2 Expand CTE Health Science opportunities to comprehensive high schools currently not offering such programs Enable secondary students to obtain college credits for high school courses. To provide school districts with a means to access standardized curricula to develop a Health Services/Allied Health/Health Sciences, General (CIP Code ) program of study (POS). Five CTE course curriculum have been developed by UMDNJ and Union County Vocational school. Existing curricula have been cross walked with Standard 9.4 and the Common Core Standards for Mathematics Enable school districts download and utilize in their classrooms. This year, they are developing Anatomy and Physiology I and II to add to the list.

3 Advisory Board Currently consists of 32 members Representatives of business and industry in the health care fields, educators from secondary and postsecondary, local and state officials Meet twice annually in the spring and the fall Advise on academic and skills demanded by profession and employers Advise on professional development needs as well Met In December and will meet again on May 16, 2012

4 NJ Health Science Career Cluster website: Gloucester County Community College developed a New Jersey Health Science Career Cluster website to provide resources to health science educators, parents and students in New Jersey through the Career and Technical Education Partnership (CTEP) Grant Program.

5 Pilot Opportunity As part of this exciting initiative, Gloucester County College is inviting secondary school districts in New Jersey to pilot the model Health Services/Allied Health/Health Sciences, General (CIP Code ) program of study in the fall of 2012, and to use the curricula developed through this initiative. The curricula were crosswalked with Standard 9.4 and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJCCCS), and will be cross-walked with the Common Core Standards in 2012.

6 The following courses are aligned with UMDNJ curricula: Medical Terminology Community Health Dynamics of Health Care (must be taught) Fundamentals of Health and Wellness Emergency and Clinical Care Coming in June: Anatomy & Physiology I & II

7 Curricula The existing curriculum and the two currently under development were developed together by the University of Dentistry and Medicine of New Jersey and Union County Vocational School The existing curricula are aligned with UMDNJ curricula

8 Secondary school districts piloting the program of study will receive a sub-grant of $2,000 from Gloucester County College for each course (up to a maximum of three courses) they offer to students for college credit. Those school districts implementing a coherent sequence of two or more courses will be given preference over school districts implementing one course. School districts will receive funding based upon established selection criteria, and the availability of Perkins grant funds

10 Teacher Requirements Additionally, teachers must be certified to teach the program courses and meet the faculty appointment requirements set by UMDNJ-SHRP in order for students to earn college credit for successfully completing courses in this program of study. Teachers must also attend professional development workshops offered during the grant year by OCTE, Gloucester Community College (through the CTEP Grant), and UMDNJ (if required).

11 The Subgrant Narrative must be submitted to the CTEP Project Director, Bob Berezny no later than June 15, 2012 in order to be considered as a subgrantee of the CTEP Grant Program for the grant period September 1, August 31, Please contact Bob Berezny or Dr. Connie Walde with any questions or concerns. 12 Additionally, the curricula were aligned with courses offered by the University of Medicine and Dentistry (UMDNJ), and students who successfully complete the courses will receive dual credit from UMDNJ. Course curricula developed for the Health Services/Allied Health/Health Sciences, General (CIP Code ) include: Medical Terminology (3 credits); Dynamics of Health Care in Society (3 credits); Anatomy & Physiology I (4 credits); Anatomy & Physiology II (4 credits); Emergency & Clinical Care (2 credits); and, Fundamentals of Health and Wellness (3 credits). Revised program curricula will be available for downloading by no later than August, 2012 from the Health Science Career Cluster Website: ( ion/programofstudycurricula.cfm)

13 Pilot Project Process If your school district is interested in piloting the Health Services/Allied Health/Health Sciences, General program of study, please submit a Subgrant Narrative describing activities that will be completed during the grant period relating to the programmatic elements identified on page two of the invitation, and identify the coherent sequence of three or more courses students will complete in the Health Services/Allied Health/Health Sciences, General program of study.

14 ***Secondary school districts requesting funds to develop a new Health Services/Allied Health/Health Sciences, General CTE program of study must first apply for program approval before operating the program of study at the school district. Districts will be required to submit data to the NJDOE on a yearly basis. 15 Grant Period The grant period will begin September 1, 2012 and ends August 31, Secondary school districts participating in the pilot program will become subgrantees of Gloucester County College and receive funding if they implement the programmatic elements listed below.

16 Step in Developing a Program of Study: Use the curricula developed through this initiative and aligned with UMDNJ; Develop a Health Services/Allied Health/Health Sciences, General (CIP Code ) program of study consisting of a coherent sequence of three or more courses for which at least one or more of the courses are offered to students for college credit. If the program of study you are developing does not include a coherent sequence of three courses for which students can earn college credit (for three separate college courses), the remaining course(s) developed by the school district must be cross-walked with Standard 9.4, the NJCCCS, and the Common Core Standards;

17 Arrange for students to attend the Statewide Health Science Careers College Fair offered by UMDNJ to educate the students about the various health career options that exist, and provide students with admission requirements and the courses they will need to take to qualify for admittance into secondary school Health Science programs;

18 Develop articulation agreements with UMDNJ and a local community college (if possible) for the courses selected; Develop an advisory board to promote and sustain the program of study; and, Develop a marketing plan must be in place to promote and sustain the program of study. 19 Professional Development In July of 2011 three days of professional development were held at Mercer County College Training for educators provided on: Project Based Learning Integrating Technology into 21 st Century Teaching How student s self-assessments improve their cognitive growth In February 2012, three days of workshops with Achieve; Integrating Core Curriculum State Standards for Math into Health Science Curricula In July 2012 planned One day workshop on Equity and Diversity in Health Science Education Tow day workshop on Project Based Learning with the Health Science Curriculum.
