2 Chicago is a fitting site for the institute s groundbreaking academic venture. It is the home of the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation, which has governed international civil aviation worldwide since 1947, the location of two of the nation s busiest airports, a national hub for both United Airlines and American Airlines, and the headquarters of The Boeing Company.

3 INTERNATIONAL AVIATION LAW INSTITUTE Established in 2004, the International Aviation Law Institute (IALI) is the first academic institute of its kind in the United States. IALI provides a thriving intellectual environment for faculty, students and industry experts. The institute is renowned for its commitment to research, scholarship and teaching in the dynamic fields of aviation regulatory, competition, finance and tort law. To achieve this mission, IALI is engaged in educating the next generation of experts in aviation law and policy through its programs and its journal, Issues in Aviation Law and Policy. IALI originates and disseminates groundbreaking research and analysis of timely issues in aviation law and policy for the benefit of academics, policymakers and industry leaders. The institute also acts as a forum to discuss and evaluate various policy approaches to the regulation of the transnational air transport industry. GO.DEPAUL.EDU/AVIATION

4 AVIATION LAW CURRICULUM DePaul arguably offers the nation s most focused and comprehensive curriculum in aviation law. The College of Law also offers a number of international law courses that provide the necessary skills and background to navigate the complex field of aviation law. Our degree programs include a Master of Laws (LLM) in International Law with a concentration in International Aviation Law and Policy, and a Master of Jurisprudence (MJ) with a concentration in Aviation Law. The JD program offers two certificate options in aviation law. Students may apply the aviation law courses toward fulfillment of the requirements for a Certificate in Aviation Law. Alternatively, JD students may apply many aviation law courses, along with other international law courses, toward fulfillment of a Certificate in International and Comparative Law. OVER THE PAST DECADE, THE INSTITUTE HAS POSITIONED ITSELF AS THE LEADING VENUE IN THE UNITED STATES FOR THE TEACHING AND STUDY OF INTERNATIONAL AVIATION LAW. 5 IALI PROGRAMS PUBLIC AND COOPERATIVE ACTIVITIES Through IALI, students have the opportunity to participate in a broad range of international symposia, presentations, working groups, seminars and other activities on emerging issues in civil aviation. Recent examples include the annual International Air Transport Association Legal Symposium; the World Routes Strategy Summit; the Academic Conference on the Cape Town Convention at the University of Oxford and the Annual IALI/Chaddick Lecture, a collaboration with DePaul University s Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development. GLOBAL CONNECTIONS IALI has associations with leading aviation industry stakeholders and academic, government and nongovernmental institutions worldwide. It has formed strategic partnerships with Leiden University s Institute of Air and Space Law in the Netherlands, the Department of Transportation at the University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the German Marshall Fund of the United States. Additionally, IALI has worked cooperatively with McGill University s Institute of Air and Space Law in Montreal, the International Civil Aviation Organization, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, the Centre for Aviation (Australia), the World Economic Forum s Global Agenda Council on the Future of Travel & Tourism, and the European Air Law Association. ISSUES IN AVIATION LAW AND POLICY Issues in Aviation Law and Policy, the journal of IALI, is dedicated to presenting emerging, cutting-edge issues on legal and policy matters affecting civil aviation worldwide. The journal is a forum for change, designed for a broad audience of aviation attorneys, academics, industry stakeholders, lobbyists, government agencies and regulators, students and researchers. Issues in Aviation Law and Policy spotlights trends, supplies a much-needed forum for discussion and reasoned opinion, and provides its readers with direct access to many of those responsible for crafting and analyzing vital decisions and policies. Students have the opportunity to write and edit articles in the journal. VISITING SCHOLARS In a continuing effort to encourage worldwide scholarly research and dialogue in aviation law and policy, IALI invites visiting scholars from law schools in other countries. The visiting scholars are primarily engaged in research intended to create, improve and modernize the national civil aviation legal, regulatory and policy infrastructures. GO.DEPAUL.EDU/AVIATION

6 IALI PROGRAMS (CONTINUED) ORAL HISTORY PROJECT One of IALI s marquee initiatives, the Conversations with Aviation Leaders oral history project, is developing a legal and policy history of the U.S. airline industry since its deregulation in 1978, as told through the voices and memories of those who participated in it. The project is a valuable resource for the large community of students, scholars and policymakers who are interested in understanding the airline industry s role in the broader deregulatory movement that continues to transform economic policy today. Interviews include the late Alfred Kahn, PhD, emeritus professor of economics at Cornell University; John R. Byerly, the U.S. State Department s longest-serving deputy assistant secretary of state for transportation affairs; former Virginia Governor Gerald L. Baliles, who chaired the 1993 Presidential Airline Commission and Frederick W. Smith, founder, chairman and CEO of FedEx Corporation. SARIN LEIDEN INTERNATIONAL AIR LAW MOOT COURT COMPETITION Students have the opportunity to represent DePaul and IALI at this international competition organized by Leiden University and the Sarin Foundation. Past competitors have traveled to Bucharest, Romania, and Beijing, China. AVIATION LAW PROFESSOR BLOG IALI sponsors and maintains an active aviation law blog, which is part of the Law Professor Blogs Network. Students, researchers, attorneys and industry stakeholders turn here for critical analysis of current issues in domestic and global aviation law and policy. The blog features regular updates and commentary from resident experts at IALI as well as guest bloggers from the academy, the media and across the entire spectrum of the air transport industry.
