1 2013 Maryland Oral Health Summit BIOGRAPHIES Linda Aldoory, PhD Endowed Chair and Director; Associate Professor Herschel S. Horowitz Center for Health Literacy, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland Department of Behavioral and Community Health, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland Dr. Linda Aldoory conducts and publishes studies in health communication, focusing on diverse audiences of health campaigns and media messages. Her multi-methodological research emphasizes women s health and adolescent health. She is former Director of the Center for Risk Communication Research and has won several research paper awards. Some of the scholarly journals in which she is published are Journal of Communication, Health Communication, Journal of Health Communication: International Perspectives, Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Communication Yearbook, and Journal of Public Relations Research. Her most recent book chapters are in the Handbook of Health Communication and the Handbook of Risk and Crisis Communication. Dr. Aldoory has been recipient of research grants from the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition and from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and continues to consult for various health and social service agencies. Penny Anderson, MSW Executive Director Maryland Dental Action Coalition Penny Anderson is currently the Executive Director of the Maryland Dental Action Coalition (MDAC) whose mission is to develop and maintain a statewide partnership of individuals committed to improved health among all Marylanders through increased oral health prevention, education, advocacy and access to oral health care. She started her career as a social worker providing direct services to individuals and families. After obtaining her Master s Degree in Social Work Administration, she began a 20 year career with United Way where she served as the first Executive Director of the United Way of Virginia and managed more than $25 million in funding to over 300 programs and projects for the United Way of Central Maryland. She is recognized nationally for her work which incorporates an emphasis on the maximization of traditional and non-traditional multi-sector partnerships and collaborations and a focus on results-oriented accountability to foster long-term, positive sustainable change in human services systems. Penny has served in leadership positions on a variety of boards and has received numerous awards and recognitions for her work. Most recently, she was named one of the Daily Record s five Influential Marylanders in the field of human services. Katy Battani, RDH, MS Health Education Coordinator Maryland Dental Action Coalition Katy Battani graduated from the University of Maryland, School of Dentistry (UMB) with both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in dental hygiene. Her graduate research focused on student learning styles and achievement in the online learning setting. Katy spent nine years as faculty in the UMB Dental Hygiene Division and was Director of the Dental Hygiene Master's Program during her last four years. In addition to teaching both dental and dental hygiene students in the clinical setting,

2 she has taught several hybrid online undergraduate and graduate level didactic courses and mentored students with their graduate research projects. Katy is currently the Health Education Coordinator for the Maryland Dental Action Coalition (MDAC). She also serves as Chair of the MOHLA-Medical/Dental Collaboration Work Group, Vice Chair of the Maryland Oral Health Association, and member of MDAC/MOHLA s Literacy Work Group. In addition, she works closely with Harford County s Health Department coordinating its Dental Screening and Fluoride Varnish Program for Harford County Public Schools and the Health Department s Women, Infant, and Children s (WIC) Program. She has given numerous oral health presentations to various groups including program staff of WIC, Family Planning, Infants and Toddlers, and the Department of Social Services. Katy founded the Harford/Cecil County Dental Hygienists Association in 2004 and maintains active involvement with its board and members. Bonnie Braun, PhD Professor and Faculty Scholar, Horowitz Center for Health Literacy University of Maryland Bonnie Braun, PhD, was the founding Endowed Chair and Director of the Herschel S. Horowitz Center for Health Literacy at University of Maryland School of Public Health. As a center Faculty Scholar, she co-teaches a health literacy course, now available online. She also serves as the first Chair of the Health Literacy Maryland Steering Committee. She is a nationally recognized consumer educator in Extension, the outreach arm of land-grant universities. Currently, Dr. Braun is leading the Maryland and multi-state initiative to address health insurance literacy. Ralph Fuccillo, MA Chief Mission Officer, DentaQuest; President, DentaQuest Foundation Ralph Fuccillo is the Chief Mission Officer for DentaQuest and serves as the President of DentaQuest Foundation. A seasoned leader in philanthropy, Mr. Fuccillo has a lifelong career in health and human services, education, and organizational development. An advocate for disease prevention and health promotion, his current work is focused on the singular mission of DentaQuest, To Improve the Oral Health of All. He is committed to reducing the burden of oral diseases and poor oral health through the combined resources and national reach of DentaQuest s dental benefits and coverage models, philanthropic investments, and advances in dental care delivery. Ralph also serves as Board Chair of the DentaQuest Institute, Board Chair of Road Scholar (Elderhostel), founding Board member of the U.S. National Oral Health Alliance, Board member of The Massachusetts Dental Society Foundation, and Trustee of Mount Ida College. He currently serves as Co-Chair of the U.S. HHS Region 1 Regional Health Equity Council. Ralph is an advocate for underserved populations, community engagement, and the work of community health centers. He holds a master s degree from Fordham University and a bachelor s degree from University of Massachusetts, Boston. Harry Goodman DMD, MPH Director, Office of Oral Health Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Dr. Harold S. Goodman is President of the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors. In 2007, Dr. Goodman served as the co-chair of the Maryland Dental Action Committee which developed key recommendations to reform the oral health care delivery system for low-income children in Maryland. Dr. Goodman also had served as the Region 3 Head Start Oral Health Consultant from 2

