IBM Impact 2012 Conference Don t Underestimate Monitoring in the Cloud! Rodney Morrison VP Products SL Corporation Session Id: 2974a
Topics Cloud Definition Cloud Deployment Models Monitoring options for Cloud Applications Monitoring challenges Future of cloud monitoring Discussion
Expertise Application Performance Monitoring Collect all necessary application-centric and middleware-centric performance data Configure data aggregation and persistence, filters, analytics, alerts and displays to deliver information tailored for app support teams Oracle Coherence Monitoring Understand the behavior of Coherence Debug and validate functionality after configuration changes Integrate OCM with existing monitoring tools Enable quick notification of problems Middleware Monitoring Determine how applications are interacting with middleware systems Assess whether applications are running efficiently and reliably Ensure the maximum benefit from an ESB investment
Our Differentiators in the Cloud OOCL World WideShipment Tracking Hospitality Card application at Harrah s casino gaming tables Online Gaming Systems Tax Season at Intuit PJM Real time Energy Pricing Banking application in Korea
Trends in Monitoring Cloud Apps How Cloud Apps Are Monitored 28% 24% No monitoring 48% Whatever the service provides Monitoring tools InformationWeek, March 12, 2012
Can I Monitor My Cloud Application? What Cloud Service Models are planned? What type of monitoring is exposed in those services? What type of monitoring do I need? Is it possible to insert my own monitoring tools in these services? Do my existing monitoring tools function and perform well in the cloud?
Cloud Defined Cloud Scalable IT capabilities that are provided via self-service to the business. Types of Cloud Models Public Cloud: IT service offered via the public internet Private Cloud: IT service that providers offer to a select group of customers Internal Cloud: IT service that is provided to its own business External Cloud: IT service offered to its own business that is hosted externally Hybrid Cloud: IT service that uses both internal and external providers
Cloud Service Models Software as a Service (Saas) Google Apps, salesforce.com Platform as a Service (PaaS) IBM SmartCloud, TIBCO Silver, Microsoft Azure, Force.com, CloudFoundry, Google App Engine Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) AmazonWeb Services (EC2, S3, EBS, SimpleDB), Rackspace, AT&T, Century Link/Savvis
What Monitoring Is Provided by a Service? SaaS Typically not much. SLAs are most often described in terms of percentage of downtime not performance Don t have much support of exposure to performance metrics PaaS Some expose pre-defined performance metrics Some provide dashboards IaaS Dashboards and exposed pre-defined infrastructure metrics Some support custom metrics via the same interface
Types of Monitoring Systems Monitoring Infrastructure Database Middleware Application metrics Application Monitoring End-User Synthetic Transaction End-User Packet Capture Byte-code instrumentation Transaction monitoring
What Can I Add? IaaS PaaS SaaS Systems Yes Depends No Synthetic User Exp Packet Capture User Exp. Yes Yes Yes Depends Depends No Transaction Depends Depends No Byte Code Yes Depends No Yes Typically most monitoring solutions and Cloud service will work No Not typically a fit Depends Solutions often break, or difficult to integrate or manage. Depends on the compatibility of service and monitor
Common Reasons Monitoring Breaks Agents are not supported on the service platforms PaaS services make it difficult or provide no management features to automate inclusion of custom agents If agents can be supported on the cloud platform, the hosted monitoring system cant scale or easily be configured to communicate with the agents. The service provides some monitoring information but it provides no alerting capabilities and is difficult to integrate with existing ones
The Future of Cloud Monitoring PaaS offerings will become more commonly used and provide more value PaaS offerings will begin to be more commonly used in mission critical apps PaaS offerings will begin to differentiate with their support for monitoring Monitoring vendors will differentiate with support for the most popular PaaS services
Discussion Points Think about monitoring when choosing your Cloud service even if you don t need it now Evaluate whether the service will satisfy monitoring needs and how Evaluate whether the monitoring tools you would prefer to use will function in the Cloud service and if you have options
