BasicTerminology UAV- Unmanned Aerial Vehicle UAS- Unmanned Aerial System RPA- Remotely Piloted Aircraft Bum s definition: Flying things without a person in it! Wikipedia Definition: An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), also known as a drone, is an aircraft without a human pilot on board. Its flight is controlled either autonomously by computers in the vehicle or under the remote control of a pilot on the ground or in another vehicle. The typical launch and recovery method or "Pop and Stop" of an unmanned aircraft is by the function of an automatic system or an external operator on the ground. [1]

From Military to Domestic Applications Two commonly asked questions? 1. What are the benefits of employing Unmanned Aerial Systems verses using Manned Platforms? 2. How can this new technology be used to benefit the Civilian World? Manned Unmanned VS
Benefits of UAS Technologies The best and most concise answer comes from a company called AUVSI (Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International) The Benefits of Unmanned Aircraft Systems UAS provide a host of societal benefits that make our citizens safer, more secure and more productive. These aircraft help police, fire and other first responders save lives in the event of natural disasters, locate missing children and help fight wildfires. They assist the Coast Guard in rescue missions and help the Border Patrol keep our nation secure. They boost agricultural production and allow us to better protect the environment. Moreover, UAS have virtually no limitations, with the ability carry out such work in hazardous conditions, darkness, extreme heat, and a host of other conditions that may pose significant risks to manned aircraft. 14 Department of Fish and Game photo Bob DeGross Unmanned aerial vehicles and thermal imaging NPS has been working with USGS and the University of Florida to test small, remotely operated airplanes and heatdetecting sensors for use in detecting pythons in the Everglades. These technologies may be useful to detect and aid in the capture of pythons in their natural habitats.
Mining Industry The primary use of aircraft within the mining industry is for exploration; to map out tracts of distant terrain and to explore for potential mineral deposits. The nature of such missions makes the use of UAVs a natural fit, but that is not the only area of mining operations in which unmanned aircraft excel. UAVs are also cost effective. Without the maintenance and staffing costs of helicopters and light aircraft, UAVs are cheaper to run and require less to launch, mobilize, set up, relocate and refuel.
Border Patrol Border Patrol uses unmanned aerial vehicles to patrol Southwest Borders to spot illegal immigrants, and drug smugglers.
Agriculture RMAX UAS helicopter has been servicing crops in Asia for almost 20 years! Manufactured by Yamaha. The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International predicted high demand for agriculture drones that will be able to spray crops with herbicide and pesticide and offer access to cheap, timely data on crop health.
Search and Rescue UAS A search and rescue drone is an unmanned aircraft used by emergency responders, such police officers and firefighters, ideal for searching vast areas for missing persons and crime victims in need of rescue. Qube The Canberra-built drone flew over the search area 1.5 x 3 km and successfully located the Outback Joe dummy.

Government Agencies/Law Enforcement 1. Privacy issues center around unauthorized surveillance and collection of data 2. Criminal Search Warrants can legally authorize the use of UAS technologies 3. Advanced technologies such as Thermal Energy Camera s bring into question the ability of the average citizen s right to maintain privacy while urban drones exploit these type of technologies. Too intrusive? Lawyers will continue to debate this issue.
FAA Concerns for UAS Operations in NAS (3 Obstacles) 1. Sense and Avoid. With reduced visibility from a camera pod, what technologies and procedures will remedy this midair collision safety concern? 2. Develop Frequency Securities to prevent against hackers or possible Terrorist events. What class of UAS must possess this secure technology? 3. How can UAS operations take place without compromising Privacy rights of US Citizens?
UAS Economic Outlook for America? 1. Unmanned Aerial technologies are expected to become a $90 billion industry within the next decade and to create 100,000 high-paying American jobs along the way (National Journal, April 13, 2013) 2. AUVSI s findings show that in the first three years of integration more than 70,000 jobs will be created in the United States with an economic impact of more than $13.6 billion. This benefit will grow through 2025 when we foresee more than 100,000 jobs created and economic impact of $82 billion. (AUVSI Economic Report 2013) 3. "It truly is an opportunity in our state for our citizens and students to be on the ground floor of something that is going to part of the future of aviation in our country," said Sandoval, who expects it will mean up to $2.5 billion in economic impact and another $125 million in state and local tax revenue.
