NATURA AND BRAZILIAN BIODIVERSITY The risk of extinction of biodiversity assets is a major threat to life on the planet. By integrating the sustainable use of biodiversity assets and a respect for traditional regional and local cultures into our technology platform, we have decided to contribute to the balanced use of these natural resources. We encourage production using sound agroforestry practices, the creation of community development funds, the establishment of fair price value chains and remuneration for traditional knowledge.
TIMELINE NATURA IN THE AMAZON Use of Brazilian biodiversity assets Start of relationships with communities Increase in R&D on oilseed species in the Amazon region First benefits sharing contract Soap factory in Benevides Expansion of the local development project in extractivist communities Development of the Amazon Project begins
PRIORITY SUSTAINABILITY TOPICS 2009 Materiality Matrix Amazon Water
OUR OUTLOOK ON THE REGION We view the Amazon region as key to the development of Brazil; We appreciate the significance that the Amazon represents for future generations; We want to participate actively in the creation of development proposals for the region, together with government, communities, NGOs, academia and other civil society groups.
OUR INSPIRATION The Victoria Amazonica is a species of aquatic pant from the equatorial region of the Amazon. Its spongy seeds, which can float, travel long distances throughout the Amazon River Basin. When they germinate far from their place of origin, the seeds of the Victoria Amazonica help create new habitats, rich in species of flora and fauna. Its capacity to generate and strengthen new relationship networks in the Amazon ecosystem is the reason we chose the Victoria Amazonica for the visual identity of the Amazon Program.
THE PROCESS OF THE AMAZON PROGRAM: 5 PHASES
VISION To be a benchmark in the creation of sustainable business through science, innovation and entrepreneurship with a focus on socio-biodiversity and on respect for the traditional knowledge and culture of the region.
