2 Goals The goals of the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative are to assist agencies in identifying their existing data center assets and to formulate consolidation plans that include a technical roadmap and consolidation targets. The Initiative aims to address the growth of data centers and assist agencies in leveragi ing best practices from the public and private sector to: Promote the use of Green IT by reducing the overall energy and real estate footprint of government data centers; Reduce the cost of data center hardware, software and operations; Increase the overall llit security post ture of the government; and, Shift IT investments to more efficient computing gplatforms and technologies. 2

3 Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative 800 After an 8 month peer review process, we now know that the government is operating and maintaining almost 2,100 data centers. Through hthe FD CCI, a minimum i of 800 data centers will be closed by

10 Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative Data Center Consolid dation Task kforce The overall scope of the Task kforce is to serve as the central group for collaboration, guiding, identifying, and disseminating key pieces of information, solutions and processes that will help the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative (FDCCI). This Task Force will coordinate across Government Agencies in support of the overall Initiative. 10

13 Government-wide Marketplace 2. Create a government-wide marketplace for data center availability Within the next 18 months, OMB and GSA willl create a government-wide marketplace that better utilizes spare capacity within operational data centers. This online marketplace will match agencies with extra capacity to agencies with increasing demand, thereby improving the utilization of existing facilities. The marketplace will help agencies with available capacity promote their available data center space. Once agencies have a clear sense of the existing capacity landscape, they can make more informed consolidation decisions 13

16 Successs Story 6,750 square feet reduced $1.7M annua al operating cost avoidance 10% power reduction Collocation Agencies are already reaping the savings and se ervice improvements as a result of consolidating brick and mortar data centers and shifting to the cloud. By consolidating two of its major data centers this past year, the Census Bureau was able to close a contractor- Bureau will avoid $1.7 million in annual operated 6,570 square foot facility. The Censuss operating costs starting in Simultaneously, Census is busy enhancing its remaining facilities and now hosts data center services for the International Trade Administration (ITA), another part of the Department of Commerce, and offers co-location and hosting services to extend opportunities for efficiencies to other gov vernment agencies. When combined with robust uses of virtualization and cloud technologies, Census has reduced the data center power consumption of all its data centers by 10 percent. 16
