3 2017 Results Reflect Alabama s Economic Development Success A s governor of Alabama, nothing is more important to me than creating opportunities that allow the citizens of our great state to prosper. That s why I have made economic development a central pillar of my administration. The highpaying jobs we re creating transform lives, strengthen families and revitalize communities. To put it simply, this economic development activity enriches and advances Alabama on many levels. As the former assistant director of the Alabama Development Office (now the Department of Commerce), I got a first-hand glimpse of how strategic economic development can deliver results for our state. Today, the need is just as urgent. We have to be committed to bringing 21st Century jobs to Alabama so we can build a brighter future for our young people. I m confident that the 2017 New & Expanding Industry Report, issued today by the Alabama Department of Commerce, shows that we are on the right track. And while the results reflect considerable success, I can assure everyone that we are not about to rest on our laurels. It s more important than ever that we accelerate our efforts to create jobs and move Alabama forward. Kay Ivey Governor of Alabama 3

4 2017 Results Reflect Alabama s Economic Development Success Greg Canfield Secretary, Alabama Department of Commerce The Alabama economy is truly hitting on all cylinders today, and the work of the state s economic development team has had a lot to do with. Over the years, this team has played an instrumental role in the formation of Alabama s auto industry and in the continued growth of the aerospace and other industries. These efforts have constructed a launch pad from which we can propel Alabama s economy forward and prepare the state for the future. We re making progress and our annual report card shows it. The 2017 New & Expanding Industry Report, the full report on economic development activity in Alabama, outlines the progress we re making in bringing technology-focused jobs to the state across a robust range of industries. The report shows that Alabama s economic developers successfully worked on more than 300 projects during 2017, covering a broad range of industries and enterprises. The bottom line looks like this: Economic development projects announced last year will generate 15,465 new and future jobs for Alabama, along with new capital investment totaling $4.4 billion. Both totals exceed those for In keeping with recent years, the auto industry was a prime driver of economic growth in Alabama s four global automakers Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Hyundai and Toyota together announced additional investments topping $500 million in their facilities across the state. Significantly, Mercedes plans to open a global logistics center in Bibb County will create around 500 jobs in a rural area. The year also brought solid growth in Alabama automotive supply chain, which has been a recruitment priority for our team. Other sectors identified as key targets for recruitment in Accelerate Alabama 2.0, our updated strategic economic development growth plan, also recorded vigorous growth in Exciting new projects involving rocket engines will add thrust to Alabama s aerospace sector. Building on strong performances in 2016, Alabama s forest products and food products industries recorded high levels of new investment and job-creation activity in 2017, benefiting the state s rural areas. There were a number of notable projects involving technology companies as well. The breadth of activity fuels my optimism going forward. We ve gotten off to a blazing start in 2018, and the project pipeline still looks promising. Our top-notch workforce development programs are prepared to meet the demands of high-tech workplaces. The good news is we have the full backing of Governor Kay Ivey, who has made economic development a priority. Working together, I know we all can accomplish great things for Alabama. Greg Canfield Secretary, Alabama Department of Commerce 4
