2 COMMITMENT WITH PRID Message from the Director of Athletics Dear Student-Athlete: This handbook serves as your guide and a reminder of the obligations that come with being an EAGLE student-athlete. It is privilege that bears with its many existing opportunities and experience but also great responsibilities. The handbook provides specific information related to the athletics program and its policies and procedures at The College of Saint Elizabeth. General policies and other information for students can be found in the Undergraduate Catalog and Student Handbook. With the expectations and policies outlined throughout the handbook we ask you to act and behave like a good person. A good person committed to your academic pursuits and your athletic pursuits. A good person who fully understands that being part of an athletic team/department means YOU represent all of us. We will do everything possible to help make your journey with us a successful and rewarding one, but the real work is up to you. The goal of our athletics program is to provide you with an educationally-sound and athleticallycompetitive experience. This handbook should establish helpful parameters for your participation as an Eagle student-athlete. 3 Introduction Every student who participates in intercollegiate athletics becomes a member of a team chosen to represent the College of Saint Elizabeth. By so doing, a student-athlete assumes special obligations and responsibilities for meeting requirements set forth by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC), the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC), and the College of Saint Elizabeth (CSE). In order to maintain that membership, student-athletes are expected to demonstrate good sportsmanship, honesty, integrity, respect for others, as well as abide by College policies, team rules, and state and federal law. The athletic department believes it is a privilege for the student-athlete to represent CSE on the field/court of play and expects behavior both on and off the field/court to be exemplary. Studentathletes are among the most visible students on campus as well as in the community. Because of America s fascinations with sports, and those who play a unique platform exists to be a role model, mentor or spokesperson. The College, the athletic program, and the student- athlete all benefit from this exposure. However, the department also views members of the College s athletic teams as studentathletes. The student-athlete s main purpose at CSE is to obtain an academic degree. The coaches and administration expect that each athlete will attend all classes and execute all assignments unless an illness or emergency arises. Further, student-athletes are expected to consult with instructors on an individual basis about academic problems and should avail themselves of the services provide by the Academic Learning Center located in Mahoney Library. A student-athlete is a responsible adult; therefore, all choices and decisions regarding personal/ academic life reside with the student-athlete. Behavior appropriate of those viewed as responsible role models is expected. Behavior which discredits the student-athlete or the institution she represents cannot and will not be tolerated.

4 Mission and Values of the College of Saint Elizabeth The mission of the College of Saint Elizabeth, sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, is to be a community of learning in the Catholic liberal arts tradition for students of diverse ages, backgrounds, and cultures. Characterized by a strong Catholic identity and values, the College is committed to: Scholarship and critical inquiry Just and ethical relationships Promotion of women as full partners in society in all its programs, including those which enroll both women and men Quality teaching Development of leadership in the spirit of service and social responsibility to others Promotion of a caring personal environment Learning through example and participation throughout the learning experience Through the vision and values of Elizabeth Ann Seton, Vincent de Paul, and Louise de Merillac and rooted in Gospel values and in Catholic Social Teaching, the College of Saint Elizabeth affirms its solidarity with the poor and its commitment in service to the community. 5 Mission for the College of Saint Elizabeth Athletic Department Along with all the other facets of the academic curriculum and extra-curricular programs at the College of Saint Elizabeth, the intercollegiate athletic program is educational in nature and well suited to co-exist with the missions and values statement. Of particular relevance to the Department of the Athletics: With quality teaching as a primary activity and the development of leadership in a spirit of service and social responsibility for others, the College promotes a caring, personal environment where students learn by example as well as participation throughout their educational experience. With this in mind athletics plays a vital role in the overall education and general character development of all the students on campus and the campus environment. The student-athletes of the College of Saint Elizabeth participate in intercollegiate athletic programs for a variety of reasons. None of these reasons include financial aid or awards or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. The student-athletes at the College of Saint Elizabeth continue to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of the competition and the fulfillment of the countless intrinsic values they achieve through their personal commitment to their institution, their team, their teammates and their personal growth. This will be accomplished through activities and programs that: 1. Encourages participation in athletics 2. Attract and retain a diverse group of student-athletes 3. Attract and retain a skilled group of student-athletes 4. Encourages the development of team players 5. Encourages the development of individuals 6. Encourages excellence in the classroom 7. Keeps true to the Mission Statement of the College

