1 DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMS One of the special features of Brown s MSW program is the opportunity to seek degrees in two professions at the same time. A dual-degree program always takes longer to complete than a conventional MSW program. Each school participating in these joint-degree programs honors its basic requirements while making accommodations for those who choose to earn two degrees. To enter a dual-degree program, you must apply separately and be admitted to each school. At the successful conclusion of the dual-degree program, you receive degrees from both institutions. 1

10 SOCIAL WORK AND JEWISH STUDIES The George Warren Brown School of (Brown) at Washington University, in conjunction with the Washington University Program in Jewish, Islamic and Near Eastern Studies (JINES), offers students the opportunity to obtain a Master of and a Master of Arts degree in Jewish Studies. The dual degree program is designed for students who are primarily interested in careers within the Jewish community that stress the integration of social work knowledge, values and skills with studies in the Jewish community, Hebrew and Judaism. Through a course of study, students are able to prepare for a wide variety of career opportunities in community leadership, social policy/advocacy, group services, program development, and direct practice. Graduates are prepared to become leaders in the Jewish community. Students admitted to the program complete 60 credits in the MSW program and 30 in the MAJS program. The foundation course, American Jewish Community, will provide a comprehensive overview of the development and structure of the contemporary American Jewish community and the field of Jewish communal service. Students will have the opportunity to complete the foundation practicum at one of the local Brown School affiliated Jewish agencies (as part of a field unit) and the concentration practicum in Israel. Given the wide range of choices, MSW/MAJS students can also select from among the 5 concentration (and the individualized option) areas offered and complete a specialization. 10

12 SOCIAL WORK AND BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION The dual degree program in and Business Administration began in In this three-year program of studies, students earn a Master in degree and a Master in Business Administration degree. The program's basic goal is to prepare students for advanced social work practice with specialized business management skills and knowledge. The George Warren Brown School of and the John M. Olin School of Business developed this program for (1) social work students who want to draw upon the School of Business for the technical aspects of business administration and its functional areas -- accounting, marketing, finance, and operations management -- to complement advanced training in social work and (2) business students who seek to emphasize social and interpersonal aspects of business administration such as employee relations and community resources. The areas for which this dual preparation is most valuable are administration of social services and human resource management. Students in the program enroll for approximately three semesters in social work and approximately three semesters in business. Students are required to complete 51 credit hours in the School of Business and in the School of. The School of Business recognizes 15 credit hours of courses from the School of for the MBA Degree, and the School of recognizes 12 credit hours of courses from the School of Business for the MSW degree. Brown treats the 12 credit hours of course work in the School of Business as electives. Electives that Brown recognizes from the School of Business include: Financial Accounting, Marketing Management, Macro-Economics, Computer Concepts, and Programming. In the dual degree program in and Business Administration, students may start in either school, but they are advised to begin in. To date there are ten graduates. Their career paths have taken them in different directions: administration and planning positions in metropolitan social welfare planning agencies, consultant to public sector agencies, assistant administrator for a religiously based social service agency, volunteer coordinator for an AIDS multi-service agency, human research manager in a for-profit company, and teaching policy at the University level. 12

14 SOCIAL WORK AND LAW In cooperation with the Washington University School of Law, Brown was the first school of social work to implement a dual master degree program in social work and law. The program began in Students from this program earn the Master in and the Doctor of Jurisprudence degrees. The program of studies is four years. The basic goal of the social work and law program is to prepare students with combined skills in both social work and law for advanced practice with complex social and legal issues in areas where law and social work converge. Some of the areas in which dual degree knowledge and skills are necessary are community development, housing and rehabilitation, mental health, criminal and juvenile justice administration, family mediation, and legal aid to the poor. Students enrolled in the George Warren Brown School of and the School of Law spend five semesters in the School of Law and three in the School of. Students may begin their studies in either school. Students take a total of 76 hours in law and 48 hours in social work. The School of Law recognizes nine credit hours of courses from the School of for the JD degree, and the School of recognizes twelve credit hours of courses from the School of Law for the MSW degree. GWB treats the 12 hours from the School of Law as electives from such courses as: Legal Research, Constitutional Law, Ethics, Family Law, Problems of the Mentally Ill, and Social Legislation. Although the majority of JD/MSW students pursue an individualized concentration for their studies in the School of, they are required to fulfill the same degree requirements that apply to all students in the MSW program. All practicum credit hours are earned through the School of. 14
