It owns and operates a tier III data center and a 300-kilometre fibre optic network that connects businesses throughout Jakarta. CHALLENGE When CBN decided to branch out into delivering cloud-based services, it needed a reliable platform that would enable it to bring new customers on board quickly and manage their systems efficiently. Since then it has established its reputation as a trusted ISP (internet service provider) with a range of offerings for consumer and business users. The company owns and manages 300 kilometres of fibre optic cabling that connects more than 250 buildings, offices, apartments and shopping plazas in Jakarta to global, tier-one internet providers. Its corporate customers include banking, media and e-commerce organisations. CBN also operates a state-of-the-art tier III datacenter, from which it provides traditional co-location services. Challenge Extending services to the cloud CBN s business goal was to increase revenues by branching into new service areas. To supplement its successful traditional IT and connectivity services, the company decided to start offering cloud-based services for its customers. With our existing skills and data center facilities, cloud represented a good opportunity for us to grow. To support its new cloud-based services, CBN needed a solution that would enable it to provision and manage customer workloads efficiently. With traditional hosting services, we had to source and set up new hardware and software every time we took on a new customer contract, which was time-consuming and costly, explains Hariman. For cloud services, we wanted easier scalability to enable us to provision new services faster.

The company has to adhere to stringent service level agreements (SLAs) in order to meet customer expectations and avoid penalty payments and reputational damage. It therefore needed a platform for cloud management that would enable it to safeguard customer service levels, provision new services quickly and manage IT effectively. Solution An integrated platform for cloud-based services In 2010, CBN evaluated the tools available on the market and choose CA AppLogic. We selected CA AppLogic as it integrated all cloud management functionality in a single solution and offered straightforward licensing that was tailored for service providers, says Hariman. Hariman comments, CA AppLogic enables us to implement composite business services quickly and repeatedly as well as to manage and optimise the underlying virtual machines, storage, network and the application running on it. With CA AppLogic, CBN can easily migrate customer workloads from physical environments to the cloud. Customers can utilise individual virtual servers, high availability clusters or virtual private data center that include multiple virtual devices and load balancers. Self-service infrastructure management CBN s customers administer their own systems using CA AppLogic s self-service interface. The solution enables users to provision services or add additional resources, using pre-defined appliances, which means storage, networking and security are automatically integrated and configured. Hariman comments, With the CA Technologies solution, we no longer need engineers to visit the data center and physically connect devices, instead customers can configure their infrastructures remotely via the CA AppLogic interface. The solution also features a dashboard that displays the current status of the grid, such as CPU, memory and storage utilisation. This helps CBN safeguard service levels and manage capacity. The ease of use and flexibility provided by CA AppLogic has proved to be extremely valuable for CBN and its customers. For example, during the Euro 2012 football tournament, one of CBN s customers in the media sector experienced an issue with website performance due to spikes in demand. Using CA AppLogic, CBN was able to rapidly add extra CPU and memory to the customer s system to address the issue and quickly stabilise performance.

The tournament would have been over by the time the problem was resolved.
