2 ABSTRACT One of the basic FDT concepts is that Frame Applications and DTMs can be deployed independently from each other. This gives end-user maximum flexibility in the choice which devices are used in an application, but also results that end-users need to find the correct DTMs in different vendor-specific websites or CDs/DVDs and install it manually on all computers. This is an error prone and time consuming task therefore FDT is often criticized. This talk presents the service distore that provides automatic deployment, installation and update of DTMs stored in the Cloud. The talk describe the underlying FDT 2 definitions and how they work in practice to make end-users life easier.

4 THE CHALLENGE FDT Frame Applications and DTMs can be deployed and installed independent from each other Initial tool installation may not contain any DTMs or only a limited set in order to reduce the size of the setup program DTM updates may be provided independent from the tool Third party DTMs may not be included in the setup program User don t want to manually search for the correct DTM / versions for a device User don t want to manually install the DTMs FDT Frame Application should support the user to find correct DTMs for devices and install them automatically

5 FDT 2 CONCEPT FOR DTM SETUP PROGRAMS DTMs are installed to target PC via a normal setup program Setup copies the necessary files to the PC and registers the DTM DTM setup programs support DTM Setup Manifest: XML File provided together with the setup that describes Supported devices Contained DTMs Command line parameters Configure the setup behavior Define installation path Execute with / without user interface Install only DTM device model / user interface

6 DTM DEPLOYMENT & INSTALLATION (1 / 2) Engineering tool uses the DTM setup program to install or update DTM Example workflow 1. User initiates search for specific device in the engineering tool 2. Engineering tool browses manifest files in product catalog (online via engineering tool specific internet or on local CD) 3. Engineering tool presents the available device to the user. User selects the devices to install or update 4. Engineering tool download / copies DTM setup program(s) to target PC 5. Engineering tool executes DTM setup program(s) in the background

12 distore USER REGISTRATION / REPOSITORIES Users can create (free of charge) distore accounts and DTM repositories.

13 distore UPLOAD OF DTM The (currently) simplest way to upload a DTM to the distore is the M&M fdtcontainer User can select DTM in the project or device catalog, select corresponding setup and uploads it to the store Upload generates (FDT 2) setup manifest information is shown in the distore

14 distore REPOSITORY SHARING DTMs in a repository can be shared with other distore users Users get an invitation for shared repositories DTMs in repositories appear in distore and client applications device catalog

15 distore VENDOR REPOSITORIES Public device vendor repositories are available for all distore users Vendor repositories are brand-labelled, may contain vendor specific functions (license agreements / number checks ) Vendors pay fee for hosting the DTMs in distore

19 fdtcontainer DTM DOWNLOAD & INSTALLATION Download of DTM setup starts, if user clicks the distore icon in the device catalogue Installation dialog appears and let user confirm the installation. If a FDT1.2.x DTM is installed, then the setup program dialogs appear. For FDT2 DTMs the setup is executed without UI in the background. At the end the device catalogue is updated.

20 fdtcontainer DTM AVAILABILITY CHECK The availability of DTMs is checked, when a project is opened in fdtcontainer. DTMs not installed, but available in distore are marked with special icons. User can search for DTM in distore and install it from here.
