It covers a range of different types of businesses, from consumer based retail sites, through auction or music sites, to business exchanges trading goods and services between corporations. It is currently one of the most important aspects of the Internet to emerge. These lessons will learn you how to plan and coordinate the creation process when building a Web site (or when having it built): Planning for a Good Site Design, Legal formalities, Designing for e- commerce, from Methods to Attract an Audience up to Online Payment Methods Current Internet Trends Writing for the Web Planning for a Good Site Design Internet Technology : Basics of HTML & CSS Working with WYSIWYG Web hosting and domain registration Legal formalities concerning e-commerce Attracting an Audience: Publicizing your Site Working Keywords into Your Pages Submitting to the Search Sites Designing for e-commerce Target Audiences Internet Marketing Online Payment Methods The student coordinates the creation process of a website (group work with x people) The student writes a paper in which the composition of the website, it's goals, target audience, competition and structure are explained. The student knows how to write for the Internet. The students knows how to optimize a site for search engines. The student understands the basics of Internet Marketing, technology basics behind the Internet, the current evolutions of the Internet. The students works in groups and carries out assignments (writing a paper and bringing forward a presentation). The student uses Internet tools to share information about a project.

6 COURSE: International Business (previously: international contracts OR international trade institutions and contracts) Level: 2/3 Prerequisites: Business English Credits: 3 Retake possible: Yes Lecturer: Bart Leyman The purpose of this course is to give a comprehensive overview of the main concepts related to international business processes (i.e. incoterms, documentary credit, customs formalities, etc.). More specifically, this course should allow students to understand the daily practice of an international business (including the use/interpretation of the various international trade documents), which will eventually support the management trainee/professional bachelor in fulfilling her/his tasks in an international business environment. 1. The student can explain the major (business) risks of an export-import process (e.g. legal risks, currency risks, etc.). 2. The student can explain the information content of the main documents used in international business (e.g. the letter of credit). 3. The student can explain the main concepts of an international business process (e.g. the role of business chambers). 4. The student can explain the use of the different incoterms. 5. The student can explain the differences between the various incoterms. 6. The student can explain the clauses/stipulations of standard contracts used in international trade (e.g. an international sales agreement). 7. The student can explain the various international payment techniques (e.g. documentary credit, open account, etc.) 8. The student can explain short-term trade finance techniques (e.g. factoring) 9. The student can explain the basic techniques to manage currency risks in international business transactions (e.g. currency options and forwards). 10. The student can explain the main elements of international agency contracts and of distributorship contracts. 11. The student can explain the different customs formalities (e.g. single administrative document). 12. The student can explain the main VAT principles of international trade (e.g. intra-community supply of services/goods). 13. The student can explain the main concepts of intellectual property rights. 14. The student uses the theoretical insights to solve business-oriented cases and exercises.

8 COURSE: European institutions and law Level: Introductory Prerequisites: / Credits: 3 Resit Possible: yes Lecturer: Bart Roels This course gives an overview of the history, actors, sources of law and policy fields of the European Union. To possess insight in the constitutional law of the European Union To master strategies to find information about the European Union To possess the ability to situate European political themes in their context To have good knowledge of history, actors and sources of European law To have elementary knowledge of the policy fields of European politics Lectures and guestlectures with discussions Assignments: solve multiple choice questions, presentation of a judgment of the Court of Justice, discovery of EU-website ( Coaching: the lecturer gives feedback during the course and through Blackboard. Study visit: European Institution in Brussels, Europe Direct Information relay in Antwerp,,... Written exam (two hours): multiple choice questions (10 points) and open questions (10 points). The consolidated version of the European treaties can be used if there is nothing written in it, although underlining and marking is allowed. Second exam period: The student should write an original individual paper about a subject that has been treated during the course.
9 COURSE: European social security Level: Introductory Prerequisites: / Credits: 4 Resit Possible: yes Lecturer: Bart Roels In the European Union social security belongs to the competence of the Member States. This means that there are now 28 different social security systems. The task of the European Union is mainly to coordinate these systems in the light of the free movement of persons (hard law). Moreover the EU tries to reach common objectives for social protection and social inclusion with the open method of coordination (OMC) (soft law). This course stimulates the inquisitivity and the independence of the students via the research they do into the systems of the EU member states, partly together with foreign students. The persistence and problem solving attitude of the students is stimulated in their search for relevant information and the sharing thereof with their fellow students by the internet (Blackboard). The student is able to understand the various social security systems of the EU through an extensive search of the legal sources. The student has developed a critical knowledge of the different social security systems and the social law in the EU. The student is aware of the fact that there does not (not yet) exist any kind of harmonization of the social law between the member states. Lectures and/or guest lectures with debates. The discussion with and among students is stimulated. Practicum: independent research on a specific topic which results in a presentation with other student(s). Coaching and feedback by the lecturer. Paper (10 points) and Presentation (10 points). The students are assessed on the content and processing of the research materials, their presentation skills and the answering of questions after the presentation. Second exam period: The student has do the research more deeply again and to deliver an improved text. He will only get points for the paper (20 points).
10 COURSE: HRM Level: Introductory Prerequisites: / Credits: 4 Resit Possible: yes Lecturer: Bart Roels Should we do away with HRM? There is good reason for HRM's beleaguered situation. It is often ineffective, incompetent and costly. But the truth is that HRM has never been more necessary! The competitive forces that managers and organisations face today and will face in the future demand organisational and human excellence. The student is aware of the importance of a solid HRM policy to improve the performance of staff members as well as the functioning of an organization. The student knows about the role in HRM of different members of an organization: staff member, line manager and HR-manager. The student has an insight in the main areas of human resource management and their interrelationship. The student can develop a critical view concerning theories and models of HRM. Lectures and/or guest lectures with debates. The discussion with and among students is stimulated. Practicum: independent research on a specific topic which results in a presentation with other student(s). Coaching and feedback by the lecturer. As a starting point we take the mission of every company to create durable value to his stakeholders in a challenging environment (with focus on consumers & customers). Furthermore we contribute to following marketing themes: Company & marketing strategy Analysing the marketing environment and using data: with a contribution of GFK. Business buyer behaviour in a BtoB environment Innovation & product development Pricing strategy Integrated marketing communication strategy Link between marketing & sales To understand what marketing means in today s economy To be able to make a basic marketing plan To know the state of the art marketing tools available for analyzing data To understand the link between marketing & sales We invite students to participate in an active way through business cases. They are presenting their group work during the course. The students are stimulated to use cases from their country of origin. The idea is to stimulate international exchange of knowledge & best practices. 5 out of the 20 points are given based upon the group work 15 out of the 20 points are awarded based upon a written exam
