paced development of our educational initiatives, conferences and educational materials. The operations team will focus on supporting our Welfare Officers, development of the welfare helpline, receipt of welfare concerns and running of our passport function. We are currently recruiting for two manager positions to lead the teams. Meetings Attended Gemma Stanford attended the Westminster Briefing: Future of Animal Welfare. This was a key briefing in light of Brexit being imminent. It is very clear that there are going to be more changes to animal welfare legislation over the next two years than there has been in the past 60 years. The most recent consultation Gemma has responded to was regarding animal sentience and sentencing for animal welfare offences. Emmeline Hannelly attended the Saddle Fitting Working Group where lots of ideas for the future were discussed. Emmeline also attended the Q&T meeting and continue to assist Education with their work. Emmeline is now a regular attendee of these meetings. Welfare Education Round-up The article for Rider magazine on Travelling horses and the potential effects on competition performance has been used to produce a BRC Data Fact Sheet. Due to the number of enquiries the BHS was receiving about colic and the number of veterinary practices raising concerns of the number of colic cases, especially in Scotland, the Welfare team put out an awareness statement. This was published on our website, a carousel banner was produced for the homepage of the website and Facebook. A feature was also included in the main E-news. Horse & Hound picked up the story which was promoted via their Facebook page and website. As a result, the Welfare team received over 50 requests for REACT packs. Herd versus individual turnout information sent to Horse & Hound. The journalist used a section in their article which received a positive response. Field Officer Update Dawn attended the East Sussex, South and East Kent, North and West Kent and Essex Committee meetings in January. She has been liaising with other organisations about some tricky welfare concerns, one of which involved a horse with an embedded headcollar. The RSPCA called a vet who confirmed that it was suffering so the police took it in to possession under section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act and is now in the care of the RSPCA. Fortunately an owner has been traced so this is likely to result in this person being issued with summonses to appear in court. Dawn attended Chichester College to give a presentation to 30 students on welfare and general information about the BHS. They have asked if we can give more presentations in the future.
