4 4 We came a long way... Do you know this painting? This is a world famous painting by Vincent van Gogh, called The Potato Eaters. This might come as a shock, but this was painted in the Eindhoven Region (in Nuenen). The peasant family he depicted here were very poor, dining solely on potatoes, the only crops they had. This was a rather backward, rural area, a poor region. Contrary to other parts of the Dutch Delta, the soil here was made up of sand; it was hardly fertile. There weren t any natural resources here. People had to work hard and cooperation was a necessity to make a living and basically in order to survive. Cooperation within a family, between families, with the church and with the local government. Our collaborative way of thinking is not some new found preference, it is in our culture.
