1 Milken Institute School of Public Health Department of Health Services Management and Leadership Note: All curriculum revisions will be updated immediately on the website Department Chair Dr. Robert E Burke 2175 K Street, NW, Suite 320 Phone: bobburke@gwu.edu Department fax: Program Director Dr. Leonard Friedman 2175 K Street, NW, Suite 320 Phone: friedmal@gwu.edu Mission The Health Services Administration program will develop leaders who possess the values, knowledge, and skills to achieve optimal delivery of healthcare. Overview Since its founding in 1959, the Department of Health Services Management and Leadership offers training in health services administration to help meet the growing need for skilled executives to manage health-related organizations and programs. Because it recognizes and responds to the fast-paced, dynamic changes occurring in the industry today, the Department is well-positioned to prepare not only health care managers, but the health care leaders of tomorrow. An MHA degree from the Department of Health Services Management incorporates business and medical informatics training, knowledge of health care systems, law and policy, critical values in decision making, and much more. The Department's special strengths include an emphasis on experiential learning and community service, distinguished faculty, research collaborations and relationships with policymaking and health care organizations in Washington, DC. Active alumni and student associations foster mentoring, networking and other professional development opportunities. Building on our 53 years of experience preparing health care leaders and our recent success in e-learning, the Executive MHA degree is designed for adult learners who possess either clinical or administrative experience in healthcare delivery. The EMHA is designed to be completed in two years but can be completed in five years. Classes are taught in a hybrid model combining online modules (ten weeks in length) and executive format, face-toface intensive classes. The EMHA curriculum focuses on developing the skills and values needed for persons who seek to create highly effective healthcare organizations. Leadership and ethics is taught during the two of the four on-campus session and is integrated into the various online modules. Ten week long online modules concentrate on the eight core content areas required by healthcare leaders. These include management and strategy, finance and quantitative methods, quality improvement, informatics and decision science, community health and quantitative methods, law and policy and systems thinking and learning. The culminating activities for EMHA students include a major field-based research project and a portfolio that demonstrates the achievement of program competencies.

Core Online Course Requirements (50 HSML HSML HSML Management and Strategy 5 Despite all of the technology and equipment available in modern healthcare organizations, healthcare delivery is and will remain a distinctly human enterprise. Management focuses on the behavior of people in organizations and will have special emphasis on communication, change management, culture and supervisory skills. Strategy emphasizes the mission, vision and values of the organization and how healthcare leaders can evaluate the internal and external environment to shape the direction taken by the organization. Medical Informatics and Decision Science 5 Information technology has become a central part of virtually every healthcare organization. Healthcare managers and leaders must understand the capabilities and limitations of health information technology and how health IT can be used most effectively. Coupled with health IT is its critical role in helping craft organizational and clinical decisions based on robust data and information. Decision science and evidencebased management must be part of the skill set of every healthcare leader. Finance 5 One of the distinguishing features of the US healthcare delivery system is our complex reimbursement system. This content area will focus on understanding the financial operations of healthcare organizations including various sources of revenue and effective financial performance.
5 HSML HSML HSML HSML HSML Community and Public Health Health Economics and Quantitative Methods 5 Healthcare delivery has evolved from caring for individual sick people to caring for the health of communities. Leaders in highly effective healthcare organizations need the skills and tools necessary to understand core community health principles including behavioral health, epidemiology and environmental health. 5 Health economics allows healthcare leaders to use economic principles to understand factors influencing supply and demand for healthcare goods and services. Quantitative methods are a critical tool in order to make sense of the mass of data and scientific research that affects healthcare delivery. Quality Improvement 5 Highly effective healthcare leaders understand that quality improvement tools and methods must be at the heart of every healthcare organization. Whether it is the quality of clinical care and patient safety, driving out waste and excessive cost or striving to deliver the most cost effective care possible, quality improvement must be part of the skill set of every healthcare leader. Starting with the principles of W. Edwards Deming and statistical process control and continuing through six sigma and Toyota-style production models, quality improvement is going to be the yardstick by which outstanding healthcare organizations are measured. Law and Policy 5 Healthcare is one of the most highly regulated industries in the nation with a plethora of federal and state laws combined with requirements from multiple accrediting and licensing agencies. Healthcare managers and leaders need a clear understanding of the legal and regulatory environment in which they operate. Additionally, healthcare leaders need to obtain the know how to navigate the multiple federal and state policies that affect their organizations. Seminar in Health Services Management 6 The seminar in health services management serves as a synthesis of all the previous online modules and first three immersions. Given the complexity of healthcare delivery, it is vital that EMHA students obtain a detailed understanding of systems thinking and systems learning as a guiding principle for organizational effectiveness and will serve as the organizing principle for this module. On-Campus Immersion Requirement HSML 62XX Leadership and Ethics Development of leaders in high performing healthcare organizations requires a combination of theory and practice. Using the MBTI, students will uncover their leadership style and practice the skills of highly effective leadership. Concurrent with this is an examination of ethical principles and practices and how those practices are used by leaders. HSML 62XX Leadership and Ethics This is a continuation of Leadership and Ethics 1. Students will use principles including emotional intelligence, servant leadership and transformational leadership to further explore and develop their leadership attributes. The framework for this immersion will be on leading organizational change activities. HSML 62XX Health System Analysis 3.0 This immersion asks EMHA students to spend a concentrated period of time studying first hand either an outstanding health system in the United States or a national health system outside our borders. The objective of the analysis is to critically examine and assess the structure, function and operations of a domestic or international health system. Students must select either the domestic or international option. HSML 62XX Organization Research Project and Portfolio Presentation 1.5 EMHA students will verbally present the findings of their organizational research projects and leadership portfolios during this immersion. Feedback on the research projects will be provided by peers and a panel of healthcare leaders.