6 Student-Athlete Code of Conduct The following rules apply to all student-athletes: Students are responsible for arranging their work schedules at home which do not interfere with game and practice schedules. Student-athletes are expected to attend all of their classes. Missing class to attend practice is a violation of NCAA regulations. Possession and/or use of a controlled substance may be deemed sufficient cause for immediate dismissal from any team. Regardless of age, the purchase and /or consumption of alcoholic beverages by student-athletes or student employees on any road trip, or while representing CSE is strictly forbidden and will result in disciplinary action (refer to the CSE alcohol and drug policy, etc.). When traveling, the coach has the privilege of specifying a reasonable time for all the members of the traveling party to be in their assigned rooms. Student-athletes are representing CSE and at all time they should be respectful of their teammates and other guests and travelers around them. Participation in any gambling activity that involves intercollegiate athletics or professional athletics is a violation of NCAA regulation (refer to gambling policy). All team members and coaches are expected to display acceptable behavior on and off the playing field/court. Fighting, verbal abuses, taunting, foul language, and hazing activities are unacceptable behaviors (refer to hazing). Attendance at practice must take procedure over attendance at non-athletic extracurricular meetings and events. Exceptions are at the discretion of the coach. Cooperation and participation in game ceremonies, and team and athletics departmentsponsored activities are expected of each student-athlete. Student-athletes must participate in practices and games. Illness, injury or special needs must be communicated to and approved by the coach and/or athletic trainer.

7 Student-Athlete Academic Policies All student-athletes MUST meet the following requirements to be considered academically eligible for participation in varsity athletics: You must be a fulltime student with 24 credit hours per year minimum. (If at any time you drop below the fulltime status, you will be deemed ineligible.) You must pass a minimum of 9 hours each semester while also making academic progress. (See chart) You must meet the requirements for normal progress towards graduation. Each case is evaluated individually by the Faculty Athletic Rep., Director of Athletics and the CSE/NCAA Compliance officer. A student-athlete shall represent the College in intercollegiate athletic contests only if the student has acquired the designated number of credits at the beginning of each semester as follows: At the beginning of semester Minimum credits passed GPA A student-athlete is eligible to represent the College in intercollegiate athletic contests only if the student meets the minimum cumulative grade point requirements at the beginning of the appropriate semester and meets all requirements in their academic program. Academic progress for student-athletes will be the same as all CSE students.

8 Academic Success Center: All freshmen, incoming transfer student-athletes, and continuing studentathletes (with an 2.9 GPA or less) will be required to complete the following Attend 4 hours of study hall weekly Complete an athletic academic form weekly Meet with the Director of Athletics each Monday in the semester Meet with the head coach once a week Academic Warning: Upon receiving notification of academic warning for the college the student-athlete will complete the following: Attend 6 hours of study hall weekly Complete an athletic academic form weekly Meet with the Director of Athletics each Monday in the semester Meet with the head coach once a week While on academic warning the student-athlete may continue to practice and compete. If the individual does not follow requirements as stated they will be placed on academic probation. Academic Probation: Upon receiving notification of academic probation for the college the studentathlete will complete the following: Attend 8 hours of study hall weekly Complete an athletic academic form weekly Meet with the Director of Athletics once a week Meet with the head coach once a week While on academic warning the student-athlete may continue to practice and compete. Academic Dismissal: Upon receiving notification of academic dismissal from the College the studentathlete will be dismissed from the team Missed Class Policy Student-athletes representing the college in intercollegiate sports competition may be excused from class, at the discretion of the instructor, due to participation in scheduled contests or due to travel related to a scheduled contest. Each student-athlete must present a Notice of Class Absence Due to Competition form to the appropriate faculty member at the beginning of each semester or sports season. The student-athletes are responsible for all material and announcements covered during her absence and should be fully aware that she is a student first and athlete second while enrolled at CSE.

