Funding: French Ministry of Scientific and Technological Research Summary: Road transport has been the main source of atmospheric pollutants in French urban areas since the 1980s. Although French citizens are preoccupied with air pollution, daily travel is still mostly by car. Improving air quality will require widespread commitment to the modification of daily behavior and travel habits. The gap between perceptions and behavior is problematic. The purpose of this research was to better understand the role played by communication in making the population aware of air pollution and deciding to fight it. Two types of data were collected and analysed: documents (national press, television and radio programs, leaflets published by institutions, associations and industrialists) and interviews (semi-directive interviews conducted in the streets of several Parisian suburbs). The main research finding is that connections between media discourse and public perceptions are centered around specific representations, via vocabulary ( peak in pollution, Air Quality Index...), topics ( car-free day, clean cars...) and visual images (smoke from chimney stacks, babies in strollers exposed to exhaust fumes...). These connections provided a basis to formulate practical advice regarding public communication about air pollution. The presence of the topic environment in the public forum was characterized (analysis of environmental discourse circulating in French television news) and the links between media discourse and individual perceptions analyzed (analysis of media reception). The account is derived from desk research and from the results of a set of interviews conducted with key officials, policy makers and stakeholders. For the French case study: collection and analysis of the literature, conduct and analysis of semi-directive interviews (26 senior and desklevel officials from public risk assessment and management institutions, experts and stakeholders), participation in the writing of the different reports; feedback workshop and A/V materials. Funding: French Ministry of Ecology / French Environmental Agency This research program aimed to analyze the construction and the circulation of environmental actors discourses via the Internet. It was split in two parts. The first part of this program dealt with the presence of the topic environment on the Internet. This exploration was done through the construction of a cartography and a semio-pragmatic analysis of all the French web sites dedicated to this topic. The second part was centered on a specific field study in the urban area of Rouen, France. Different discourses and practices about the use of new information and communication technologies in the field of the environnement were collected and analyzed. Field study in the city of Rouen (26 semi-directive interviews with persons engaged in the conception of environmental websites and with related actors; one week of ethnographic observation), participation in the writing of the different reports. This multiplicity of discourse tends to make the understanding of issues related to ecology and sustainable development even more complex.
