2 2010 Graduation Questionnaire AAMC 2010 Graduation Questionnaire Executive Summary The Graduation Questionnaire (GQ) was established in 1978 as a method for the Association of American Medical Colleges, medical schools, and other organizations to identify and address issues critical to the future of medical education and the well being of medical students. The Graduation Questionnaire also includes information on career choice, student debt, diversity, and mistreatment. Since its creation, the GQ has been a useful tool for medical schools, the LCME, researchers, students, and faculty and its utility continues. Just as medical education has changed substantially since 1978, the GQ has changed since it was instituted and questions are reviewed annually by the GQ Advisory Group to reflect the changes in medical student education. For more information on how to add or modify a question on the GQ, please visit the AAMC s GQ website at The attached 2010 Graduation Questionnaire (GQ) All Schools Summary Report is a national report that provides aggregate data from graduating students at all LCME accredited US medical schools. The reports list where applicable five years worth of comparable data ( ). From , the GQ was separated into two distinct surveys: a program evaluation survey and a student survey on priorities in medical education. The program evaluation survey provided students with an anonymous method to inform their schools about their experiences across the years of their medical education. The student survey on priorities in medical education focused on student debt, career choice, factors supporting career choice, and diversity issues. Because the surveys were separate, students were required to log in twice to complete both surveys. The student survey was identifiable and provided researchers at the AAMC and other institutions the ability to analyze trends in student s debt and career choice over the course of their time in medical school. This information is important when speaking with congressional staff about legislation effecting student loans, support for primary care and similar issues. In 2010, the two surveys were combined into a single survey and students were able to log into the survey once using their AAMC ID Number. By combining the two surveys, the AAMC and its member institutions are now able to link data for research about clerkship experiences, primary care research, and a variety of career planning and student services topics. From , students completed the program evaluation survey first and then had the option of completing the Student Survey. Since the survey was consolidated in 2010 and students do not have to sign in twice to complete two separate surveys, the survey response for the 2010 GQ is the highest since 2002 at 83.2%, with 13,992 respondents accessing the survey. The higher response rate provides a more accurate picture of medical education experiences, career choice and student debt.
3 2010 Graduation Questionnaire AAMC As mentioned previously, the GQ questions undergo review annually and several questions were modified or added to the 2010 GQ, based on recommendations from the GQ Advisory Group. Following are the new questions in the 2010 GQ (Questions are in Bold): Basic science was integrated in required clinical experience Results show that 63.5% of the students surveyed agreed that the integration of basic science was required in their clinical experience. Did you participate in structured service learning (a structured opportunity to examine service in the context of educational goals and personal reflection)? 56.4% of the students surveyed did not participate in structured service learning. Student Programs/Activities that promote effective stress management, a balanced lifestyle and overall well being. 66.6% of the students surveyed responded that they were satisfied with the services provided. If you could revisit your career choice, would you choose to become a physician again? 83.5% responded that they would choose to become a physician again if they had the chance to revisit their career choice. Do you plan to enter into a loan forgiveness program Please list the type of loan forgiveness program you plan on participating in? 24.4 % of the students surveyed indicated that they planned to enter a loan forgiveness program. Of those indicating Yes, 44.5% of the students indicated that they plan to enter the US Department of Education Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF). Have you personally witnessed a student being mistreated during medical school? If you witnessed a student being mistreated during medical school, please identify the source? Did you report the incident (s) to a designated faculty member of the medical school administration empowered to handle such complaints? Whom did you tell about your experience(s) with witnessing mistreatment of another student? If you did not report the incident(s) of witnessed mistreatment, why or why not? 17.8% of the students surveyed witnessed mistreatment of another student. The Graduation Questionnaire does not ask what type of mistreatment was witnessed, however the source of mistreatment reported includes residents/interns, clinical faculty (in hospital), nurses, and patients.
4 Modified Questions: Which of the following assessment methods were used as part of the final evaluation/grade for the clerkships? Assessment by faculty member Assessment by resident physicians In 2010, Observation was reworded to Assessment As a result of changing the word from observation to assessment, the responses increased by the following: o Assessment by faculty member 1.2% o Assessment by resident physicians 2.2% Based on your experiences, indicate whether you agree or disagree with the following statements about medicine and the profession: I was educated about professional relationships with industry In 2010, the question changed from, I was encouraged/challenged to consider my professional relationships with pharmaceutical and other industries. to I was educated about professional relationships with industry With the modified question, the response rates changed, with 61.7% of the students agreeing with the statement vs. 76.2% in Observations: In 2009, the Graduation Questionnaire reported that total student debt of indebted students has started to show signs of leveling off. This trend has continued in 2010 with the average student debt increasing only $1004 from And for the first year, Total Debt of all students has decreased an average of $6,932. The following chart shows the trend from More information on student debt can be found on pages Total Student Debt: Source 2010 Graduation Questionnaire All Schools Summary Report
5 The perception of student mistreatment is still a concern for many students and medical schools alike. As indicated previously, the AAMC felt it necessary to not only survey those students who were mistreated, but also capture data and provide it back to schools whose students who witnessed mistreatment. In 2008, the number of students who felt they were mistreated showed signs of leveling off compared to previous years. 16.7% of the students surveyed in 2008 felt they were mistreated, which was a 2% increase from the previous year. In 2009, those numbers increased by.3% and in 2010, the number of students who felt they were mistreated decreased by.1% or 16.9% from On behalf of the AAMC we would like to thank the many medical school administrators, deans, registrars, and student groups for informing their graduates of the importance of the GQ, and the importance of the data for improving the experience of future medical students. We would also like to thank the GQ Advisory Group for their hard work and dedication in the consolidation and revision of the 2010 Graduation Questionnaire. Finally, we would like to thank the following AAMC staff: Tim Carrington, Krishna Chinta, and Phil Szenas for their support and work on the 2010 GQ survey and reports.