Absentee Policy for Student-Athletes Each student-athlete must present a Notice of Class Absence Due to Competition form to the appropriate faculty member at the beginning of each semester of their sports seasons. Student-athletes representing the college in intercollegiate sports competition may be excused at the discretion of the instructor from required course activities due to participation in scheduled contests or due to travel related to a scheduled contest. 10 Eligibility To be eligible for regular-season competition and NCAA championships, the student-athlete shall meet all applicable NCAA and Division III eligibility requirements. Ineligibility for Use of Banned Drugs: A student-athlete who is found to have used a banned drug shall be found ineligible for further participation in postseason and regular-season completion. (Please see NCAA Banned Drug List) Validity of Academic Credentials: Before participation in intercollegiate competition each academic year, a student-athlete shall sign a statement in a for prescribed by the Management Council in which the student athlete submits information related to eligibility, recruitment, financial aid, amateur status, previous positive drug tests by any other athletes organization and involvement in organized gambling activities related to intercollegiate and professional athletics competition under the Association s governing legislation. Failure to complete and sign the statement shall result in the student-athlete s ineligibility for participation in all intercollegiate completion. Eligibility Form: The eligibility for an international student-athlete shall be certified on a form approved the Management Council and must be completed prior to practice or competition. The completed form shall be maintained on file at the institution with other eligibility documents and shall be available for examination upon request by the NCAA staff, and, if the institution is a member of conference, an authorized conference representative. Admission: A student-athlete shall not represent an institution in intercollegiate athletics competition, unless the student has been admitted as a regularly enrolled, degree-seeking student in accordance with the regular, published entrance requirements of that institution. Drop/Add Course: A student athlete no longer should be considered in a minimum full-time program (12-credit hours) of studies after dropping a course that places the student below full-time status) when the dropped course becomes official in accordance with procedures determined by the institution for all students. A student who is adding a course to reach fulltime status shall become eligible for practice and competition once the course has been approved by the department head (or designated representative) and submitted in the registrar. *Make sure you add a course before you drop a course! Withdrawal or Dismissal: A student-athlete who withdraws or is dismissed form an institution is considered to be a prospective student-athlete eligible for recruitment by other NCAA member institutions and may not continue to practice with the original institution s team. Requirements for Competition: To be eligible for competition, a student-athlete shall be enrolled in a least minimum full-time program of studies leading to a baccalaureate or equivalent degree as defined by the institution, which shall not be less than 12 semester or quarter hours.

11 Graduate Student/Post baccalaureate Participation: You may participate in intercollegiate athletics when one of the following applies: The student-athlete who is enrolled in a graduate or professional school of the institution she previously attended as an undergraduate The student-athlete is enrolled and seeking a second baccalaureate or equivalent degree at the same institution The student-athlete who has graduated and is continuing as a full-time student at the same institution while taking course work that would lead to the equivalent of another major or degree as defined and documented by the institution All of the above are dependent upon the student having remaining eligibility and that such participation occurs within the applicable 10-semester/15quarter period. Ten Semester/ Fifteen-Quarter Rule: A student athlete shall complete her seasons of participation during the first 10 semesters or 15 quarter s in which the student is enrolled in a collegiate institution in at least a minimum full-time program of studies, as determined by the regulation of that institution. For an institution that conducts registration other than on a traditional semester or quarter basis, the Management Council shall determine an equivalent enrollment period. Self Release Form: Prior to contacting other colleges or coaches about transferring, it is required that you fill out a self-release form which is located on the NCAA website at

