THE ITALIAN ERTMS EXPERIENCE UIC ERTMS Conference Bern Sep 2007
RFI RETE FERROVIARIA ITALIANA ITALIAN INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGER Main tasks: 1) To manage the railway network in accordance with national and European rules 2) To ensure and assess railway safety at system level 3) To assess characteristics of the railway undertakings 4) To propose and issue rules and regulations for railway operations UIC ERTMS Conference Bern September
Italian strategy for ERTMS/ETCS implementation Main phasesp and related basic elements 1. ETCS implementation: interoperability choices (GSM-R coverage of the HS and CR network, ETCS Level 2 on high-speed lines, SCMT as prefitted ETCS Level 1 on conventional main lines and nodes, rolling stock equipped accordingly) 2. First experience with ETCS Level 2 on the Rome-Naples high-speed line and Novara-Torino in commercial operation (solved and unsolved problems on both infrastructure and rolling stock) Main lesson learnt Certification and Assessment 3. Extension of SCMT towards ETCS Level 1 on corridors linking up with Europe (adding standard ETCS features to track-side SCMT: consequences for balise configuration, how to resolve the infill issue the proposed radio infill solution) 3 UIC ERTMS Conference Bern September 2007
The RFI Interoperable Network HS/HC Lines + interoperable corridors A,B,D About km of interoperable network (20% of total RFI network = km) (100% HS/HC net (1 115 km)) + 14% (2 170 km / km) CR network: corridors A,B,D) Brennero Scenario 2015 Sempione Gottardo Bolzano Corridor D Domodossola Luino Chiasso HS network in progress 2008: Milano - Bologna (182 km) 2009: Bologna - Firenze (78 km) 2009: Novara - Milano (34 km) 2011: Firenze - Roma (260 Km) 2013: Milano - Verona (112 km) 2013: Padova - Mestre (25 km) 2013: Verona - Padova (77 km) 2013: Terzo Valico (52 Km) Parigi - Lione Novar a TORINO GENOVA Corridor A 1st phase MILANO Veron a Padov a BOLOGNA FIRENZE VENEZIA ROM A TRIESTE Lubiana Corridor B HS network : Roma - Napoli (204 Km) 2006: Torino - Novara (91 Km) Corridor A 2nd phase (The belt line south of Milan) NAPOLI Interoperable corridors in Italy Corridor A Rotterdam - Genova (1st phase) 230 km Corridor A Rotterdam - Genova (2nd phase) 290 km Corridor B Stockholm - Napoli 978 km Corridor D Valencia - Budapest 674 km UIC ERTMS Conference Bern September

ERTMS/ETCS on HS / HC: the Benefits Transportation on Doubles available capacity on the route Estimated traffic in 2015 on the vertical axis 35 million passengers and 10 million tonnes of freight Existing lines dedicated to freight transport and local and urban transport Regional rail services redesigned and completion of large rail hubs Environment Less environmental impact than road, equivalent to the discharge of a city with 220 thousand inhabitants (e.g. Perugia+Treviso) and consumption and emissions of a 102 MW power station (1.3% of Italy s domestic power consumption). 7 UIC ERTMS Conference Bern September 2007
