2 Master of Public Health Degree The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program can accommodate working professionals or those ready to commit to a full-time program. Most classes on all campuses are offered in the late afternoons/early evenings so students can continue working or gain experience while earning their public health degree. The MPH degree provides students with a clear understanding of the roles of the core disciplines in public health. It also provides students with sufficient knowledge of the theory and terminology used by these disciplines to allow effective participation in interdisciplinary public health efforts and with specialized skills in at least one public health discipline. Your area of specialization should play an important role in your choice of departments and, consequently, in your campus location. MPH DEGREE REQUIREMENTS The MPH degree program at the Rutgers School of Public Health requires 45 credit hours. Full-time students may complete the degree requirements within 1.5 years, but it usually requires two years. Part-time students may take up to six years to complete the coursework but should satisfy the core requirements within 2.5 years of matriculation. MPH Degree Requirements Core Courses 15 credit hours Required Department 9-15 credit hours* Courses Electives 9-12 credit hours* Fieldwork 6 credit hours Total 45 credit hours *varies by department A Head Start on the MPH Degree The is pleased to offer the BA/MPH or BS/MPH articulated degree option for select, highly-qualified undergraduate students with an interest in a public health career. The articulated program, administered through the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, is open to all majors attending Rutgers-New Brunswick. The program allows Rutgers-New Brunswick undergraduate students to take up to 15 graduate core course credits at the New Brunswick Campus toward both degrees while enrolled as an undergraduate paying undergraduate tuition. The graduate credits obtained as an undergraduate from the Rutgers School of Public Health MPH degree program cannot be transferred to other graduate programs. This program provides select students advanced placement in graduate study and allows the School to attract and retain the best students from Rutgers-New Brunswick. NEW BRUNSWICK DEPARTMENTS y Biostatistics: the development and application of statistical reasoning and methods. y Environmental and Occupational Health: the study of environmental and occupational factors that affect communities or workplaces. y Epidemiology: the study of patterns of disease and injury in human populations and its application to the control of health problems. y Health Education and Behavioral Science: addresses the behavioral, social and cultural factors related to individual and population health and health disparities over the life course. y Health Systems and Policy: examines the delivery, quality and costs of health care for individuals and populations. MPH CORE COURSES PHCO 0501: Health Systems and Policy (3 cr) This course introduces the student to the history organization financing, and regulation of medical and public health services in the United States. Special emphasis is placed on the social and behavioral factors that shape health, inequalities in health, and health services. PHCO 0502: Principles and Methods of Epidemiology (3 cr) This course introduces students to the study of disease and ill health through their patterns of occurrence in human populations. Approaches to estimating the burden of disease, making inferences about cause of disease and in evaluating primary secondary, and tertiary prevention strategies are presented. PHCO 0503: Introduction to Environmental Health (3 cr) This course explores the way in which particular characteristics of our environment impinge on health. Students examine health problems associated with chemical physical, and biological agents; and how those agents impact food safety, infectious disease, air quality, water quality, and land resources in community and occupational settings. PHCO 0504: Introduction to Biostatistics (3 cr) This course is an introduction to biostatistical concepts and methods commonly encountered by public health professionals. Students are also expected to complete several computer-based exercises for this course. PHCO 0505: Health Education and Behavioral Science in Public Health (3 cr) This course introduces the student to learning and behavioral science principles theories, and practices that provide the framework for the practice of health education.