12 Alcohol, Drug, and Tobacco Policy Alcohol/Drugs CSE and the Department of Athletics recognize that there is an obligation on the part of the studentathlete to maintain a high standard of behavior in terms of alcohol and substance abuse. Studentathletes should understand that they will be held accountable for inappropriate behavior while under the influence of alcohol or for the use of any illegal drug. Nutritional Supplements Many health food and vitamin stores sell supplements which claim to enhance athletic performance. These stores will tell you that these supplements are legal and all natural. Often, these supplements are not cleared by the Food and Drug Administration. This means that many of the compounds are not represented accurately on the list of ingredients and may contain impurities or banned substances. Please be advised that some of these supplements are banned by the NCAA and will result in a positive drug test, causing you to lose your eligibility. Most supplements are expensive and provide little, if any, benefit. Some supplements are harmful if not taken in the correct manner. Please check with the training room, prior to taking any supplements, to make sure you are not jeopardizing your health or your eligibility. The CSE Athletic Department prides itself in a balanced nutritional diet to be the most beneficial means of performance. You may also use the following web site for further information: NCAA Stance on Supplements: Many nutritional/ dietary supplements contain NCAA banned substances. In addition, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) do not strictly regulate the supplement industry; therefore, purity and safety of nutritional/ dietary supplements cannot be guaranteed. Impure supplements may lead to a positive NCAA drug test. The use of supplements is at the student-athlete s own risk. Student-athletes should contact their institution s team physician or athletic trainer for further information. Tobacco (as per NCAA Rules) The use of all tobacco products by student-athletes and game personnel (e.g., coaches, umpires, athletic trainers, managers) is prohibited during practice sessions and game competition. Penalty: Disqualification for the remainder of the practice or ejection from the contest. Game officials are instructed to take zero tolerance policy in this area. Any use of drugs banned by the NCAA, including steroids and other performance enhancing substances, and/or alcohol that is in violation of the rules, regulations and/or laws of the Departments of Athletics of the State of New Jersey is strictly prohibited, whether in tradition or non-traditional season.

13 CSE Athletic Department Policy CSE student-athletes, of legal drinking age, are required to refrain from the use of alcohol for at least 48 hours prior to any completion, regardless if it is traditional or non-traditional season. Any CSE studentathlete who is under the legal drinking age is subject to state penalties. No alcoholic beverages will be consumed by any athlete while on an intercollegiate athletic trip (regardless of the age of the athlete or the duration of the trip) and alcohol is not permitted in any athletic van, bus, or assigned hotel room. Also, no illegal drug use is permitted while you are a CSE student-athlete. Athletes found in violation of this policy are subject to discipline that may include, but is not limited to, departmental or College probation, educational sessions with a health educator, suspension from games, team, and/or College, and expulsion from the team and/or College. Coaches reserve the right to implement a more stringent individual team policy, but may not fall below the CSE Athletic Department or the University standards. This policy will apply during the Traditional and the Non-Traditional Season. Game suspensions include post-season play and Championship play. Multi-sport athletes will not be relieved of any sanctions previously imposed in connection with rules violation while participating in another team sport when changing sports. At any time you are a CSE student-athlete and involved in an alcohol, socially related incident, or drug use, either in campus or off campus, you will be subject to penalties as determined by the CSE Judicial Board. An alcohol or socially related incident will include but is not limited to any ticket issued by College Security, local, and/or State authorities for underage drinking, open container, DWI, disorderly conduct, or similar incidences. Incidences on campus include those reported by RA s, the College/Security or Police, and/or the Athletic Department Staff. You may also be subject to review by the Judicial Board at CSE for penalties and/or reinstatement.

14 Gambling NCAA Official Position/Statement The NCAA opposes all form of legal and illegal sports wagering on college sports. Sports wagering has become a serious problem that threatens the well-being of the student-athlete and integrity of college sports. NCAA Policy The explosive growth of gambling has caused a noticeable increase in the number of sports wagering-related cases processed by the Association. The Internet has made it easier than ever for student-athletes to place bets, providing easy access, virtual anonymity, and essentially no supervision. Student-athletes are viewed by organized crime and organized gambling as easy marks. When student-athletes gamble, they break the law and jeopardize their eligibility. When student-athletes become indebted to bookies and can t pay off their debts, alternative methods of payment are introduced that threaten the well-being of the student-athlete or undermine an athletic contest- such as point-shaving. The NCAA membership has adopted specific rules prohibiting student-athletes, athletics department staff members, and conference office staff from engaging in sports wagering (Bylaw 10.3). NCAA national office employees are also participation from engaging in sports wagering. Sports competition should be appreciated for the inherent benefits related to participation of student-athletes, coaches, and institutions in fair contests, not the amount of money wagered on the outcome of completion. A student-athlete involved in sports wagering on the student-athlete s institution permanently loses all remaining regular-season and postseason eligibility in all sports. A student-athlete who is involved in any sports wagering activity that involves college sports or professional athletics, through a internet gambling, bookmaker, a parlay card or any other method employed by organized gambling, will be ineligible for all regular-season and postseason completion for at least one year. Student-Athletes and Bracket Contests NCAA member colleges and universities have defined sports wagering as putting something at risk- such as an entry fee- with the opportunity to win something in return. Because of this, student-athletes, coaches and administers may not participate in bracket competitions where there is both a required entry fee and an opportunity to win a prize. While strongly discouraged, student-athletes and administers may participate, under current NCAA rules, in bracket contests, including Facebook and similar activities, where there is not entry fee but a possibility of winning a prize. Some NCAA member schools, however, have chosen to ban student-athletes from participating in these types of bracket contests.

