1 Computer System Information Century School District Daniel E. Cook Account Log On There are various ways to log on to the school s server. Each one has a unique reason. Teacher Log On Teacher Log On should only be used by the teacher. Students should NOT have access to a computer logged-on using a teacher s account. Teachers using their account will have access to the grade book program and be able to save documents and files in a secure location on the server. This allows for the use of Roaming Profiles discussed later in this document. The teacher Log On is the first letter of your first name and your entire last name. No spaces or capital letters. You should have a distinctive password for your account. This can be changed at any time by pressing ctrl-alt-del after logging on and then selecting Change Password. Another advantage for using your account is the ability of using a POP3 . You can setup your Century account using Outlook or Outlook Express. To do this, start the program and add an account using your information. In addition to your username and password, you will need to use the following information: POP3: century.pulski.k12.il.us SMTP: century.pulski.k12.il.us By logging on using your teacher account, you are logging on to the computer as a local administrator. There are two task which require this type of log on: 1. Computer Maintenance (This will be discussed later in this document.) 2. Software installation Remember to log off before students are allowed on the computer.

2 Student Log On (in the Classroom) Students should log on to classroom computers using either their username/password (3 rd -6 th ), or the username of classroom with no password. As for taking AR tests, the classroom log on is recommended. Student Log On (in the lab) Students in the lab for Computer Class will know how to log on. For students taking AR tests they should log on using the username of lab with no password. Should you take your students into the lab for a project, 3 rd -6 th grade students may log on using student username and password to allow for saving and Roaming Profiles. Log Off It is important that computers are logged off when not in use and before leaving for the day. An exception would be using the username of classroom for AR use. However, before leaving for the day, please make sure you log off. This is not only done for security, but also for backup purposes. The server does a complete tape backup daily. If computers are not logged off, this may prevent some file from being properly backed up. Roaming Profiles A roaming profile is a user profile that is saved on the server. That user profile follows the user to any computer the user logs onto. In other words, the files and setting of a user will be available on any computer that is logged onto. Therefore, it is important to save documents either to your server file or to a removable media. It is recommended NOT to save your files on the local machine. Server File This file is located on drive z. This can be accessed by going to save as in your application and selecting drive z:. (your username will follow the z:). Another way is by opening My Computer. Drive z: will be located there. Removable Media Removable media would include floppy discs, CD-Rs, and jump/thumb drives. These devices can then be stored or taken to other computers.

3 Weekly Maintenance It is important for the computer network and for the individual computer to keep Windows updated. Therefore, perform Windows update at least once a week. Before beginning, Log On as a Local Administrator by using your teacher account. Follow the four steps. (Taken from Installing Windows Updates (4 simple steps) 1. Open Internet Explorer. From the menu, click Tools >> Windows Update. 2. Once at the Windows Update site, click Express Install. This will scan your computer for High Priority Updates.

4 3. When scanning is complete, click Install Updates in the top left corner. You may be required to restart your computer after the updates are installed. 4. Repeat steps 1-3 until no critical updates remain.

5 Monthly Maintenance It is important for the computer network and for the individual computer to keep virus and ad/spyware free. In order for this to happen, it is important to perform the following scans once a month. These scans can be started when leaving school for the night. My recommendation is to do one of the scans on two consecutive days. Symantec Anti-virus Full Scan This scan is already on your computer. 1. From the Start menu, select 'All Programs', select 'Symantec Client Security', and then select 'Symantec Antivirus'. 2. Click 'Scan' on the menu bar and select 'Full Scan'. 3. Click 'Scan'. 4. When the scan is complete, close all windows. Spybot This scan can be downloaded the first time from my website. ( In the left margin, click on the Teacher s Resources link. Then select Spybot and run. This will download and install the program. Directions for using Spybot: 1. Click on Start Programs Spybot Search and Destroy 2. ok 3. Check for Updates, then install if any 4. Check for problems 5. When finished, Fix Problems Printers Classrooms are provided with printers for general classroom use. For larger print jobs such as weekly grades, you may send the job to the lab printer by selecting the HP LaserJet 4250 PCL6. This is a new industrial printer and will do a much better job than the old one.

6 Extra lab In the High School end of the building is the teaching computer lab. This lab is equipped with computers running Microsoft Office and has Internet access. Classes may reserve times for research/educational projects. Additional Assistance Please ask if you have any questions or problems.