3 and had been responsible for oral health training and technical assistance for Head Start programs in this 6-state region. Dr. Goodman received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Rutgers University in 1972 and his dental degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in He obtained a Masters in Public Health degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health in 1986 and completed a Dental Public Health residency program at the University of Michigan in Dr. Goodman has written many scientific articles and his program has been recognized by national organizations as well as being the recipient of key federal grant awards. Lena Hershkovitz, MPH Manager, Plan Services Maryland Health Benefit Exchange (MHBE) Lena Hershkovitz joined the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange (MHBE) as the Manager of Plan Services in January In this role, she works with the carriers who wish to place products on Maryland s state-based marketplace, Maryland Health Connection, to ensure that they are prepared to meet all of the requirements for Carrier Authorization and Plan Certification. Prior to joining MHBE, she served as the Director of Eligibility Services for Healthy Howard, Inc. in Columbia, Maryland, where she oversaw the activities of the Door to HealthCare - a no wrong door concept for enrolling Howard County residents into the state or local insurance program for which they are eligible. Prior to that, she was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ghana, West Africa, where she worked as a health educator for the Carter Center s Guinea Worm Eradication Program. Mrs. Hershkovitz received her undergraduate degree from The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and has a Master s degree in public health from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. Alice M. Horowitz, PhD Research Associate Professor School of Public Health, University of Maryland Dr. Horowitz is a former senior scientist for the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Health (NIDCR), National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Horowitz was instrumental in initiating the need to address health literacy in dentistry and was one of the authors of the first NIH Program Announcement addressing health literacy. In addition she is a Co-Chair of the Education Subcommittee of the Maryland Dental Action Coalition. She served on the recent Institute of Medicine s panel, Advancing Oral Health in America. She has published over 125 scientific papers and book chapters and is the recipient of numerous awards. Dr. Horowitz holds a PhD in health education from the University of Maryland, College Park. Dushanka Kleinman, DDS, MScD University of Maryland, School of Public Health Dr. Kleinman is a dentist and a board certified specialist in dental public health. Her research has included epidemiologic studies of dental, oral and craniofacial diseases, oral cancer and HIV-related conditions. She has participated in the development of several Surgeon General reports and was the co-executive editor of Oral Health in America: A Report of the Surgeon General (2000). Dr. Kleinman has a particular interest in enhancing the understanding and elimination of health disparities, with a focus on the role of factors that transcend health conditions such as health determinants, health promotion interventions and health literacy. 3

4 Mark D. Macek, DDS, DrPH Associate Professor, Dental Public Health University of Maryland, School of Dentistry Dr. Macek has been a faculty member with the University of Maryland, School of Dentistry for more than 15 years. He is a licensed dentist with expertise in epidemiology and health policy and administration. His published works have focused on dental caries surveillance, health disparities, and access to care. Currently, he serves as Co-PI for a $2.7 million, NIDCR-sponsored grant exploring the links between health literacy, healthcare decision-making, and oral health status. Dr. Macek is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health. Kathy Ruben, PhD Candidate in Health Services Administration Research Assistant, and recipient of the Rima E. Rudd Fellowship in Health Literacy, sponsored by the Herschel S. Horowitz Center for Health Literacy University of Maryland School of Public Health. Kathleen Ruben is a doctoral candidate in Health Services Administration at the University of Maryland, School of Public Health. She received a BS in Nutrition from the Pennsylvania State University and a MS in Nutrition from the University of Maryland. She has held positions as the Nutritionist for the Ocean County, NJ, Nutrition Project for the Elderly, and Director of Nutritional Services for the Brooke Grove Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Sandy Spring, Maryland. In 2005, she completed the University of Maryland, Center on Aging, Graduate Gerontology Certificate Program. Research interests include access to health care for older adults, and health disparities in minority elders. Rima E. Rudd, ScD, MSPH Senior Lecturer on Health Literacy, Education, and Policy Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Harvard School of Public Health Dr. Rima Rudd is a member of the faculty in Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Harvard School of Public Health. Her teaching, research studies, and policy work are focused on health disparities and literacy related barriers to health programs, services, and care. She serves on multiple US committees addressing health literacy and is engaged in research and policy projects in North America, Europe, and Australia. She has written and contributed to multiple health policy reports, white papers, and research studies. Rima Rudd is considered a leader in the field and has won multiple awards for her work. Norman Tinanoff, DDS University of Maryland, Dental School Dr. Norman Tinanoff received his dental degree from the University of Maryland in After receiving his certificate and Master s Degree in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Iowa, he spent another year at the VA Hospital in Iowa City in a research fellowship. Dr. Tinanoff's two-year military service was at the Army Institute of Dental Research at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. For 23 years he was at the University of Connecticut Health Center where he was director of the Pediatric Dentistry graduate program for 16 years. In 1999, he became Chairman of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Maryland. In 2003 he became Chairman of the Department of Health Promotion and Policy, which includes Pediatric Dentistry, Dental Hygiene, Community Dentistry; and the graduate program in Advanced General Dentistry. In 2012 he reduced his role to Division Chief of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Tinanoff has authored or co-authored over 160 publications, primarily on fluoride mechanisms, antimicrobials, caries risk factors, early childhood caries and prevention. Recent books/monographs include: The Oral Cavity in Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics, 4

5 Use of Fluorides, in Early Childhood Oral Health and Maryland Oral Health Summit: Pathways to Common Ground and Action in the Journal Public Health Dentistry. His current interests are concerned with preventing dental caries and oral health access for underserved children. John Welby, MS Director, Oral Health Literacy Campaign Office of Oral Health, Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene For more than 30 years John has worked in the health care industry creating compelling, results driven and award winning health care communication. He is skilled in communication design, creative development, marketing, advertising, media relations, health literacy and social marketing. He obtained his MS in Communication from Clarion University and has crafted communication, advertising and education materials for hospitals and health care organizations throughout the nation, including the Indiana University School of Medicine and The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. John currently works to direct the Maryland Oral Health Literacy Campaign, Healthy Teeth, Healthy Kids, for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Maryland Dental Action Coalition. John has been recognized by his peers as an expert communicator winning more than 30 national and international awards for his work. He believes that communicating about health is a privilege and advocates for truth and understanding in all health care communication. 5