15 Hazing The CSE athletic department will not allow any hazing actions that are implied as conditions of inclusion or exclusion from a group, formal or informal, and may be perpetrated by and individual or a group of individuals. Hazing actions include (but are not limited to): Any type of initiation or other activity where there is an expectation of individuals joining a particular team to participate in behavior designed to humiliate, degrade or abuse them regardless of the person s willingness to participate. Requiring physical exercises such as marching, walking, sit-ups, push-ups, runs. Forcing, requiring, or endorsing consumption of alcoholic beverages or any other substance. This does not exclude water; consuming large amounts of water can be serious and lead to death! Forcing, requiring or pressuring an individual to shave any part of the body, including hair on the head. Any requirement or pressure put on an individual to participate in any activity which is illegal, perverse, and publicly indecent, contrary to genuine moral and/or beliefs, e.g., public profanity, indecent or lewd conduct or sexual gestures in public. Forcing the ingestion of any undesirable, unwanted substance, e.g., spoiled food, etc. Any activity or action that creates a risk to the health, safety or property of the College or any member of its community. Awakening or disturbing individuals during normal sleeping hours. Confinement of any kind. Forcing new members to perform public stunts of buffoonery Requiring any type of personal servitude such as running errands, cleaning apartments or houses, carrying trays, doing laundry, etc. Requiring new members to parade or serenade. Forcing, encouraging or pressuring someone to wear, in public, apparel which is conspicuous and not within the norm of what is considered to be in good taste. Carrying of any items/item that is outside the campus norm that sets new members apart. Requiring participation by new members in scavenger hunts, road trips, drop offs, rookie shows, etc. Physical abuse of any kind. Requiring new members to participate in activities which interfere with scholastic activities. Requiring members to participate in any activities between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.

16 CSE Policy At any time you are a CSE student-athlete and involved in a hazing related incident, either on campus or off campus, you will be subject to penalties as determined by the CSE Judicial Board (please refer to Student Judicial System in the Student Handbook). Social Networking Policy Social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Friendstar and any other digital platforms allow students to communicate with other students. Potentially negative consequences can occur from participating in these networks, and it is important that the College of Saint Elizabeth student-athletes be aware of these consequences and exercise appropriate caution if they chose to participate. Student-athletes are not restricted in the use of these networks, but must keep in mind that any content they make public via on-line social networks must follow acceptable social behaviors. This content must also comply with the federal government, the State of New Jersey, CSE, NEAC, NCAA, and the CSE athletic department rules and regulations. You are a representative of the college and are always in the public eye because you are an intercollegiate student-athlete. Posting certain content may cause any student-athlete to face discipline and even dismissal for violation of policies and procedures of the College of Saint Elizabeth Athletic Department and/or the College. Please keep the following guidelines in mind as you participate on social networking web sites. Before participating in any online community, understand that anything posted online is available to anyone in the world. Any text or photo placed online is completely out of your control the moment it is placed online-even if you limit access to your site. You should not post information, photos, or other items online that could embarrass you, your family, your team, the athletic department or the College of Saint Elizabeth. This includes information, photos and items that may be posted by others on your page. You should not post your home address, local address, phone number(s), birth date or other personal information such as PIN numbers or passwords. You could be opening yourself up to predators. Exercise caution as to what information you post on your website about your whereabouts or plans. You could be opening yourself up to predators. Be aware of who you add as a friend to your site-many people are looking to take advantage of student-athletes or to seek connection with student-athletes to give them a sense of membership on a team. Coaches and athletic department administrators can and do monitor these websites.

