2 Dean s Message The School of Business at Houston Baptist University offers five graduate degrees: the MBA, the MS in Human Resources Management, the MS in Management, the Master of International Business, and the Master of Accounting. Although each of these programs stands alone and is well recognized in the Houston business community, the programs complement each other. This blending of career experience, technical ability, global experience, and leadership styles enriches the discussion and provides perspectives few textbooks can capture. All of the University s graduate business programs are designed to attract individuals who are prepared to make the sacrifices necessary to reach their career goals. HBU is ideally located off Highway 59 and close to the Sam Houston Tollway, and is easily accessible from anywhere in the Houston area, just minutes from the Galleria. The evening classes allow you to pursue your degree while maintaining your career and caring for your family. You can complete the program in less than two years by dedicating two evenings a week. The program includes a travel course, at no additional cost. To give you a valuable perspective on global business we include an international trip as part of your curriculum. 5 The World is Our Classroom INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT International Management (MGMT 6395) is just one of several courses focusing on the global economy. The course, which includes a ten day foreign residency, begins with a classroom experience, which emphasizes international business issues, adapting to national cultures, and a preliminary study of companies on the itinerary for the selected destination. Classroom learning is combined with travel experience. Airfare and hotel costs are covered. This gives us the opportunity to travel with our classmates and experience business environments outside of the US. 6 Master of International Business National borders no longer constrain businesses. Cash management is done globally. The manufacturing cycle stretches from Europe to China. Human resources work on virtual teams that span the continents. Investment capital is found in China, New York, Japan, and Europe. Import/export activities must deal with terrorism. Marketing adapts global products to local markets. International managers, like managers of domestic companies, face the usual HR, finance, marketing, operations, and strategy issues. The international manager, however, faces all these problems along international dimensions different accounting practices, different national cultures, contrasting socioeconomic systems, different systems of law and corporate governance, different attitudes toward terrorism, differing labor markets, different approaches to capital markets and the role of government, and different understanding of intellectual property concepts. HBU s Master of International Business will equip you with the skills, knowledge, and experiences needed to be a manager in international business. The MIB is a 18-to-24-month program in which every course deals with international business. If you work in a company that has international operations, you should consider the HBU MIB. It has the following distinctives: Students must demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language. Besides MBA-type courses, students take interdisciplinary courses in Political Economics, Culture, and International Organizations. All students take an international trip to study business in foreign countries. Program has a lockstep structure, with all courses focused on international business. Cohort-based study groups and project teams greatly help the learning process. A new MIB cohort is admitted once a year, in the fall semester, and advances through the program together, taking the same courses on the same schedule. Classes are held twice a week, on either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/ Thursday. Each class meeting is held in the evening from 6:00 to 10:00 pm. 6

7 The MIB provides students with the specialized knowledge that is needed in global companies cross-cultural communications, international law, international finance, global economics, and many other disciplines. This is a lockstep program, with no electives. The program length is hours, depending on the student s undergraduate degree. Submit Three Letters of Professional Recommendation. Recommenders should submit the completed forms directly to the Graduate School via mail, fax, or the forms to gradadmissions@hbu.edu. 4. Provide a Current Resume. Mail resume to the Graduate School or your resume to gradadmissions@hbu.edu. The decision to admit an applicant is based on an evaluation of GPA, work experience, the candidate s potential to be successful in the graduate program, and his or her ability to add to the perspective of the class.
