Begin the Course Course Offering Guide Types of Credit Credit Recovery (CR) courses are for students who have failed a high school course in the subject area and intend to recover the lost credit. CR courses need a 70% in EACH UNIT to earn a Pass. A Pass/Fail grade is given and does not affect a student s GPA. Regular Education (RE) offers a student the option to take a course that is an equivalent course to a semester s course. It may be graded as a letter grade or Pass/Fail. Honors (HR) offer a student the option to take a course that is an equivalent course to a semester s course. It may be graded as a letter grade or Pass/Fail. There is additional course work and therefore, an accelerated pace. Advance Placement (AP) courses meet higher-education expectations of college-level courses and prepare students to demonstrate achievement through success on the AP exams. Courses target highly motivated students who are reading at grade level or above and who have a track record of success in high school coursework. Types of Courses Online (OL) offers an impressive list of courses that span from credit retrieval to Advance Placement. AP Exam Review and College & Career Preparation courses are also available. Online libraries and tutors, digital tools, and learning resources are available to help students and parents who help students. For a description and a detailed syllabus of each course, visit Apexlearning.com. Independent Studies (IS) are based on traditional textbook curriculum and are customizable for the student s needs. These courses are excellent for independently completed credit recovery. In-Class (IC) courses provide the benefit of a small group instruction. Students are involved in learning while a certificated teacher addresses individual needs. They receive personal feedback and building connection between the student, teacher, and the content. Daily study labs are also included for a student. One-To-One (OO) provides the highest level of course customization. Weekly meetings are designed to instruct and to assess that fulfills course expectations. Daily study labs are included for a student to assure the quality and quantity of learning and assigned work. Frequently Asked Questions When can I register for courses online or independent studies? Our open registration/enrollment allows students to start when it works best for their schedule. From their start date, there are 8 weeks to complete a Credit Recovery course and 16 weeks to complete a Regular, Honors, or AP course. Open registration continues during the summer months, but most students want to finish a course before the next school year starts. Is NWLS an accredited and approved school? Yes. We are an approved private school in the State of Washington and accredited by the Northwest Accreditation Commission. Our high school courses and diplomas are approved by public and private schools as well as colleges. Many of our courses are NCAA and Higher Education and Coordinating Board (HCEB) approved. How do the grades transfer to my school? Once the course is complete, we create an official transcript that you pick up from NWLS and delivered to your school. We generally wait for you to complete all your courses for the term before generating the transcript. Official transcripts are available 2-weeks after the course completion date and after balance is paid in full and books are returned. Will my transcript list for these courses? Yes. It lists the course name, grade, and credits earned for each course. What is the refund policy for Online and Independent Studies? We have a 5-business day money back guarantee from the start date. A refund of 75% is available within the first 10 business days. No refunds are available after 10 business days. The registration fee/application fee, graduation, and course transfer fee are non-refundable. What happens if I don t finish a course by the deadline? A course extension allows student two additional weeks to complete a course after the deadline. Most students find this is sufficient time to complete a course. For each extension, the cost is $100, per course, per semester. Do I need to be present at the school to complete assignments, quizzes, or tests? No, our Online and Independent Study courses are designed for the student to work independently including tests and labs, though we do reserve the right to require any assessment to be proctored. All foreign language tests need to be taken on-site. Rev. 10/23/15-1 -

5 Academic Integrity Policy Below is a guideline of what academic misconduct includes: Plagiarism (both intentional and unintentional): Plagiarism is basically taking someone else s work and presenting it as your own. Use your TurnItIn.com account as a guideline; your originality score should not exceed 5% or 15 words. Plagiarism includes but is not limited to the following: o Copying and pasting parts of text without proper documentation o Using work from another class for a current assignment o Inadequately paraphrasing someone else s work o Improperly documenting source material o Submitting another student s work as your own o Downloading a paper or a response from a paper-mill or internet source Cheating (Cheating and Unauthorized Assistance): Cheating encompasses both the giving/distributing/selling of answers as well as the accepting/taking/stealing/buying answers. You may not use notes, smart phones, or the Internet during any quiz/test. You may not accept help during a quiz/test. Impersonation: Taking the identity of another person to give an advantage to that student. Bribery: Like cheating, applies to both the one selling and the one buying answers or exchanging service for reward. Deception: Misleading of any sort is unacceptable. This would include claiming to have submitted work or giving a false excuse for missing a deadline. Fabrication: Forging a signature, creating false data, or making up citations. Academic Misconduct is regarded as a serious offense. Many institutions of higher education expel students found guilty of this lack of integrity. The established policy is an effort to prepare all students for the future. For a full discussion of NWLS s expectations regarding Academic Integrity, please visit our website. Violation Procedure Disciplinary Actions 1 st Offense* 2 nd Offense 3 rd Offense The student and parent are contacted and, in most cases, will meet with Administration to discuss the issue.