17 Prohibited Conduct You are a representative of the College of Saint Elizabeth and must uphold the values and responsibilities of the College and the athletic department. The College of Saint Elizabeth athletic department will not tolerate reckless and malicious behavior through the use of social networking websites. It is important that student-athletes understand the potentially negative image that they can portray about student-athletes, coaches, the athletics program, and the university. The following is a guideline of things that should be avoided when using a social networking site: Derogatory language and remarks about their teammates or coaches; other College of Saint Elizabeth student-athletes or coaches; student-athletes, coaches, athletics administrators or representatives of other universities or colleges; SUNYIT faculty or staff; or other athletics officials, administrators, or representatives. Demeaning statements about or threats to any third party. Incriminating photos or statements depicting violence; hazing; sexual harassment; vandalism, stalking; underage drinking; selling, possessing, or using controlled substances; or any other inappropriate behaviors. Creating a serious danger to the safety of another person or making a credible threat of serious physical or emotional injury to another person. Indicating knowledge of an unreported felony theft or felony criminal damage to property. Indicating knowledge of an unreported NCAA violation regardless if the violation was unintentional or intentional. The College of Saint Elizabeth security/ Police and other local police and sheriff s offices check these websites regularly. In addition to the unfortunate reality of online predators, potential employer and internship supervisors also use these sites to screen candidates. Many graduate programs and scholarship committees now search these sites to screen applications. The athletic department advises College of Saint Elizabeth student-athletes to exercise extreme caution in their use of social networking websites.

18 Student Managers Manager must be in good academic standing Managers cannot miss class for practice One student manager, designated by the head coach, can travel to away contests but cannot miss class to travel Head coach will designate job responsibilities that must be given to student managers and she must sign job responsibilities Student-athletes/former student-athletes may not be student managers All student managers must complete NCAA paperwork. Not-Cleared Student-Athletes Any student-athletes who are not NCAA or medically cleared cannot participate in any team activities including practice and games Not-cleared student-athletes are not permitted to sit on the bench during practice/games They are not permitted to travel with the team They are not permitted to stay in team rooms on away trips They are not permitted to receive any athletic apparel Injured Student-Athletes Injured athletes should be meeting with the athletic trainer regarding the injury o Continue to see athletic trainer for injury for rehabilitation, treatment, or updates o Fill out necessary paperwork with the athletic trainer Return to play will be determined by the Athletic Trainer, Team Physician, and Dr. Susan Lasker Injured players may sit on the bench at home competition o Athlete should be supporting team, dressed appropriately and refrain from using cell phone Injured players may travel to away contests and may sit on the bench during away contests, but may not miss class for either home or away contests. Injured players can attend practice but cannot directly participate until fully cleared for participation Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) The SAAC is an important component of athletics at the College of Saint Elizabeth. This group is comprised of student-athlete leaders who represent every varsity sport. It allows athletes to have a voice about anything regarding athletics/academics at the College of Saint Elizabeth as well as legislation and rules at the NCAA Division III level. Their mission is to present a positive image of the student-

19 athlete to the College of Saint Elizabeth community and local community. They work to ensure equal opportunities for all student-athletes, both academically and athletically, and to inspire unity, teamwork, and school pride throughout the campus community. This group meets once a month with the purpose of conveying any concerns or interests of their respective teams. It provides a venue that allows them to communicate amongst themselves and the coordinator, a place where their opinions are heard, and a forum to discuss issues or concerns that will be relayed to the athletic administration. Each team is represented by 2 members selected by the Head Coach. Officer are selected by the Department of Athletics.

In addition, I am aware that the team may be subject to group discipline that can include, but is not limited to, team probation, cancellation of individual contests and/or cancellation of the entire season.
