3 Introduction This is a description of the emergency plan for the Marine Biological Research Centre which is part of the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Science, University of Southern Denmark, Odense. The emergency plan will be a guidance tool for limiting damage or injury if an accident occurs. The emergency plan can save valuables, and ultimately lives, in situations where the Department rules otherwise are being followed. At the Marine Biological Research Centre we recommend that incidents that could have public and media interest are handled by the Head of Department only. The success of an emergency plan depends on the knowledge of its contents. Please read it and help make a difference. 3
4 Emergency Plan Call the emergency dispatch centre dial 112 State Whether you need police, ambulance or fire department Who you are That you are calling from Marine Biological Research Centre, Hindsholmvej 11, 5300 Kerteminde Ambulance entrance: See map on the last page The phone number you are calling from What has happened How many are injured Inform Head of Department Marianne Holmer, phone number Or Department Administrator Merete Jørgensen, phone number Inform colleagues to 4 Take care of the injured Meet ambulance at the entrance Get the safety datasheets if there has been a chemical accident Call the Technical Service, Building Department on Inform a Safety Representative (see phone list on page 15)

6 Evacuation Plan Evacuation at the Marine Biological Research Centre is carried out according to the vest model, where people who feel able to take control of the situation automatically do so. At the Marine Biological Research Centre there is one vest stand located at the main stairs at the ground level. Evacuation Activate in-house warning Go to vest stand that contains Yellow vest Orange vest Area map Map describing the vest stand s coverage area Whistle Colour to mark the doors 6
7 The first to arrive put on vests If the vests are gone; leave the building and go to Assembly Point 1 at the main entrance gate near Hindsholmvej Yellow vest Leading the evacuation Take the map describing the coverage area and start evacuating Use the whistle to get people s attention Mark doors of evacuated rooms with a large cross Leave the building and go to Assembly Point 1 Report to orange vest Orange vest Leading the gathering point Take the map of the Department and go to Assembly Point 1 Point out an alternative gathering point if Assembly Point 1 is not accessible Arrange people into groups Account for missing people within each group Ensure the reception of the rescue teams Inform about missing people and the report from yellow vest to the on-site commander 7
8 Injury Stop the accident Stop machines or work Turn off the electricity Examine the injured - is the person breathing? Not breathing or unconscious Follow the Emergency Plan on page 4 and begin lifesaving first aid Ensure an open and clear airway Send someone to get the defibrillator located at the main entrance of Fjord & Belt Give heart massage and administer artificial respiration 30:2 until defibrillator arrives If medical attention is needed Call for a Seated patient transport from Dansk Autohjælp on phone no State subscription no Call a taxi on phone no Make sure the injured is accompanied in the patient transport or taxi 8
9 Breathing If an ambulance is needed follow the Emergency Plan on page 4 and begin first aid. Stop the bleeding, first aid kits are located on ground level in the Big Laboratory and on the 1st. floor in the kitchen. Cool burn wounds with water. Wrap the injured in blankets located on ground level next to the first aid kit. Stay with the person. All injuries, regardless their extent, must be reported to a Safety Representative.
10 Fire and Fire Fighting Evacuate the room Assess the character of the fire Large fire Follow the Emergency Plan on page 4 Follow the Evacuation Plan on page 6 Close doors and windows Small fire If possible, stop the fire with the right fire fighting equipment Inform a Safety Representative (see page 15) Firefighting equipment available 10 Fire hose Wood, paper, textiles, people Fire blanket People, solid materials Fire extinguisher Fluids, gases, solid materials, electrical equipment Emergency shower People
11 Chemical Accident Stop the accident Evacuate the room Assess the extent of the accident using Kemibrug s safety datasheets. If you are not able to handle the chemical spill yourself Contact The Building Department at in order to stop ventilation, put up signs, notify environmental authorities and secure and clean the area Next-door laboratories and Fjord & Belt A Safety Representative If you are able to handle the chemical spill yourself Ventilate if possible Put on necessary protective equipment Gloves, breathing mask and safety glasses can be found in the Big Laboratory Collect the spill with a spill kit or granules that can be found in the Big Laboratory Dispose of the collected spill as chemical waste 11

13 Field Work Accidents at sea or car accident with injury Call 112 If possible, contact the secretariat at Find the injured on the secretariat s passenger list State the phone number you are calling from Minor injuries you can handle yourself Car accident only involving material damage Call Dansk Autohjælp at State subscription no Fill in a claim form, that you will find in the car log book and hand it to the secretariat Report to a Safety Representative who will deal with the incident as a near-accident Material damage must be reported to Finn Andreasen at or Niels Møller at Accidents at sea i.e. motor stop or man over board with no injuries Material damage must be reported to Finn Andreasen at or Niels Møller at Report to a Safety Representative who will deal with the incident as a near-accident 13
