Markets for Conservation & Sustainable Use of Biodiversity Maritta Koch-Weser 10th RedLAC General Assembly Belize November 10-13, 2008
The Global Exchange for Social Investment GEXSI GEXSI London 1A Birkenhead Street London WC1H 8BA United Kingdom Tel. +44 (0) Fax +44 (0) GEXSI Berlin Palais am Festungsgraben Am Festungsgraben Berlin, Germany Tel. +49 (0) Fax +49 (0)
Challenges The Global Exchange for Social Investment Continuity - Reliable Core Financing: Environmental Management & Conservation require continuous, uninterrupted finance Government & Donor programs come & go Trusts & Endowments How to build them in sufficient numbers & scale (conservation areas = almost 11% of surface of our planet) How to keep them over time Inefficiencies of Project Finance Hard & slow to get - many proposals, few successes Stop & go Administration & donor & future Carbon Investor demands Overhead Costs
Achievements The Global Exchange for Social Investment You have some of the answers New sources have been developed - but not yet at required scale Core funding Public-private endowment base (Examples: Fundacao Amazonia Sustentavel, Iwokrama, Instituto Terra, Galapagos/Darwin Foundation) Continuous supplemental sources of fundraising From environmental business e.g. ecoturism From climate business- e.g. REDDs are coming (?). Public-private partnerships /twinning Tourism fees A world of special projects & donors, GEF Command & Control + Positive fiscal Incentives.
Key Challenge The Global Exchange for Social Investment The Rat Cage Syndrome Unfriendly Competition for non-growth (or shrinking) resources by a growing number of environment players/demand centers Additionality Need to generate new, truly additional monies augmenting the available pool
Key Challenges The Global Exchange for Social Investment Outside the Cage there may be money in the market How to broaden direct engagement of Financial Sector & Citizens? From Case law to Perpetual Markets?
Perpetual Markets? The Global Exchange for Social Investment How to create markets for biodiversity & conservation At much larger scale More reliably With true additionality Citizen Based Market based With Lower Transaction Cost Greater Solidarity
Today s Agenda 1. Building a Social (& Environmental) Stock Exchange 2. Scaling up powerful, continuous Charitable Fundraising Systems?
Towards Social Stock Markets The Global Exchange for Social Investment (1)A Social (& environmental) Stock Market?
Towards Social Stock Markets The Global Exchange for Social Investment Yunus Social Stock Market? To attract investors, I propose the creation of a separate stock market, which could be called the social stock market. Only social businesses will be listed there.the existence of a public market place for trading shares in social businesses will have many benefits. It will create liquidity, making it easy for shareholders to move in and out of social investments it will raise the public profile of the social business concept, attracting even more money and energy from investors and entrepreneurs alike. Muhammad Yunus Creating a World without Poverty Social Business and the Future of Capitalism, New York, 2007, p.28
Towards Social Stock Markets The Global Exchange for Social Investment Yunus Concept & Leadership Social Businesses Have their roots in originate from - a social (and/or environmental) commitment Companies are listed in Social Stock Market (not NGOs) Shareholders make available their capital (retaining ownership of their share) Social growth & returns: Financial profit is not distributed to shareholders, but reinvested in accordance with cause Stocks rise & fall in accordance with social & financial performance
Towards Social Stock Markets The Global Exchange for Social Investment A different model: The BOVESPA Social Stock Exchange - Brazil (Live Example since 4 + years) Lists Social Enterprises & Businesses that depend on charitable donations (initially, as start-up, or in perpetuity) The Sao Paulo Stock Exchange s Foundation - Instituto BOVESPA - sponsors the operation, providing for screening & oversight Projects are funded by shares - donation investments -
Towards Social Stock Markets The Global Exchange for Social Investment Work in Progress BOVESPA to Yunus
Towards Social Stock Markets BOVESPA to Yunus 5 principles The Global Exchange for Social Investment 1. A place where programs, projects and businesses can be marketed Forseeable Pipeline 2. Where charitable & commercial investors will come routinely Forseeable Investment Flows Make it easy for Micro-finance Intermediary and Equity investors to find investible projects and programs 3. Transparent Methodologies,Criteria & Procedures Bertelsmann Foundation international exchange & design platform Global Social Stock Market project 4. Close vicinity/association with Stock Exchanges 5. A globally compatible core system, that will allow for cross-investments
Towards Social Stock Markets The Global Exchange for Social Investment A Social Stock Exchange only makes sense with new market-based financial products Market-based generation of social investment finance New style commercial products with social riders (e.g. good growth fund, Germany; Charity Bank - UK) Micro-percentages of large equity profits re-invested into micro-finance Micro-reductions in operating fees/profit margins Creative Capitalism Etc. etc.
