1 March 9, 2015 Faculty Senate Meeting VICE PRESIDENT FOR INTERPROFESSIONL EDUCATION AND INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS S REPORT ACADEMIC RESOURCES P. Ciejka Librarians will be available before and after the Mondays in March to answer questions about BrowZine, a free app that lets you browse, read and monitor the latest journals available from iphones, ipads or Androids. During the month of February, the Library asked students for their top three library wishes. There were 40 individual submissions with a total of 94 wishes. Overwhelmingly, the top request was for longer hours. Other Library wishes were: microwaves, group and individual study rooms, free printing and more electrical outlets. We have responded to each request and are looking into possibilities for granting some of the wishes. COUNCIL OF DEANS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING D. Presenter(s): Dr. Jose Barral Dr. Chris McKee Mr. Ryan Micks Mr. Carlos Escobar Mr. Steve LeBlanc and Mr. Mike Mastrangelo Topic: MD MBA Dual Degree Proposal UTMB UHCL OIE Update THECB Annual Report on Low Producing Programs and Departmental Review Schedule Changes Legislative Affairs Update Facilities Planning Update as it relates to the Academic Enterprise Plans for the Hurricane Season Still at Risk related to the Academic Enterprise INTERPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION AND PRACTICE (IPEP) Prepared by Shelley Smith, Assistant Director of IPEP Interprofessional Education Day was held Thursday, March 5 from 1 p.m. 4:30. Over 650 students and 62 Interprofessional Scholars attended the keynote and workshops. Forty two faculty and staff members presented 22 interprofessional workshops. Preliminary feedback was extremely positive. Students and workshop leaders will be sent evaluations. 1

2 Interprofessional Scholars served as leaders for IPE Day. Prior to the event, the students helped in the planning and preparation. Two scholars were assigned to each workshop. They prepared for the event by contacting the workshop leaders to see what they needed as far as room set up, etc. The students also helped on the day of the event with registration, assisting workshop leaders, and serving as guides. Some Interprofessional Scholars attended the What s happing? event sponsored by the Academy of Master s Teachers on the evening of March 5. The interprofessional events helped students realize some apps that are available to assist in study methods. Interprofessional Education and Practice Advisory Committee A task force has been formed and charged with identifying the needs for an IPEP Office which includes space requirements, location, staffing, and job descriptions. The task force will help guide the objectives set forth in the 2020 Academic Enterprise. IPEP Collaborates with Professionalism Committee IPEP continues to work with the Professionalism Committee to present Brown Bag Lunches with an interprofessional forum to discuss respect at UTMB. A faculty lunch is scheduled for March 10. Attendees will receive CME credit. On April 1, the committee will host a lunch for students. An interprofessional case study with be presented by students who will share their different roles and responsibilities. 2

4 Program News and Updates Dr. Watson is now serving as the Chair of the Graduate Nurse Education (GNE) Demonstration Project. The four participating schools: UTMB, Texas Woman s University, UT Health Science Center Houston, and Prairie View A&M. The School of Nursing received notice of a $2 Million bequest from Ms. Edith West Clarkson, an alumnus of the school. This will be the largest bequest gift from an individual to the SON in the history of UTMB. The Nursing Interprofessional Simulation Center held a session on critical care with a focus on respiratory care with students from SON s BSN program and SHP s Respiratory Therapy and Physician Assistant programs. UTMB School of Nursing received another $75,000 grant from the Good Samaritan Foundation to conduct Evidenced Based Practice conferences. Dr. Patricia Richard and Dr. Patricia Davis will be presiding. The UTMB Student Nurses Association hosted a blood drive on February 23 rd in conjunction with UTMB Blood Bank. 1 Page

5 BSN Program: o Approximately 80% of senior year students attended the nursing recruitment day held by UTMB Health System o Dr. Melissa Geist presented the workshop, Pharmacology Made Insanely Easy, to the graduating class in preparation for the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX RN) o Dr. Cheyenne Martin served as guest lecturer to undergraduate students in NURS 4206 Evidence Based Practice, presenting her research on medical ethics during the Holocaust o Elected representatives from each of the undergraduate courses attended a luncheon with the Program Directors and Associate Dean to provide program feedback MSN Program: o Program Director, Dr. Maureen Wilder, attended the American Association of Colleges of Nursing s (AACN) Clinical Nurse Leader Summit in Orlando, Florida and the American Academy of Nurses (AAN) Masters in Education Conference in St. Petersburg, Florida o The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Program (AANPCP) reported 2014 pass rates of UTMB graduates for the following: Adult Gerontolic Nurse Practitioners (AGNP) 92% passed, 13 total test takers Family Nurse Practitioners (FNP) 100% passed, 42 total takers DNP Program: o The program has received the largest number of applicants thus far since its inception in 2012 o Applications are currently being reviewed with anticipation of admitting 18 students in the Fall semester Nursing PhD Program: o Michelle Poe, RN has successfully completed the oral defense of her dissertation, Impact of Peer Observation on Learning Outcomes in Simulated Clinical Learning Experiences o UTMB Nursing PhD Program alumnus, Karen Alexander, has accepted a position as the Undergraduate Nursing Program Director at the University of Houston Clear Lake 2 Page
