3 OFFICE HOURS Prefer Appointment/ Set up via Tuesday (3 to 4 PM) Monday, Wednesday (9:30-10:30 AM) COURSE DESCRIPTION This course provides students with a sound knowledge of genetics and genomics essential for health care providers in evaluating needs of patients and delivering of care to patients and families. The course prepares nursing students by reinforcing the basic principles of genetics while exploring new advances and discussing how these advances will affect health care. The course focuses on the relationship of genetics and genomics to health, prevention, screening, diagnostics, prognostics, selection of treatment, and monitoring of treatment effectiveness. Genomic influences on complex health problems, chromosomal and mitochondrial diseases, enzyme and collagen disorders, childhood onset disorders, adult onset disorders, psychiatric and behavioral disorders, and cancer will be covered. Using the ClinicalTrials.gov website (basic search), for an assigned common, complex disease, report via summary the findings to the large group regarding clinical trials. For the assigned immunologic disorders (Rheumatoid arthritis, Type I diabetes, Addison s disease, Myasthenia gravis and Grave s disease), provide a summary regarding the immunologic basis of disease and provide information on ongoing genetic research. 9 EVALUATION AND GRADES Graded activities and percent of the overall course grade: TEACHING STRATEGIES Students are expected to be active learners. It is a basic assumption of the instructor that students will be involved (beyond the materials and lectures presented in the course) discovering, processing, and applying the course information using peer-review journal articles, researching additional information and examples on the Internet, and discussing course material and clinical experiences with their peers. A Discussion Board is provided in Blackboard specifically for students ( Student Lounge ) to share websites, articles, apps, and clinical experiences relevant to the course topics. ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTIONS Discussion Board Activities: Discussion Boards provide an avenue for synthesis of material / information. A Discussion Board is provided in this course as a way to help students process course materials, express thoughts, and engage others opinions and ideas in a healthy and productive learning environment. Students are expected to respond to all discussion board assessments using the rubric attached to the assignment. Assignments : Assignments are designed to allow student opportunity in the application of information gained through review of a multitude of resources and may be individually assigned or group assigned. Group assignments necessitate full participation of all members of the group and require the use of online submission by posted due date. Students are encouraged to seek information from group members early in the semester to accommodate individual time constraints related to their focus on the course in order to maximize efficiency in group work. Testing: Evaluation of student learning in this course may take a variety of forms, including on line assessments or individual topic mini projects. Access to exams will be through Respondus Lockdown Browser and will be video recorded via Respondus Monitor [See Other Required Materials for a list of needed equipment]. To prepare for testing using Respondus Monitor, see Respondus Monitor Help under the Resources tab for the course in blackboard. There are two practice quizzes: a) one is a Webcam test and b) a short 10 question practice quiz over ASU trivia that is not graded. These tools will be available to the student to assure accessibility. Students are highly encouraged to go through these practice quizzes in advance of taking a graded exam. This process will allow you to become familiar with the technology associated with testing and improve testing environment. 10 documents: Angelo State Student Handbook located on the ASU website ASU Graduate Catalog located on the ASU website and University Undergraduate Nursing Handbook, located on the Nursing website: IMPORTANT UNIVERSITY DATES June 2, Class begins July 4-Holiday June 30-July 3 Exam One/during Summer I finals week Aug 4-8 Exam Two/During Summer II finals week STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY & ATTENDANCE This class is asynchronous, meaning you do not have to be on-line at a certain time. There are readings which you will have to complete to be able to adequately participate in individual and group assessments. In order to complete this course successfully, you do have to participate in all course activities i.e. discussion boards, course projects, reflective logs, etc. Students are expected to engage in course activities and submit work by due dates and times. The hope is that students will make substantive contributions which reflect integration of assigned materials as well as any outside readings as appropriate. Scholarly contribution is an expectation. For planning purposes, this class will probably require a minimum of 6-9 study hours per week on average. COMMUNICATION Faculty will respond to and/or telephone messages within 24 hours during working hours Monday through Friday. Weekend messages may not be returned until Monday although reasonable attempt will be made to accommodate learning during this time. Written communication via Blackboard: It is an expectation of this class that you use formal writing skills giving appropriate credit to the source for your ideas. Follow APA (2010) 6 th edition (2 nd Printing or higher only) guidelines for referencing. Written communication via All private communication will be done exclusively through your ASU address. Check frequently for announcements and policy changes. ASSESSMENT SUBMISSION In this class, all assessments will be completed and submitted through Blackboard using the lockdown browser. Issues with technology arise from time to time. In the event of an issue, students must contact IT ( ) of the issue. Students must then communicate with the instructor the nature of the issue in order to allow resetting of the exam. Work completed prior to the technology issue will count toward grade and students will not be allowed to start over upon resetting. In the absence of a communication from IT, assessments/exams will not

11 be reset. Please make sure that you communicate with IT on this matter. All online examinations will be presented using a format inclusive of one question at a time viewing and no back-tracking. All questions will be timed in accordance to amount of information being requested. Generally, one to two minutes per question is applied for multiple choice questions and more time allowed for short answer questions. Examinations are not open book unless otherwise specified by the instructor. Assessments in this course are not relegated solely to on line testing but may include other means. LATE WORK OR MISSED ASSESSMENTS POLICY The course is set up on weekly modules. The week begins on Monday and ends on Saturday. Assignment due dates are shown on the calendar/schedule or posted within Blackboard. Twenty points will be deducted from final grade for every day past the due date. ACADEMIC HONESTY Academic honesty is expected on all work. Students are expected to maintain complete honesty and integrity in their online experiences. Any student found guilty of any form of dishonesty in academic work is subject of disciplinary action and possible expulsion from ASU.
