COURSE CONTENT: Introduction to the Study of Adolescent Development Biological, Cognitive, and Social Transitions in Adolescence The Contexts of Families, Peers, Schools, Work, Leisure, and the Mass Media in Adolescence Psychosocial Development During Adolescence, to include Identity, Autonomy, Intimacy, Sexuality, Achievement, and Psychosocial Problems in Adolescence STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES / PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: Course Objectives: While this course is designed to introduce you to the physical, emotional, social and mental factors of growth and development of the individual in adolescence, our college's commitment goes beyond simply providing you with an overview of the subject matter. You will have the opportunity to develop and expand your general attitudes, skills, and knowledge. It is my hope and desire that upon completion of this course, you will have developed a commitment to lifelong learning and wellness; an improvement in your ability to communicate, cooperate, and collaborate with others effectively; and an understanding of the various ways in which you can use psychological science to investigate and interpret your world. Student Learning Outcomes: *Understand the basic concepts, methods and theories in the study of adolescent growth and development *Have a working understanding of the physical, cognitive and socioemotional aspects of adolescence *Relate your learning to current events and personal goals and experiences

4 Page 4 of 7 Effective Spring Term 2010, student absences will be recorded from the first day the class meets. Regular and punctual attendance in all classes and laboratories, day and evening, is required. Students who are absent for any reason should always consult with their instructors. Course syllabi must provide specific information regarding attendance, including, for courses involving the internet, online activity that constitutes "attendance." Also, both tardiness and early departure from class may be considered forms of absenteeism. In all cases, students will be held responsible for completion of course requirements covered in their absence. Additionally, it is the student's responsibility to drop a course for nonattendance. Course instructors establish policy with regard to attendance in their respective syllabi and may drop a student for excessive absences. Absences are considered excessive when more than 12.5 percent of the total contact hours of instruction in a semester, including lecture and lab, are missed. For example, in a three-credit-hour lecture class, students may be dropped after more than six contact hours of absences. In a four-credit-hour lecture/lab class, students may be dropped after more than eight contact hours of absences. Absences are counted regardless of whether they occur consecutively. In special programs with additional accreditation or certification standards, additional attendance requirements may be enforced but faculty must clearly explain these policies in their syllabi. Students who stop attending class for any reason should contact the instructor and the college registrar to officially withdraw from the class. Students may be required to consult with an advisor or designee before dropping. Failure to officially withdraw may result in a failing grade for the course. It is the student's responsibility to withdraw officially from a class by submitting a completed Withdrawal Form to the Admissions and Records Office. ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTOR REQUIREMENTS: As outlined above, there are four main components of this course: Discussions/Group Work (due each Wednesday and worth 30% of your grade), Assignments (due each Sunday and worth 45% of your grade), Quizzes/Assessments (due each Sunday and worth 15% of your grade) and a Final Exam (worth 10% of your grade). Coursework will generally be graded within four days following each due date. Discussions/Group Work: The topics in this course will be discussed and groups will work on activities related to the respective topics. These weekly assignments are posted on the discussion board and are due by Wednesday at midnight. Replies are due by Sunday at midnight for credit. Participation in each discussion/group project is worth up to two points toward your course grade. Prepare for this work by reading the assigned chapter(s) and be ready to discuss the topic(s) to be covered. Opinions alone are insufficient. Always support your work with text and/or other quality research (i.e., journal articles). Assignments: Questions are posted in the "assignments" section of the course, on the course menu toolbar. Responses to the questions are to be submitted in the submission box on the Assignments page or as an attachment in Word or text format and are due by midnight each due date. Please use a format that is easy to open on any computer. Save and submit your document as "rich text format" if you are uncertain about the format. Each assignment is worth up to three points toward your course grade. Cite all references in APA format. Opinions alone are

5 Page 5 of 7 insufficient. Always support your responses with text and/or other quality research (i.e., journal articles), unless otherwise specified. Quizzes/Assessments: You have one quiz per week with 20 questions each. The quizzes are accessible by clicking on the Assessments link on the course menu toolbar. Refer to the assigned chapter(s) to answer the questions. The quizzes are open book and untimed. I encourage you to take your time to be sure you are confident with the answers you submit. You are allowed two attempts and both grades will be averaged, so it is important that you do your best on both. Your grade along with correct answers, as applicable, will be available for your review following submission. Final Exam: The final exam includes a set of five questions that cover material from various aspects of adolescence. It is worth up to 10 points toward your course grade and is accessible on the Assignments page of the course. Cite all references in APA format. Opinions alone are insufficient. Always support your responses with text and/or other quality research (i.e., journal articles), unless otherwise specified. Time Commitment: You are expected to devote a sufficient amount of time to your efforts in this course. The standard recommendation is two hours of study time for each hour of class. For each three-hour course, this equates to six hours out of class. Each person's needs are different, so I encourage you to budget your time according to your needs and grade expectation. Late Work Policy: Discussions, quizzes and the final exam may not be submitted late. A zero will be given for unsubmitted work. Assignments may be submitted late for up to half credit. Drop Date: Students may drop this class without academic penalty by Wednesday, February 2, A "W" will appear on your record if you drop after this date and before the last day to withdraw, Monday, April 18, VCT students need to refer to their respective college requirements. Psychology Club: Are you interested in psychology or maybe even a career in psychology? Then you need to join the Psychology Club at NVC! Come meet and learn with other students (and faculty!) who share your interests in this exciting field! Your membership gives you the opportunity to engage in research, attend conferences, meet professionals from various fields, raise funds for the Club, participate in NVC campus activities, and get practical knowledge and experience through interaction with community organizations. You do NOT need to be a psychology major to join, and you may join at anytime during the semester. The only requirements for membership are current enrollment at NVC and a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA. 6 Page 6 of 7 COLLEGE REQUIREMENTS: A comprehensive final evaluation, not to exceed three hours in length, shall be given at the end of each course at the official scheduled final exam time. Any exceptions to this requirement must be approved by the appropriate Dean. Other evaluations are given at the discretion of the instructor. A student who must be absent from a final evaluation should petition that instructor for permission to postpone the evaluation. A student absent without permission from a final evaluation is graded "0" on the exam.
