12 Recognition of Prior Learning Option Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process that reviews a person s prior experience and current ability and knowledge, and enables them to bypass the learning process and go directly to the assessment process.
13 Recognition of Prior Learning Option If skills and knowledge have been maintained to industry standard and tasks have been performed correctly under a range of circumstances, over a period of time and continually then Assessment only and RPL can: Reduce costs (down time, text and training costs, travel and resource costs) Avoid repetition, frustration and boredom Accelerate job readiness or licencing readiness Improve morale and become part of a retention strategy to keep staff actively engaged
14 Recognition of Prior Learning Option How to prepare for an application for RPL Read the Unit of Competency Recall your experience and successes Talk to colleagues about their experiences Consider if you have any evidence that could be beneficial Write a resume Undertake any self assessment Skill up in areas that may require it Use the Recognition Gateway

16 Assessment Only Option If you are confident about your existing skills and knowledge and have answered YES to most of the questions on the Recognition Gateway then you can choose to elect to go direct to an assessment

18 Case Study Michael Worked in the fire protection industry for 15 years Holds current unrestricted electrical licence Has an EAHL Qualified Persons (Licence 3) Has an EAHL Experienced Persons (Licence 6) Installed and commissioned, inspected, tested and maintained a wide variety of fire protection electrical components and systems. Worked for a number of employers across various states during his time in the industry.
19 Case Study Michael Michael contacted FPA Australia and spoke to a Trainer and Assessor Based on Michael s experience and current licences it was determined that: He already held CPPFES2043A, a requirement also for EAHL 3. He did not need to do this unit again. Was eligible to undertake the skills set : (5 units) because of his current unrestricted electrical licence. Would access the Recognition Gateway online and complete the EAHL 6 questions from Step 2 of the Recognition Gateway
20 Case Study Michael Michael worked through the questions on the Recognition Gateway
21 Case Study Michael Based on Michael s answers He was encouraged that he would be able to complete the five electrical units of competency required to obtain EAHL 6. During a second discussion with his Assessor, it was decided that Michael: Go straight to assessment only. Not undertake an RPL assessment because he had limited access to documentary evidence from the various employers Note: Michael could complete these units over an extended period of time or do them all at the one workshop. Note however that he must complete the units in numerical order.