Towards Social Stock Markets The Global Exchange for Social Investment Tandem Approach Social Stock Exchange Listing viable businesses 0.x% $ Commercial Banking & other creative Capitalism New Financial Instruments with (Micro) social riders Pre-assigned to Social Stock Market Investments
Towards Social Stock Markets The Global Exchange for Social Investment (Stock) MARKET commercial Profitable Yunus SSM London SSM Venture Capital Good Growth Fund ResponsAbility DWM Blue Orchard Blended Value Social Investment Exchanges Income earning (below market) National SSMs Social Business = Social Investment of Profits Carbon Finance /voluntary Vision Fund % Mgt. Fees Creative capitalism (PDA Thailand) Grants charity Donation dependent Programs businesses Connectors Methodology Business coaching Due diligence Charity Lotteries Rounditup WEB: Betterplace, KIVA, Global Giving CSR (e.g. Bradesco, Mariott) Sources of finance
Towards Social Stock Markets The Global Exchange for Social Investment To the uninitiated Investor Social Stock Exchanges can offer a Social Investment Fund As a managed pooled investment (and business incubator) option
Towards Social Stock Markets Social Investment Exchange Tandem Approach The Global Exchange for Social Investment Designated market & philanthropy Finance Multiple Project sources Sources: Microfinance Institutes NGOs SMEs Competitions Social Business Listings Exchange Investment Listings Incubation & Investment Fund Attached to/ Managed by Social Stock Exchange (or accredited parties) Waiver on %Fund Mgt. Fee Venture Capital Earmarked % of investment portfolio Blended Value CSR Charity Guarantee & Insurance Instruments
Social Stock Markets The Global Exchange for Social Investment Social Stock Exchanges separate Exchanges around the world 2012 Global Vision Functioning alongside some of the regular Exchanges in East and South Asia, Latin America, Africa, Europe, & North America Regular brokers engaging the business An association of lead Exchanges, acting as guardians of quality + growth over time Banking market based generation of social investment funds Cross Recognition enabling a global set of investor relationships
A Social and Environmental Stock Market for the Latin America and Carbbean Region?
Perpetual Markets? (2) Scaling up powerful, continuous Fundraising Systems? Two Examples..
Charity Lotteries Netherlands Providing core funding for Non-Profits Giving some 60 Million Euros/year for Environment Tremendous Growth Potential in Europe (theoretically up to 8 Billion Euros annually) Total donations to date: 3.2 Billion Euros from Netherlands alone Now Annually (Netherlands only) 300+ Million Euros giving Replication Potential in LAC?

Rounditup Concept: micro- donations - painless giving Can generate vast sums - voluntarily, engaging routine billing systems core funding for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) flows of funds continuous, reliable
For our discussion Specific opportunities Could Building Social Stock Exchanges gain momentum in LAC? Opportunities for Charity Lotteries? Rounditup in your country? Overlaying the pieces What can we do to make REDD and other Instruments a reality in association with Social Stock Exchanges
Rounditup? Getting started in 5 Steps Dr. Maritta Koch-Weser October 2008
5 steps towards establishing Rounditup as a middle class habit in your country
Step 1 Set out the vision, start by: 1. Calculating numbers of customers (& microdonation potential) for Key utilities (telephone, gas, electricity, water etc.) Other routine bills (credit cards, hotels, department stores, restaurants, etc.) Roundit down on some major company payrolls 2. Calculate different % of voluntary participation
Step 2 Structure Demand Form a coalition Civil Society Organizations - environmental & social Formalize a joint Rounditup Association (which may later incorporate as a non-profit Firm)
Step 3 Mapping - do your homework Precedents in micro-donations? Corporate Social Responsibility track record? Most suitable (modern) Billing Systems? Administrative & Tax aspects? Campaign Communication Solidarity rather than exclusivity? Strong feedback on effectiveness? Criteria for prequalification & sequential inclusion of beneficiaries? Accountability & transparency (donating customers will want to know their money goes straight to a chosen cause & is properly accounted for)? Possible link to Rounditup (impartial external transparency service & network)?
Step 4 Champions you want to find 1. Identify a conceptual Champion Cause oriented, charismatic, respected, influential 2. Find a private sector Champion Who helps enlist first-movers 3. Find a sponsoring PR firm Champion who helps tailor your campaign
Step 5: Approach Private Sector Companies Possibly work through Industry Associations & Business Networks Find your starting point: one or several pilot companies
Within one year you could achieve 1. A beneficiary driven national campaign 2. A center of accountability for Rounditup in your country 3. A credible feedback & transparency system 4. Private sector & customer sign up at a first, small level setting the example 5. A first goup of civil society organizations benefitting
