2 Purpose Memorandum of Agreement for a Dual Degree Program Master of Business Administration, North Carolina State University Juris Doctor, Campbell University This agreement is to define the terms for students to obtain dual Juris Doctor (JD) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees from Campbell University and North Carolina State University, respectively, on the conditions that they fulfill the degree requirements of both institutions. This agreement does not create a new degree or a joint degree; rather, it articulates the terms for both schools accepting transfer credits which are applied toward JD and MBA degrees at Campbell University and NC State, respectively. Overview and Justification NC State University s Master of Business Administration (MBA) program is located within the Jenkins Graduate School of Management. The MBA is a professional degree that provides students with leadership and management skills that will allow them to advance in a professional career in management. NC State s MBA curriculum is accredited by AACSB International. The Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University prepares its graduates to successfully serve their communities with legal skill, ethical conviction, and intellectual leadership. The School of Law develops lawyers who possess moral conviction, social compassion, and professional competence, and who view the law as a calling to serve others and create a more just society. The School of Law awards the Juris Doctor (JD) degree and is accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA). Both NC State University and Campbell University are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS). The JD/MBA is a popular dual degree arrangement around the country. It promotes integration of the fields of Business Administration and law in furtherance of careers in public service. The dual degree program enables students to earn both degrees in four years of full-time study, rather than the usual five. Recipients of the JD/MBA have attained professional credentials for a diverse range of careers in business, finance, law, government, nonprofit organizations, teaching, and research. The program of study is flexible and individualized to provide each student with the best feasible combination of these two disciplines. Students completing the JD/MBA will be well positioned to contribute to effective governance in North Carolina, adding capacity to identify and solve problems facing the state and its communities. The JD/MBA exploits an opportunity created by the School of Law s move from Buies Creek to Raleigh in August The School of Law s new downtown Raleigh location will make the JD/MBA convenient for program participants: the programs will be physically housed literally minutes from one another, separated by only a couple miles on Hillsborough Street. Such proximity makes the partnership a natural one. 2

3 Application and Admission Requirements Prospective students must first be granted separate admission into both programs. This entails submitting all required application materials and meeting the admission standards of both programs. For example, applicants will be required to take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) for admission to the School of Law; the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) is required for admission into the MBA program. Upon admission, a dual degree enrollment form, approved by both programs, must be executed. Candidates admitted into the dual degree program will normally take their first year in Campbell University s Wiggins School of Law. However, students already in their first year of the MBA program may reverse this admissions procedure if they are admitted into the School of Law for the subsequent year. Similarly, students already in their first year of law school may apply for admission into the MBA program. During the third and fourth years, students will divide their studies between the two programs to maximize course availability and choices. Degree Requirements This arrangement applies only to the full-time MBA program at NC State, not the parttime program. The JD requires completion of 90 credits, 81 of which must be courses from the School of Law, including 67 hours of the required curriculum. The full-time MBA program requires completion of 56 credits, 44 of which must be in Business Administration courses (including 3 of required core courses and a 12 hour concentration). MBA electives and specialization courses may be taken in the School of Law or in the MBA program. Approval of Course Credits for Transfer Course credits transferred from the School of Law to NC State and from NC State to the School of Law must be deemed equivalent. The transferred courses and credits shall be reviewed by the directors of the degree programs and shall be approved by the graduate/law school dean, respectively. It will be up to the institution offering a course to ensure that the instructor has appropriate credentials. Grades and Class Ranks Grade point averages for both programs are calculated independently by the School of Law and the Graduate School at NC State. Dual degree students must satisfy the School of Law s minimum academic standards for completion of the JD degree. MBA 3

4 coursework accepted for JD credit is assigned a pass or fail grade. In order for individual MBA class credits to be counted towards the JD degree, the School of Law requires a 3.0 grade point average or better. Consistent with NC State s policy on transfer credit, the Graduate School requires a minimum grade of 3.0 (or its substantive equivalent) on law school coursework counted toward the MBA degree. As is the case with all transfer credit, law school credits transferred to NC State for a JD/MBA student s plan of work will not be calculated into the student s NC State grade point average. Graduation Requirements Granting of JD/MBA Degrees. In order to obtain dual degrees from NC State and Campbell, a student must satisfy all the degree requirements for NC State s MBA degree and Campbell s JD degree. Upon satisfactory completion of all degree requirements of both schools (including completion of 44 credit hours of MBA coursework and 81 credit hours of JD coursework), the student is granted both the JD and MBA degrees. Students will be granted two separate degrees: the JD from Campbell and the MBA from NC State. The student is eligible to attend graduation ceremonies at either or both schools. Failure to Complete JD/MBA Requirements. The JD/MBA dual degrees are granted only upon successful completion of all coursework and examinations. If a student finds it impossible to complete the law component, he or she can complete an MBA degree according to the requirements established by the College of Management and receive only the MBA degree. School of Law credit given for MBA coursework is provisional upon completion of the dual degree program. Registration and Tuition The student will pay full tuition and fees at the university in which he or she is registered each semester. In semesters in which the student is registered in both universities, tuition and fees will be billed by each university according to the courses registered for. Students will be considered full time when their combined enrollment from both institutions equals 9 or more credit hours. The registrars of both institutions will coordinate to ensure students are properly classified (e.g., full time/part time; good standing) for purposes of financial aid, demonstrating continuous enrollment, and the like. Rules and Regulations Dual-degree students shall comply with all rules, regulations, and requirements of both NC State University and Campbell University. 4

5 Academic Advising Dual-degree students will be assigned academic advisors from both the Law School and the MBA program. Student Services Dual-degree students shall have access to all the services that are available to students in the host institution, including but not limited to library, health, and career placement services. Effective Date, Renewal, Termination, and Amendment of the Agreement This agreement will take effect for the Fall 2011 semester. It is valid for five years, and will be automatically renewed after the initial five-year period, unless it is otherwise stated in writing one year prior to the end of the five-year period. Upon the provision of six months notice to the other party, either party may terminate the agreement with effect from the date of an anniversary of the signing of the agreement. In the event this agreement is canceled by either party, any student who has already matriculated will be allowed to complete the JD/MBA dual degree program as specified in this agreement. 5
